  • Shelley Winters could've kept the ship from capsizing...if only better use had been made of her tremendous influence.

  • The one thing that never made sense to me in this scene was, "why are the chairs on the ceiling that haven't fallen down?"

  • uhhh mabey because their connected to the floor?

  • haha, but why are dinner chairs connected to the floor? They have 4 legs so they don't spin.

  • well in the 60 and early 70s transatlantic ocean liners often had dinning chairs that had one leg attached to the floor with a kind of swivveling bolt thyp of thing so that when they hit rough seas the chairs would not go sliding aroung the rooms .

  • Hmm, I've never heard of a design where only one of the legs is attached to the floor, otherwise it would scratch the floor up every time someone tries to "rotate themselves" out. And if that was the case, how come only like 6 chairs are attached to the floor out of like 400? This scene to me smacks of a special effects oversight rather than something intentional, like they overlooked it and then saw it in post and were like "oh hey, that looks kind of cool, sort of disorienting, lets keep it!"

  • I just had to watch this because we're having our Christmas party tonight (finally) at a restaurant with a rickety addition that is tilting into the river. Think I'll get there early and see how well the tables are anchored.

  • The thing that makes this so legendary is that there was no use of computer bullshit--it wasn't so "perfect" like movies are now. Nothing is remotely real anymore. This was an actual set on a giant swivel, accompanied by giant mirrors and the actors had to...ACT! Oh my god, they had to actually ACT!

  • When did they use mirrors??? o_0

  • I totally agree with you. CGI has taken it's place to the next level. Is it replacing all the stunts? I've seen stunts in action at Universal Theme park in Orlando. It is incredible. And yes, they have to act!

  • "Sparks...mayday!"

    "Mayday!?"

"Yes, mayday...and i'd like you to know...that were all counting on you."

Before wave hits...calls back to operater.

"And i'd like you to know...that were all counting on you..."

  • End of film...pops head out of water...

"And i'd like you to know...that were all counting on you..."

  • lol i get it! leslie nealson was in airplane!

  • Tip: when taking a cruise--make sure you got a detachable gown with matching hot pants and always wear panties! (what else do you need?)

  • it would have suck going to the bathroom while the ship capsizes

  • Did you see the bathroom scene? Everything was upside down! lol

  • I Love it! :)

  • id love to be in one of those disaster movies as an extra. run and scream. haha

  • This scene freaked me the F out as a child !!

    It's very well done.

  • I saw this movie before.... And stuff.

  • I think they just had too much to drink.

  • Those paper New Years Eve hats are the best!

  • ok people just stop panicking and follow where the ship is tilting, then you wouldnt have to plumit to yo death

  • true, but that probrobly won't help if you follow the tilt and a grand piano lands on top of you.

  • I cried when Linda died because thats my moms name...lol

  • At 2:05 if the ship is upside down why are the chairs still in a normal position?

  • The chairs started to move after the ship was on its side.

  • Yes but when the ship is completly upside down look at the chairs there still in normal position... Look at 2:05...

  • I see that...

  • Its kinda cheap but its from 1971 ohh well-- Merry Christmas my friend!!!

  • A 1970's classic that came out when I wasn't even born yet.

    The same to you.

  • It came out in 71, the year I was born...

  • No, it premiered December 12, 1972.

  • Ohh really in the TV guide it says 1971, my mistake.

  • Yes, 1972. And if you watch the opening bridge scenes, there's the number '72' under one of the bridge windows. I often wondered it that was relevant to the year - Irwin Allen's sneaky way of putting it in the film. I saw TPA for the first time in March 1973 still at the main theater near me. Movies nowdays stay in theaters, what, a week or two then they're shifted to the 'dollar' theaters?

  • on many of the older ocean liners ( the Poseiden was a direct copy of the Queen Mary ) many chairs where starpeed to the floor by a sort of industrial sise ' rubber- band" that pervented them from moving in rough seas. Much of the technological advanncements in terms of stabilizers that are installed on the newer liners did not exists, ergo the need for bolting everything down, I didn't learn of this myself until recently.

  • i am never going on cruise..and compared to the new one this is terrible..but i have to remember it was like the 50's when they made that

  • Yeah obviously this is nothing on the remake but still it was a good try.

  • The new movie 'Poseidon' sucked!

  • Hold on second...how are you typing this? I didn't know they had computers back in retirement homes.

  • Hey, stoonahd, fuck you, huh!

  • I am going on a cruise this coming weekend. Leaving from San Juan on the Carnival Victory.

  • I'm never going on a cruise that will go thro new years!

