  • I'm not sure about the Hilal school: she's not dressed the 'Hilal Dance' way and she uses to many isolations in her dance.

I'd say she has Raqs Sharqui Society style: this is a British association approching this beautiful dance searching grounded and integrated body.

Many different styles but the same passion :-)

  • She comes obviously from the Suraya Hilal school. They "sell" their own egyptian dance, they call "Raqs Sharqi" (which means Dance from East). Surayya Hilal has developed her own dance style, which she acclaims to be the "real" or "authentic" dance. All her students have her style. The expression of joy is wanted to be limited, and the Suraya Hilal school also spreads the attitude, that the costume should be different from the ones, that cabaret dancers wear.

  • @latanyasdance Hello, I have had the chance to study with Suraya but I have never heard anyone in that circle claim "authentic" or "real" dance. What it is claimed is that the style is rooted in Egyptian rural folk dances (es distunguidhed from folkloristic) Suraya Hilal has now developed her own dance style which is copyrighted under her name and she likes to list it among contemporary dances rather than "sell" it as you say as a different style of Raqs Sharqi.

  • @nensimilia

What I have said is just my experience. What I see is against my own understanding and the students that come to my classes after years of studying Suraya Hilal Style are overwhelmed by the freedom of movement and emotions they may experience by learning the bellydance I teach (I have studied with egyptian teachers in Egypt, was a student of Mahmoud Reda, Raqia Hassan, Aida Nour, Mona El Said etc etc.).

  • @latanyasdance All the people you mention I respect and appreciate their work, however they are all influenced by either classical ballet or cabaret or both, (this is not an offense, it is only a constatation, they will tell you this as well) While RSS and Hilal Dance are more influenced by contemporary dance and some other disciplines. Everyone does what suites them best. It's not a style war or a style competition. I am also reading you talk about "sect" gosh :). Peace

  • @nensimilia

NONE of my teachers EVER tried to convince me that HIS dance is the REAL dance, and other forms therefore are to be rejected! My teachers were the most humble and dedicated people, real artists and they showed me their soul. Suraya Hilal's reputation is the reputation of a guru and diva and she has to take responsibility for that- NOT ME.

  • @latanyasdance I practice RSS and the RSS it is indeed a different style of Raqs Sharqi developed by Suraya Hilal up until end of the 90's circa and it is again rooted in Egyptian folk dance with a contemporary dance influence (rather than a classical or cabaret influence which we find in the other styles included the ones developed in Egypt). Dance is alive and stays as such only by its ability to transform and adapt to time, people and places.

  • first, peace on you.

the surprise that i'm Egyptian, & i leaned the oriental dance since i had 3 years. so i know what exactly means an oriental or egyptian dance. So the techniques is not the only IMP thing bcz every1 can learn the technique even men. but that give the oriental dance its magic is the feeling of the music. let's the music guide you & make you move or too express ur feeling

  • @mimi24888 i agree w u completely

  • super*****

  • bithangaz nothing to do with the lovely baladi dancing just zero and zero

  • wow she looks so awkward and rigid!!! all the compliments r from non egyptians who obv are western and dont know what 2 look 4....good try

  • @MARAFSH agree. she is a mite stiff...

  • @MARAFSH

    Enta arif, Marafsh ;-)

  • OK! This is the real style of Baladi. You show us the spirit of this sort of dance.Baladi is and over side of belly dance.

  • @altheas26

The "real" Baladi you claim this to be is a personal style of Suraya Hilal and what she does is is just creating a monopol for her own invention. She makes people believe that she has the secret of the "real" deal. She makes herself a guru, which comes close to a sect.

  • mucha tecnica poco corazón , aprender mas

  • Wallah! Soraya Hilal style! Beautiful! Continue to pass on this beautiful, graceful style of Egyptian dance.

  • Love it :)

  • I'd love to know which cd this song encounter

  • Verry wonderful i lke much!!!

  • this is not an egyptian dance but just the music

she do anythung else than dancing

  • @mimi24888 I definetly disagree.... i have been studying traditional egyptian baladi style as well as "cabaret" bellydance and I must say that if you think "she's doing anything else than dancing" then you have no idea about what baladi is. The less you do, the more you are. If you have poor techinque and no expression you have to move a lot to impress the audience, but once you have technique, elegance, expression you can emotion your audience with the simplest move.

  • @marinaaurora i disagree with you there. she only has the idea of baladi style. ignore her face and pay attention to her body. it is almost as if it is to heavy for her, she is very stiff. i noticed this is the biggest issue with a lot of dancers. i mean look at suheir zaki, her body is as light as air. it's what makes belly dance, belly dance. feel me? this girls problem is her movements aren't coming through as she intends them to and because of that it shows no connection to the music.

