Not at all hard to believe. I used to pull-start my old Peterbilt (when it wouldn't charge) with an old Chevy S10 2wd pickup. Used it to help the truck up an icy slope once, too. It's all about that little bit of added traction. Remember, you aren't pushing the equivalent of the truck's weight. Otherwise, nobody would be able to push a car at all.

18 wheeler comes from the traditional american truck configuration. 2 wheels on the truck front axle, 2 drive axles with 4 wheels on each makes a total of 10 for the tractor unit.

That plus the 2 axles of the trailer (4 wheels to an axle) make a total of 18 for the tractor and trailer together.