  • Not bad for a film made in the early 70s.

    Great effects.

  • This is great and funny. Thanks alot!!!!!!!!!!!

  • heh its kinda funny how they all have to 'act' they re falling

on 1 20 someone just pushes over that thing they re leaning on lol

  • I've seen this so many times I can't count them..but I never noticed that! It's one of my favs always will be. Very captivating for a 9 year old boy back then watching it on the big screen.

  • This what you get when you dont fly!

  • This is when you start making your way to the top so that you won't have a long fall down

  • LOL One of the passengers fell from a table into one of the chandeliers.

  • I saw this movie as a kid, and to this very day, some 36 years later, whenever it's around the holiday season, I always, always, always make sure I stay close to the Chrsitmas tree. You just never know....

  • YOU JUST CAN'T GET BETTER THAN THIS...the piano sliding down the wall (1:54), Stella and Gene(symbolic hooker and priest) rolling over the tabletop (1:17)!!! AWESOME! There's Titanic, Poseidon, bla bla... NOTHING compares to an original...this IS the Grandaddy of disaster films.

  • Symbolic hooker?

  • good and evil...(hooker AND priest)...symbolism.

  • Poor passangers, they pay so much money for a luxury cruise and the only thing they get is there heads banging on the floor

  • MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY

  • ROFL look at the captain shake at 00:48!

  • hahaha at 1:21 u can see that they're bein pushed, thats funny.

  • haahhaha i noticed that too

  • I love how Manny falling is obviously a stunt double. Also, I totally don't get the chairs stuck to the ceiling.

I saw this 8 days in a row when it first came out.

  • On ocean liners, chairs were tethered to fasteners on the floor to prevent them from going flying if the ship encountered a heavy roll at sea.

  • you have to admit that seeing chairs stuck to the ceiling is funny though

  • THIS MOVIE ROCKS my fav scene 2 =D!

  • Best Movie,Best Acting,Best Everything! This Movie Had Heart!!!

  • Pamela Sue Martin's dress just made this movie in the same way that Scarlett's dress made from curtains made GWTW!

  • This movie is EPIC!!!

  • lol it so slow lol and all the cahirs are still on the floor(celing now lol)

  • Yeah ... some ocean liners back then bolted furniture and chairs down so they wouldn't slide around in storms. The chairs were attached to the floor with rope and that's why they didn't move. However it's kind of hard to tell in the movie. I actually think it makes sense to bolt the tables down. If the ship hit a wave and tilted you could hold on to them like in the movie.

  • maiden?? ahaha

  • xP its mayday

  • demand a restoration don't you all wanna see a silver screen copy ?

what we have is a lazer disc transfer to dvd not film note the letter box size when you attempt to stretch it out to elimiate

how can the fox dvd division give

us more of the towering inferno not poseidon 1972, we know they can come on fans demand a restoration !!!

  • Awesome!! 5*

  • I still think that the original is by far the best version of this story.

  • Your rite. ^_^

  • That's true of most movies. The only exception I can think of offhand is THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL. Geraldine Page was born to play the lead role in the remake.

  • this one is good but i like the re-make better it dosent look as fake, and i have a question y was the boat tipping before it was hit by the wave?

  • The ship was turning, not tipping, the captain thought by turning the ship around they would avoid the tidalwave.

  • Oh, ok thank you!

  • The two babes in their little hot shorts are the real reason to keep revisiting this classic.

  • I love this movie! This is one of the best scenes in the entire movie! One thing I don't understand is why they didn't put this scene to music. It's sounds so much better with it.

  • I havent seen much of this movie yet but so far i prefer poseiden more until ive seen this one it looks cool and yes usually the origional usually rules over sequals

  • ...after 35 years, this is still one of my favorite movies!

  • poseidon is een geweldige film !!!

  • They don't make 'em like that anymore

  • why are the chairs glued to the floor? kinda funny

  • Why do people fall off in this clip (or in the 1970's movies)?

  • Poseidon Adventure the original was good. The sequal sucked.

  • lol id walk on the wall, as it capsizes.

  • The higher the ceiling, the longer you are falling!:S

  • World peace, dudes. It's just a movie :-)

  • LOL if you weren't talking to me then why is it you reply on my comments BOBO KA KASE TINGNAN KO LANG KUNG MAINTINDIHAN MO MGA SINASABI KO SAYO HAHAHA TANGA O ANU KA NGAUN??? NAINTINDIHAN MU NA BA??? BAKA PILIPINO KA RIN HA???