  • @marinaaurora first, peace on you.

the surprise that i'm Egyptian, & i leaned the oriental dance since i had 3 years. so i know what exactly means an oriental or egyptian or baladi dance / even cabaret style. So the technique is not the only IMP thing bcz every1 can learn the technique even men. but that give the oriental dance its magic is the feeling of the music. let's the music guide you & make you move or too express ur feeling

  • i saw this video a long time ago and even as i search youtube for more videos i always come back to this one and watch it because it is so beautiful. i wish i could be as good as she is one day

  • wowwww

  • That looks like Soraya Hilal School ?!

Did you have lessons with her?

    Pretty good!

Gotta work on those helicopter hands though !

  • That looks like Soraya Hilal School ?!

Did you have lessons with her?

  • Loved watching you. Bravo!

  • de habla de wala eh hhhhhhhhhh

  • about the dress .. there are types of bellydancing styles ... the armor bra is like more of a "city" or civilized styl, more like modern... this one is more "Bedouin-sh" style they dance barefoot with ankle bracelet and all that, i like both styles if u ask me :p but this one is harder to achieve with attitude but she did a good job.

  • @vampySARAH also in egypt at least it is actually illegal to bellydance in public with your midriff exposed... i know this isn't in egypt, but just a thought, idk.

  • i prefer these types of outfit than the more nude type, i like to leave things to the imagination, and remain mysterious to my audience, it add something to the art.

  • song's name?

  • yep, love the dress!

  • Too much arms, not enough hips.

  • @ayah1984 The hipwork is ok, she is just slim;) I think she walks around too much it´´s too energetic and ballet -/showlike for the Egyptian style. What do you think?

  • Not Egyptian style. But she's good.

  • great!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the dress is nice, but this woman sucks. she can't feel the music

  • @nillyz100 u are right

  • For baladi I think you move more with the wind instruments (flute, accordian) more so than the drum, because it's western to move with the beat of the drums - especially if baladi.

  • not egyptian for sure!! she SUCKS big time!!! that was annoying to even watch!!

  • Definately not Egyptian - I thought Hilal trained, is the head veil a clue............. But very definately a Western interpretation from someone who is thnking of themselves as a dancer rather than interpreting the music

  • What is she doing with her arms?! She s*ucks!

  • @NObrainNOheadacheXXX in the baladi style the arms not are important, is improvisated. Is a very diferent style of belly dance.

  • I must say .. if in Egypt the most popular and loved dancer is Dina, I rest my case on Egyptian's taste on dancing in general ..

  • I completely agree... it's tasteless, looks rather cheap and not well danced at all.

  • She dances quite well I think, but there is no expression, she does not feel the music and that makes her dance not very exciting and (for egyptian people I think) clown-looking.

  • she must find herself another job .. it sucks !!

  • it reminds me of hilal style dancing (from suraya hilal).

  • ok....the first few seconds i saw this i was like...WTF..is she a clown...im arabic en if any one danced like this wed make fun of her

  • true that, wtf is she doing.

  • Comment removed

  • Couldn't agree with you more I am an Egyptian , she would be kicked if she did that here ...! and her body is not Baladi at all especially her scrawny legs ...

  • well i wouldnt criticize her body...if she danced well...cos after all some people cant gain weight no matter what-so envious of them;)-..but she is actually dancing like a clown...

  • Is a wonderful dancind and a wonderful clote!!!

  • Enchanting, grounded and elegant. Loved it. Thanks.

  • Bellisimo!!!!

  • Fantastic!

    RSS style is the best!

  • @nensimilia I do agree with you: this is RSS style. I love it!

  • Wonderful!!!!!!

  • Where could I purchase this style dress .. I just love the material too ... the satin feels to heavy and this looks lovely and light!

  • nice dancing, cute dress :)

  • Fascinating!! True, no compromise middle eastern movement but western soul... Very musical and lovely.

  • i totally agree i love the dress...magnificent x..

  • Oh oh oh....I LOVE the dress! Why must all dancers wear the body armor bra? I wish more dancers would wear this style of caftan. Even totally sheer with beads, the style leaves a little to the imagination, and preserves a little femenine mystique. I agree with all of you about egyptian style dance. LOVE it!

  • surely baladi must tell a story. especially if the music has words. just like in any other country there are word in songs so u must express the emotion of the words.

  • Eva, this is one of the best baladi performances I have seen up to know! I trained for many years with students of Suraya Hilal and I am a teacher myself. Good luck for you! Renate Farida

  • I live in the middle east for 20 years....this is the best i have ever seen!!!!!. Mabrook!!

  • simply perfect....amazing...i can´t find words....i must cry:):)

  • oh my god i love this!

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!

