5/5. June Anderson is the best Norma I have heard after Callas and Sutherland. She is a tremendous operatic artist and is underappreciated. I really like her voice and admire her acting ability. Brava!
@teascher... WHAT SACRILEGE!!!! However this rendition is not her best because her voice has aged over time. If you really wanna hear her vocal chops in this aria check out the one in "Adelina Patti Queen of Songs" I think its part 2 here on youtube. 5/5 of course.

I like June's voice, but she uses some strange posture and affects to her face and body when she sings. She also is not breathing as well as she is capable in Casta Diva, but sounds much better than a lot I have heard.
She often looks like she's trying to sing out of the top of her head - placing the resonance, I guess; but it was always odd-looking. But beautifully sung - especially at her age. She's one who's grown into the role well and, hopefully, will known when to stop. (unlike Gruberova)
Very nice! Someone mentioned this was from 2006? That's the time I heard her sing it in Toronto, replacing Elena Prokina who was a no-show. I think Anderson is far superior to Prokina in this so I was not sorry. I think her voice is actually fresher here than when she sang it in Toronto. Brava!
June has matured into an excellent Norma. Most Norma are so "dramatic" of voice that they cannot even begin to handle the bel canto aspects of the role. On the other hand are bel canto "lyrics" who may be able to sing this aria well, but could never encompass the complete role. Anderson can do both; her sound is lyric but full, and her acting has great intensity. Her bel canto technique is fabulous. I saw her in a Lucia in the early 90s. Her singing and athletic acting were marverlous.
She sings Casta Diva so effortlessly. There is no strain in her face or her voice. She could probaly sing this over and over agian. Casta Diva is one of the most difficult aria in the soprano repertoire.
5/5 In my opinion, the successor to Joan Sutherland and one of the most underrated opera singers of our time. Check out the "Passion of Bel Canto" documentary on Youtube with her.
In the beginning I delike it.. but she turned. Very well performed. Yes, I must agree no other actual soprano sing this aria better, as far as I know.
Who dreams up these productions? She looks like a society matron about to host a garden party, giving some last minute instructions to the caterer's waitstaff...
I didn't like much Anderson as Norma, never. But I have to say that she is singing Norma since 1997, and she still can manage a Great performance of Norma while others young singer just can't do justice to Norma because they only can scream and shout with their voices. 5/5
Good diction. She struggles in the ribattuti and the dynamics have been more interesting in other versions, but I feel she conveys well the anxiety of Norma the woman. 4/5
Wow. I love her even as a more mature singer - she has a beautiful sound and gives off a regal air - in spite of the not-so-great orchestra and chorus around her. 5/5
my opinion - always moves around to much... so much effort yet little in the way emotive pay back. boring. Norma is to much of role for this singer. love the mozart and lucia though.
This Norma, much like Gruberova, is the belcanto Norma. Not the dramatic one. I think June does a fine job here. She still has a lyrical voice, and can manage to hold the Bellini line well. 5/5

I find June Anderson the worst Norma I ever heard! I bought her DVD and could not even finish it. Harsh voice. No trill or glissando. Ugh!

She was magnific also in 2007 at Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Athens, Greece. With all her force and energy there. I loved her!

the first opera performance I ever saw was June Anderson as Norma in Chicago in the 1990s - she still sounds wonderful in this role!

Amazing, she is still such a good Norma in 2006.
She is a great dramatic coloratura and I´m a fan. therefore 5/5

the best of the ACTUAL singers in the contest
she CAN do the coloratura as we all know
and her voice aged beautifully, just fitting this role nicely in 2006 when this was taped

Doubtlessly the best Norma since Callas! Even better then Sutherland. 5/5

I agree she sounds like Sutherland - and she has a similar jaw. Maybe that has something to do with it? I think she is pretty fabulous, anyhow.

I noticed that she has that Sutherland jaw line. Hmm. June is superb in this clip, Passionate and beautiful with sublime colorutura. 5/5
