Also, what the hell does it matter whether you're a Yankee or Southerner? Good and evil do not exist in war, and both sides committed their fair share of atrocities, and soldiers and citizens of both sides believed their side was the good guy. And need I remind everyone about how the Natives and immigrants were treated by both the North and the South? The war was purely over economics, and regardless of how you feel, the South was doomed to fail.
Whoever did the casting for this movie is a genius. Look at that Senator. Perfect. And that Lt. who tells Sam Bottoms he's gonna kick him so hard he'd be wearing his ass for a hat. Perfect. The old woman, the indians, the barroom whore, the bartender, well, all of them. Just great casting.

Eastwood seems to go for showing both sides of the war. He made two movies about Iwo Jima from both sides, for instance. The reality is that bravery and courage is scene by both sides of any war. There were heroic rebels in the Civil War. There were heroic North Vietnamese soldiers in our war with them. Besides, the Red Legs were every bit as savage as they come, it's historically accurate.....and I'm a Yankee(Maryland).

Starting at 1:51. I love Fletcher's lines, in regard to Capt. Terrell. Obviously there was some justified animosity between them, and you could see that in Fletcher's face the moment he caught sight of him "What the hell is this red-leg doin' here??" and then later after the senator speaks "Captain Terrell is a blood-thirsty son of a BITCH! He is a looter and pillager! He's the worst enemy those men have got!" lol he was quite pissed, considering how easy-going he seemed to be naturally.