  • Doesn't baladi have to tell a story? Tell me if I were wrong... Doesn't matter that she Egyptian or not, she does wonderful! I almost understood the story... The dress is nice, the music is nice, so I cannot understand why isn't she smiling at all. :D

  • No, baladi does not tell a story, it's just one of the artistic directions in oriental dance, developped in Egypt in the early 20th century, when many people from the countryside came to the cities and brought their traditions, music and dance with them, which then merged with modern instruments and european influences into the Baladi-style.

  • vERY NICE BALADI ! Dance your own baladi with sadness and happyness, dance baladi like the life !

  • very very perfect!!

this is the baladi most wonderfull that ever see!!!!!

    nice!!!

    your style is unic!!!

  • this is a really "baladi woman""

    nice

    kisses

  • In my opion baladi should be about having fun and not the technics. Otherwise its dead. She does not look like she is having fun

  • I learned that baladi means that the dancer has more freedom to express her own creativity in her dance, not that it means having fun ;-)

  • baladi means country. how people dance for themself when they celebrate. When they're having FUN. Its not a sport its a way of expressing yourself. Now its turned in to a sport and the dance becomes cold and dead. I really don't care for sitting down and watch people do tricks with their belly.

  • my sentiments precisely, are you Egyptian?

  • I thought i answered you. No, am not Egyptian am Morocain.

  • Agree, especially ATS, it's totally not my cup of tea! I just love Egyptian style raq sharqi.

  • What is ATS?

  • American Tribal Style

  • I don't like anything with choreography. U just do your thing!!!

  • That's why I don't like ATS, they just dance in an imaginary "box" & very competitive to other dancers.

  • i cant believe i actualy found someone on youtube who doesent like ATS...its like everybody are so in love with it, but when i see it i want to take my gun out and shoot...

so all the best to you =)

  • Hilal Dance - eindeutig. Sureya Hilal, London hat diesen Stil kreiert. Die Tänzerin ist phantastisch und im Fluß mit der Musik. Bravo - eine Superinterpretation. Auch das Kostüm gefällt mir sehr.

  • This costume is giving a cultural indication of being folkloric yet the movements are largely cabaret. This dance could be interpreted as offensive. Too bad as she is otherwise a talented dancer

  • What in your opion does she do wrong that could be interpreted as offensive to some people?

  • Nice dance and wonderful costume.

  • verryyyy niiiiceee wooow

  • Maravilosa

  • I'm Egyptian and this is NOT the Egyptian style.

  • i agree

  • Nanawabas and Shoequeen20, why do you say it's not egyptian style?... I would like to know so I don't get confused. Thank you

  • Hilal Dance is a combination of traditional egyptian dance and european modern dance, it was developped by the famous Egyptian dancer and choreographer Suraya Hilal.

  • I have had the pleasure of doing a couple of workshops with her in London, I love this and I love beledi, I don't like doing tricks with my belly either, but if you don't other modern dancers think you can't dance, I personally don't care. I love the dance and I will keep on dancing it. I would like the name of this piece please if you know it.

  • stop being haters! she dances really good!!

  • The big hip circles are great, but there's something in her dancing that isn't Egyptian at all. She tends to move too much, and there's lack of control that undermines the supposed sexiness and sexuality of baladi.

  • MSG ME ON MSN MESSENGR !!! ID IS jane24belle. im bored and need someone 2 talk 2 D

  • How beautiful is this woman! A wonderful interpretation of Baladi style dance. I absolutely love this.

  • But it's not Egyptian Style.

  • u can tell these are not orginally arab bellydancers.... they dance a bit differnt

  • So what?

  • So what? she was just stating here a different yet very honest opinion. I am Arab too and I agree with Nuha.

  • Why so what? The dancer herself claims that this was Egyptian style. which it definitely isn't, also the feeling from her dance is anything but Egyptian. The music is, though.

  • yeah, a lot of my egyptian friends said it's not egyptian at all. And it isn't, it's baladi inspired by Suraya Hilal style, although she's egyptian too. But she developed her own style and its sooo hard. Totally different from what dancers in egypt dance i agree.

  • its obvious they got every single step emeorized just like a machine,,its like they r programed for it

  • Well at least she has her clothes one.

  • Totally agree with you.

  • Creo que es el estilo de Soraya Hilal.

  • does anyone know the name of the song?

    Please~please~~~

  • você é maravilhosa...

    parabéns ,bela coreografia,bela musica,expressão maravilhosa..

    beijos

  • Excelente. Bella interpretación, coreografía y vestuario.

  • I Like it!!! Whats the name of your song?

  • beautiful! VERY egyptian.

  • brilliant!!! grounded, fluid, percussive..loved your interpretation!!!

  • I love your dance!!!!

  • Looks very inspired by Suriya Helal, am I right? I do like it.

  • excellent!

  • wonderful

    beautiful costume

  • Very very graceful, precise and feminine.

  • very graceful, how long have you been dancing?
