It's a wonderful reader. The only down points being that it takes awhile to load up. So, just turn it on, and go eat for 10 minutes, and come back to your books. And, that its' battery goes down completely in a week or so, even if you do not use it. That's b/c this reader goes into a type of standby instead of going off. It's a wonderful feature that makes it load quicker. I'd hate to see how long it'd take to load if it did not do that.
The contrast of the screen in a real life situation is much lower, and actually is more grey than white. Don't be fooled by this super lit, post processed video.
Thank you so much for making this video! This is exactly what I've been searching for for weeks - a simple, real life video that shows the reader in use, not a bunch of mumbo-jumbo technology-geek stuff. Thank you!
iPad- would need recharging every day, it weights 3 times as much as Sony PRS 600. It is ok for reading, but it is much less portable or convenient to carry with you as ebook reader is.
I hate how ebook readers look like newspaper. I hate how the colors suck. I hate how they flash when you click something. I hate how they can't have illustrations in color.
I hate ebook readers. iPad for ebook reading all the way.
@TheOn3LeftBehind Critical much? I like the iPad too and the many features of it but I keep considering an eReader just to read books on and plan on getting an eReader and an iPad as I am not too sure about long endured reading on the iPad (for coloured digital magazines yes its perfect) but maybe not so much when I want to read a novel. But most of all the eReader has to be the cheaper one of the two if I am going to get both
@youaccoount it supposed to be fully charged from wall outlet in 4 hours and overnight from computer, though if computer is put in sleep mode, that would prevent it from charging your reader.
You can put any file that your reader supports- epub, word, pdf etc. on your reader using your computer usb cord.
It comes with several built in dictionaries, but as far as I know nobody succeeded in adding their own.
Many people with the need to use other languages are craving this feature. You can use pdf files and epub documents with built in fonts to read in Spanish.
So I can put into this thing my pdf library that I downloaded for free? Doesnt i t have DRM or something? Also, is the dictionary pretty basic or can I find concepts like falsifiability or categorical imperative
You can put your non DRM adobe pdf files on it, you can also use Adobe Digital account with it, just make sure to use same in the Sony Reader Library and Adobe Digital Editions.
Dictionary seems adequate, could fine falsify, not falsifiablity :)
I have a few questions. What is the maximum .pdf file size that this reader can take? I read in Wikipedia that bigger .pdf files tend to not fit on this reader's screen, so you have to awkwardly zoom in and out.
Is the Sony Reader available outside the United States along with the Sony store? Can you simply transfer your own .pdf (and other formats) files in the Sony Reader?
@interxavierxxx Size of the file is not very important, size of the page matters if you use picture pdf document, then it gets re-sized to match screen size of your reader. Viewing it in landscape mode makes it better. But if it is a larger picture, you still need zoom.
You can load your own pdf and other compatibly formatted files on your Sony Reader.
Purchasing from the Reader (eBook) Store is available to residents of the United States and Canada.
after highlighting a passage you can either write or type your notes, those are kept separately and you can access them by going to notes in the menu, clicking on any brings up the page with notes.
this was a great video demonstration. as one viewer noted, this is far better than sony's own demonstrations mainly because it features something that potential buyers of this device employ, i.e., reading. great, great job. I like the cover. it's too bad that these now ship with just the neoprene sleeve instead. perhaps sony noticed amazon shipping their kindles without any protective covers at all and decided to skimp. not sure, but the old covers were nice. can we purchase them for this?
thanks. i'm not sure whether to get this version or the new daily edition that's due to come out in December. The wireless functionality is kind of enticing.
no doubt the Nook is nice, it's cool looking and the price is nice for a touch screen...but do you really care about a gimmicky little color screen at the bottom for not much more that browsing covers? i'd rather have more reading space, plus Sony is a trusted name with electronics for many years...so they ain't no slouch. But hey, it depends on your needs/taste...i'm just saying, don't move too fast on a decision.
This Sony Reader Touch Edition looks really cool. A perfect Christmas gift item for sure. I think this video clip is better than Sony's advertisement.

This doesn't look to cool to me. I'd rather get the Kobo eReader. It's a lot cheaper too.

I'd greatly appreciate any info you might provide about annotating pdf files (scientific papers) on this gizmo!
I am torn between PRS 600 and the Nook, but the Nook doesn't support annotations as it seems according to news currently available.
Opstipation 2 years ago
yes, you can annotate pdf files, 3 ways-
draw or write with your stylus,
highlight a passage
after highlighting a passage you can either write or type your notes, those are kept separately and you can access them by going to notes in the menu, clicking on any brings up the page with notes.

The cover in the video is actually from Sony PRS-505,
it does fit, a bit too snugly.
From the very beginning PRS-600 was shipped with a pouch rather than a cover.
But Sony has now different color covers in it's sonystyle store.