  • You started this fight, so stop being rude you sick idiot!!!!

  • kawawa ka nman hahaha hndi mu maintindihan ang mga sinasabo ko noh??? hehehe tanga bobo

  • guys the remake sucks the original is cool! and everybody knows that

  • i seen this at the show when it first came out-i can tell to you, that everybody at the time was at the end of there seats!

  • someone here is affected i'm, not talking to him but he likes to talk to me duh such a lozer

  • I'm not talking to you landlubber...

  • LOL! I like the new one way better. I especially like how that ship started tilting way before it even got hit by the wave...

I like the new one a lot better. The old one makes me laugh.

  • The new one makes ME laugh XD! That ship was not even REAL!!! How unreal that ship in Poseidon looked!!! THIS is the LEGENDARY ORIGINAL!!! And the actors in Poseidon... worse than worst!!!

  • I thought it looked pretty good. I thought the actors weren't bad. It certainly could've been worse.

    Just my humblest opinion.

  • Opinions is always okay :), I prefer The Poseidon Adventure over Poseidon :).

  • For me it's a combination of cool effects and decent acting. I will admit that the CG ship at the beginning does look a little stupid...

  • good!!!! i like the new one!!!! they rock!!!

  • P.S and if you like the new one better than the ORIGINAL then DON'T COMMENT ON THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love that alarm sound XD!

  • This is kind of funny, just the way they depict it. LOL But for whatever reason, that's just the way older movies were 99% of the time.

  • The original is a classic while the remake was a forgetable money losing film for Warner Bros. The huge model of ss Poseidon (actually Queen Mary after her 1968-70 rebuilding) used in the original film looked so much better than the CGI of the new ship. I almost laughed at the opening scene of 'Poseidon' w/the ship at sea.

  • TOTALLY AGREE!

  • Umm, no... Poseidon (2006) was good, but this, The Poseidon Adventure (1972), is MUCH better than the 2006 "REMAKE". Yes you heard right, I said "REMAKE", the 2006 version is just a "REMAKE" of the "ORIGINAL" from 1972. So shut up ranking down the ORIGINAL because the ORIGINAL is better. Better actors/actresses, better effects etc. especially for back then!

  • the newer the better the modern the better effects if you can't talk with manners then shut up

  • Who began to talk without manners huh? You did.

"why cgi is used to make a movie better!!! but this movie isn't beautiful and this is terrible they did not show the rest of the ship everything was always in the ballroom even when the ship is capsizing they didn't show the other parts of the ship and i don't like this i hate this one i love the 2006 version this sucks!!!"

THIS, is pure original. And you use words that makes me throw up. So mind your language.

  • Plus I'm older than you, you speak like a 3 year-old.

  • I like the new one better. Cool music, better effects, better actors.

It was way more convincing than this one. It was intense!

  • The ORIGINAL is unbeatable, and it's WAY better actors in The Poseidon Adventure than in Poseidon. The ORIGINAL PWNS the remake every time.

  • I heard in the "Making Of" video that they didn't exactly try to remake it... they just reinvented it sort of.

  • yeah i agree with you!!!! your totally smart than this rude man

  • If you meant me then just to let you know YOU'RE the rude IDIOT here.

  • how dare you say that RedFive1231

  • Better than Gene Hackman? No way. Critics sat Gene made this film. They're right.

  • I actually like the newer version, it has better effects and is more realistic

  • because they just took the picture from the ceiling to the floor when the ship is capsizing everything are messed up but when it capsized already the floor is arranged and not messed up I'M TALKING ABOUT THE FLOOR NOT THE CEILING WHICH THEY STEPPED ON WHEN THE SHIP CAPSIZED and the tables and chairs did not stick to the ceiling but they sticked on the floor

  • Ocean liners often had some furniture bolted to the deck. The Queen Mary had the dining room chairs attached to the deck and even the chairs had ropes bolted so they not move off if the ship hit a strong storm which can happen on the North Atlantic.

  • I never understood why the table and chairs stick to the ceiling. Go figure.

  • my mother is 10 years old when she saw this movie i really love this than any remake

  • wow the original version!

it looks so fantastic for it's time1=)

  • I actually like this version more so than the remake. I was quite saddened when I left the theater after viewing the 2006 version. Why? I felt the movie's speed was WAY too fast. And the fact almost EVERYTHING was CGI . . . damned CGI. Good for some stuff, but not when it feels like you're watching a "cartoon".

  • The new one is better because the chairs actually fell. In this movie the chairs don't move and they're not even bolted to the ground like the tables are.

