aww man how cool wold that be to see linda vaughn back in the hay day of dragracing and those old funnys cars damn man i wish i grew up in the seventys
@moluvsage Thankfully, these drag cars are still around today! They are still being raced, though perhaps not in NHRA competition. There are many which, amazingly are now street legal, too! The only problem is that they have lost their popularity at the drag-strip to smaller funny cars and gassers powered by Mazda Wankel rotary engines. This kind of drag racing still exists, except that rotary engines are now the staple for competition today.
@sizzlehalt Not just awesome, but it still exists today! Only that smaller cars with Wankel rotary engines are now the trend to follow for this kind of racing.
York U.S. 30 was cool!!! Sometimes they had to stop the racing, just to let a small plane land..It actually was an airport and the strip was the runway!! Sometimes, due to parachute or other failure, the cars would go past the end of the "strip" and go across U.S. 30 and into a cornfield!!! Oh..those were the days!!!
@valleycruiser This kind of racing still remains active in Puerto Rico, though Wankel rotary engines in smaller cars rebuilt into dragsters are now the reigning trend.
What an awesome era. No electronics, no stupid throttle stops, no stupid ET limits, just raw, balls-to-the-wall drag racing. I'm a Mopar guy, so of course I love the Hemis, but hearing Dyno Don powershifting his SOHC 427 Maverick is awesome. At least the cars still looked like cars, too. PS still had door handles, and funnies looked a lot like their street brethren. Today they look like used bars of soap and doorstops.
BTW, the Hurst/Olds Linda Vaughn is riding on is a 69, not a 72.
man that was sweet..i love the old pro stockers, and am i glad you had sound, that must have cost about 10 more dollars for that movie camera back then...thank you
great video ! that was drag racing in EASY GOING FUN TIME ; STARTED DRAG RACING IN 1970 MYSELF. HAD A 63 GALAXIE 4 DOOR 289 , 2 BARREL ,3.50 GEAR ; RAN 16.7 . NOT BAD FOR A TANK WITH A SMALL ENGINE !
i'm a 17 year old going on 18 next week but i feel like i should have lived through this era. where people where like Gas mileage who gives a crap. Just give me a fat ass V8 that can burn the tires out in less than a min... damn wish i grew up back then...
thx for sharing .. my dad ran "Twiggy" FED back in the 60s after working for Chris Karamasines for years .. mostly ran Mid-West open trialer .. Made it out West nearing the end
.. But it doesnt end,he had family, and now were grown,so we run Twiggy II FED on the Nostalgia Circuit, .. Mostly Mid-West .. ALL cast 392 Hemi :) :) :) Cast in the 5's .. :)
- Thanks so much for sharing this great footage, with AUDIO! We STILL Open-Trailer! :) :)
that was when you rowed a four speed crash box in pro stock. Lencos weren't around. Nice post. If I remember right, Nicholson went to a four door maverick for wheelbase "interpreting" rule book.
Back then you read the rule book and built a car according to how "creative" you interpreted rules. You were legal till you were caught. Modified and Pro classes were great, but super stock, stock, and pure stock racers were all artists and outlaws at their craft, pushing the rules for that extra tenth or hundredth over their competition. Racers from that era through hard work and determination laid the foundation for what is today's racing.
Hey I talked to Linda Vaughn this summer at Beaversprings raceway she was there for the york us 30 reunion. She still looks plenty good and goin stong. She was sad about Hurst beimg sold to some chinese outfit. Thats a shame.

It's kinda sad that modern drag racing has become hi tech with cookie cutter race cars. They are ungodly fast but BUT they just don't have any soul.

What is the name of the song they used for the music bed for the ad that ran on WSBA? I think it's by Sam Butera but I can't find it. Thanks.
