it was not only a storm with huricane magnitude in the UK,it also effected other european countries, like the netherlands, germany etc. in Holland more then 20 people died because of this storm (which is much for a small country like the netherlands). i still remember this storm vividly,i was 26 years old and remeber the destruction it also brought in where i live( southern netherlands).
I was born on the night of that storm. My mum said she was sat in her hospital bed and watched a big tree fall on several cars... Very calming for a pregnant woman I suppose? O.o
I remember the 1990 storm, I was at primary school but remember been called inside from break time and called into the gym we wernt sent home but we didnt do anything as it was so noisy we just played games and drew pictures till home time.
I remember Christmas Eve 1997 when there was a massive storm lashing through Yorkshire and where I live did get battered badly. I remember going through Harrogate on Boxing Day and there was trees blown over and the wind was that powerful that it picked up one of the shelters on West Park.
I can vaguely remember this storm I was only about 3 but I rememeber looking out of our dinning room window and see the glass rumble thinking the windows where gonna come in. And also see our garden trees swaying around and the rain was completely horizontal.
At around 12 noon the wind started to pick up. I was sitting in the school library and we started to look at each other remember 1987. By lunch at 1pm the wind was gusty. Along with 5 other class mates we walked to up to Ally Pally. By 1.30pm the wind was whipping up horribly, We took shelter. Nasty
I was working in London. Tried to get home via Waterloo Station but no trains running because the glass roof had collapsed. Spent most of the evening in the Hole in the Wall! Finally got to Staines at 2.45 am where train terminated & 6 of us begged the train driver to take us on to Egham. Surprisingly he obliged! Other colleagues of mine were actually asked to help remove trees from the train tracks on their journeys home. A complete night of chaos.
yugilord essex was 1 of the worst affected areas, look where the isor bars are the most tightly packed thats where the strongest winds where, and they where ova the southern half of Britain including essex, 85mph was recorded in Chelmsford
I remember this. I think I was about 4 or 5 I remember walking up my street with my dad in a blizzard and all the bins infront of the houses had fallen over and all the trees were blowing everywhere.
This storm was alot more widespread than the 87 storm. And the highest windspeeds recorded where stronger aswell, I believe somewhere in the Bristol Channel recorded 140mph!
Fair enough I was nearly 2 at this time but I do not remember anything about this storm. It's not been spoken about by anyone i know! Mind you we're from Essex so we probably missed it - seeing as this would come under an 'exciting event'
I was tree felling on Dartmoor during this. The trees were coming down by themselves, and I nearly got hit by one. Then we had to chainsaw our way out of blockages to get back home because fallen trees had blocked the road. It was terrifying.
I remember this storm coming home from school on the bus and it has to go under a railway bridge that is near a river and the bridge always floods when the river is up when the bus went under it messed the brakes up so the bus had real trouble stopping
then walking up hill from the bus stop home or should I say trying to
I was at school in a science lesson when this happened. The lesson was cancelled around midday, the teacher closed all the windows and drew the blinds and we were asked to sit in teh middle of the room until lunch time. Outside people couldn't even stand up and we were sent to the hall until our parents came to pick us up. That was one scary day....and the ride home in the car swaying from side to side!!
i love stormy weather too but i lived in hampshire for the 87,88not so strong and 90 hurricanes and it was shit scary when you are surrounded by woods and with my luck went to florida in approx 1997 and they had a massive tornado about 5 miles from where i was staying and it killed a lot of people proper scary but i still love severe weather :O)
i was living in southampton at the time and was 18. Remember this well, as me and my mate went out in to it with a piece of large plastic and went to the top of southampton ski slope and gone blown off completly!! Well we were only 18!!
we do, 1998 boxing day was really was really bad, we had winds at 125mph, my bedroom window blew in, the floors were lifting and the ceiling were buckling as well as the window. Before the big gusts came you could feel the air being sucked out the house. It was really scary.
We get more weather like this probably than we ever have, and with climate change we might well have more.
I hate this sort of weather, though it's probably made worse for me by living somewhere that is particularly prone. I prefer crisp, bright, frosty weather, and wish we had more of it these days (2005/06 was quite good though).
Ah the Burns day storm. Remember it well.
