I'm always amazed at how the cute teen surf pop progressed to this album. I mean WTF?! Where did this come from? They went from bubblegum to high art. The complexity of some of the arrangements are almost at a classical level.
I have to admit Im kinda new to the beach boys as far as giving their music a real listen (although of course I knew who they for many years).
My idea of this band was unfortunately what a lot of the general publics probably is, a "nostalgia act" who toured on their surfer hits from the glory days of the early 60's.
learning a bit about the bands true history my admiration for them is growing a ton. PET SOUNDS is a stuning work of musical art, and this song is beautiful in a haunting way.
@EpifanoEntertainment lol you fucking idiot. I don't even listen to the Beach Boys all that often and I can still agree that this album is a work of genius. Grow up and appreciate real music.
@EpifanoEntertainment I don't know how old you are, but this album was way before my time. I think it's sometimes hard for younger people to appreciate the importance of music like this and The Beatles etc. We have never known a world without rock n roll. Although I did disagree with some of the albums Rolling Stone chose (TLC and Madonna come to mind!), you have to understand this Beach Boys record changed music with sound effects and layered harmonies, like Nirvana changed it in the '90s.
fuck grizzly bear, anyone who agrees with that farcical comment that grizzly bear is a "modern version" of the beach boys is clearly 17 and hasn't been around long enough to realize that is such a stupid comment that only fellow 17 years olds would agree with. first off, no one is like the beach boys, not even the beatles. and second, there is no "modern version" of 60's music. this is about as modern as pop music gets and any imitation can only be classified by their decade preceding "version"
@Jake29112 haha you are the dumbass for not realising that I was being sarcastic and trying to make a point. wheeeeeeeeeeeyyyyy. and plz don't stalk me like that.

@StillLifeWithMangoes I respect this album for what it is, and I know it was influential for its time, but as for the music, I'd rather take any ELO album over this in terms of instrumentation, beautiful arrangements, and general catchiness.

@Vpmatt Your right. That particular song on Pet Sounds has the misfortune of being on the same album as Caroline no, God only knows, You still believe in me and Wouldn't it be nice. Peppers. The Beach Boys in fact came up with a "formula" on how they got famous, and the Beatles used it too. So they are not all that separated as you guys are battling to say. It was more of the times but hasn't dated as well as Pet Sounds which IMO is simply timeless. But it's all a matter of taste I guess.
I don't understand how he fit so much into just 3 minutes! All of his songs on Pet Sounds are about 3 minutes long, yet if you listen to 'wouldn't it be nice' or 'hang on to your ego', it seems the songs span a great deal longer!
Anyone heard the released song from his new Gershwin album yet? It is FANTASTIC.
@nokturnal5647 I rank Pet sounds right up there with them, all are great albums, Sgt Peppers was the Beatles trying to beat or one up Pet Sounds...I love all those albums
I don't know if it's because i was born in the 50's, and grew up with the Beach Boys etc, but to me, nothing in this modern world can elevate to this level of Beauty. They may have all the digital technology available, but all that does NOT make everlasting timeless songs, of which the likes of Brian Wilson and his (then) contempories created.

I just found out Brian Wilson was only 23 when he made "Pet Sounds." And he was mostly deaf in one ear. And it was only released in mono. This is almost super-human really.
I've just discovered this wonderful album for the first time, and this song is far and away my favourite, it's really beautiful and moving. In fact I've never heard a song quite like it, it's almost like having an out-of-body experience, when he hits the high notes of the chorus.
It must have been so exciting to grow up in the 1960s with all this brilliant, innovative music coming out.
I'm always amazed at how the cute teen surf pop progressed to this album. I mean WTF?! Where did this come from? They went from bubblegum to high art. The complexity of some of the arrangements are almost at a classical level.

Pet Sounds is great, but I would rank Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Revolver, Rubber Soul and The White Album all higher.

I'm a big music fan and it's my first time hearing this one. Wow!! What a gorgeous, flowing ballad. What a brilliant mind Brian possesses.

No song captures the actual "feel" or atmosphere of an intimate moment, BOTH musically and lyrically, than this one does.
I am completely convinced of this.