  • Actually, they are. On older ships, elastics are attached on the chairs which attach them to the floor to prevent the chairs from falling over in heavy weather.

  • I have probably seen this movie dozens of times now, and first saw it opening day back in 1972. The lines were around the block, and everybody agreed that it was one of the most exciting movies ever made. Sure, special effects have come a long way since then, but they still look terrific, and the story was simply gripping. My stomach was in knots when I saw it the first time, and there were many in the audience crying when Belle died. Truly one of the best movies ever made!

  • Wonderful movie for that age!!!The new one sucks!

  • my excuses but i like the 2006 movie better

  • Are you kidding me? The new one was horrid!

  • Please leave him to his own opinion. Everyone thinks differently depending on their own tastes. That's why you can't trust ratings. The editor might not like it, but it doesn't mean you won't. Right?

  • I agree. the special effects were DECADES better! In this one, when the alarms go off, everyone looks like their haveing group sex...

  • It was the 70's... there wasn't that kind of technology. I'm sorry to the person I snapped at. I hated the new one.

  • well the new one did have the ship capsize a little too fast

  • you must be 12 years old then, dork.

  • This is a classic scene from the early seventies. I waited in line for 2 hours just to see it and it was worth the wait. I beg to differ, but the remake suked, big time. Computer generated crap annoys me and I have bceom quite the computer geek in my old age.

  • I agree...nothing beats the old-school feel of yesterday's movies

  • watched this for the first time today, I was planning on sleeping through it but I got hooked!

  • Weird people fall whene the does not even toch it.

  • what i anti-climax! hahaha, now i know why they refilmed this movie! hahaha

  • umm, I take it that dinner is canceled?

  • ujrtty

  • WOW.........

  • これがセプテントリオンか

  • This is a great movie for 1972... but why the chairs don't fall down? It wasn't that hard to do that... was it?

  • The chairs are apparently nailed to the floor.

  • The chairs are NOT nailed! look carefully at times 01:14 - 01:19 - 01:32 - 01:40 - 02:03 Specially in 01:14 you can see how easily they fall..so they must be falling all over the place!!!

  • 2:03 is the best part in this scene

  • 2006 is better

  • Yeah but this version didn't tank at the box office.

  • Haha. I LOVE it.

  • why i feel this scene wasnt as painful as the one in the 2006 film?

  • lol the part where they are falling is so unrealistic. the new one is way better.

  • i agree

  • yea. but remember back then they didnt have all the special effects that are avaulable today. either way. i like the second one because fergie's in it LOL!!!

  • You know the part in the remake, when the whole movie happens? Yeahh, that's unrealistic..!

  • lol ya

this scene is good for a 1972 movie

to us its unrealistic but to the people watching this movie in the 70's they were terrified.

  • Who wrote this? Did he run for President against Bush?

    Good movie!

  • "Oh my God"! This looks scary unaware of what's happening, that is until they know they've been rolled over into a capsized position, and so the adventure beings, an adventure of survival.

  • Why are you so afraid of dying. Sure, I am, but if you die, wont you go to heaven. Unless, you've been bad. You'd go to HELL

  • Ok. Lets get this strait. Many people belive in hevaen and hell. But we have NO prrof that there is souch thing. maybe you get re-born or just go in to a never ending sleep?

  • The model of the Poseidon is so cool! It's awesome how they made the tidal wave!

  • it was like it was crashing on shore im in 9th grade and i know that wow ur stupid

  • omh this is so stupid!

    people are so faking!

  • Obviously they're FAKING IT... It's a fucking MOVIE..! What, you thought they'd actually kill hundreds of people??!

  • LMAOOO!!!! Good one.

  • Actually, Zane, I remember reading a letter to the editor back when the disaster movie mania was at full tilt, suggesting that they use death row prisoners as extras in disaster movies, and kill them in the disaster to make the effects more realistic. While I don';t advocate for the death penalty, there *is* something to be said for realistic FX in movies. :-)

  • Could they have done a worse job of holding on and not falling?

  • Conceivably, yes. They could have not held on at all and spared everyone involved that incredibly out-of-place and annoying scream at 2:08.

  • You could only truly appeciate this film at the theater when it premiered. All time fav!

  • i lAUGH WHEN THAT GUY GOES IN THE LIGHT

  • Me too! That's the only reason I searched for this clip on Youtube.

  • Thats what i thought lol.

  • why are the chairs not falling while people are???

  • Chairs on ships are often anchored down with a strap of elastic to keep them from upsetting in rough seas.

  • They Are Bolted to the floor dumbass
