@minasgekos Svetlanov, Luzanov and Kogan are Russian - All three are extraordinary in this, but Svetlanov drives the performance, a magical artist totally attuned to the music. Listen to all the other versions by others on YT and you will see they pale in comparison.
@yougoddamnprick Well, maybe i was when i wrote this, a year ago. Just don't look too closely now,(altho i've still got lots of hair, and the rest, to stand on end!).
Great piece of music! And even if you don't like the music itself (like I did until a couple of weeks ago :P) it's worth listening it just because of the great performance!
I especially like the beginning, and the part starting at 5:04.
A really great performance of this work and I'm thankful to have it in my collection along with just about every recording that Svetlanov made. Svetlanov was a really great artist who never got the recognition he deserved.
Aha! At last the only interpretation of this problematic work that made my hair stand on end! Svetlanov seems to dominate with his truly "epic" orchestral thinking, drawing his partners thru the impenetrable forests inexorably to shattering climaxes which amaze the players themselves. What incredible musicianship!
This is the one.

This must be pure heroin, the first puff got me hooked for ever.
Seriously, this interpretation is outstanding.
Many thanks to you, Nikolaï Medtner (the second!) for posting this "video" - the paintings are gorgeous too

How can you not love these recordings by Russian/Soviet all-stars like the present one...
minasgekos 5 months ago
@minasgekos Nothing Soviet about this - this is extraordinary music. And Rachmaninoff hated everything "soviet".
Best performance ever of the D minor trio, immense musicality and passion as a trio by three true masters, BRAVI! :-)

The interpretation of the Shostakovitch trio is much better that this one.

Absolutely marvelous!
And it's good to be reminded about what a wonderful pianist Svetlanov was, in addition to being such a great conductor.
