Haven't heard this song for years until they played on wvlg The Villages FL radio station the other day. Had to find it again on YouTube to listen to it a few more times... It's great
Dennis Locorriere and I sat together in study hall at Emerson High School in Union city, NJ. Dennis was asked to leave school since he refused to cut his hair. I had no doubt, and told him so, that he would be a success. Even then he was a great guy with a personality to match.
I agree this is genius. What happened to American culture after this? It seems to be commercial bullshit, autotune, egoism, war on terror, plastic operations and Hollywood endings nowadays. America should get their shit together and lead the way again.
I will never forget Dr Hook coming to Australia and appearing on the most popular late night variety show of the time. The interview with the host was hilarious and instead of just singing Sylvia's Mother as planned they took over and just kept singing all their hits. I think the show went about an hour and a half longer than it should have. Thank God the producers kept rolling coz it was fabulous!!
people who like dr hook might be able to answer a question about a song i'm loking for about a long haired guy tucking his hair up under his hat before going into a redneck bar and when discovered he chases them around the parking lot

It's a breakdown! He's a stalker/rapist trying to get her back...that's why he wants to make a deal, keep her quiet, leave on good terms. Misses Avery is too canny for him...listen to the song, Shel Silverstein didn't write 'pop' , he wrote poetry for the disturbed and the broken hearted....this is a song of pure genius.
@jollywigs you need to learn about whom you are talking before you bother to open your ignorant mouth or lay your silly gay fingers upon a keyboard your rendetion of this song is completely wrtong and to refer to uncle shlby in that manner simply makes you a homosexual that has yet to come out of the closet

I was/am such a huge Hook fan. The way Dennis was able to make this song so emotional is a huge testament to his talent given that he was literally stoned off his ass.
just confirms "dont judge a book by its cover"..heard this when it came out, brought it then was suprised when i saw who sang it....im a motown fan and the emotion in this is awesome, just how dr hook become...thanks for posting jose, lovely sound
No other band that I've ever listened to has ever gotten instant emotion out of me like Dr Hook and The Medicine show...I will always be their greatest fan.<3
@brandy170 Ray wears an eyepatch because he lost his eye in a car crash. Because of that the group almost chose the name, 'Capt Hook and the Medicine Show'
I saw Dr. Hook and the Medicine show in concert about 25 years ago. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. It was at the Valley Forge Music Fair. Unforgettable !
the operator says 40 cents more for the next 3 minutes....this lyric would have to be for the next 3 seconds with the cost of using a public phone today.....love this tune
I can just hear so much sorrow in the singer's voice. I love the way he gets into character. I sometimes wonder if this is the last phone call the character makes, whether he commits suicide after the phone call. That's just the vibe I get from the song, that he wants to say goodbye to her before he kills himself. I don't know if anyone else gets that vibe, but that's what I hear in his voice.
I heard a radio interview with the band on a San Francisco FM station after this song and "The Cover of Rolling Stone" came out in 1972. They were singing gag lyrics for both songs on the air. One line they sang was "Sylvia's father says, 'Sylvia's pregnant, you son of a bitch, don't come 'round here no more.'" True story!
I remember hearing this song many times since it was released in early 1972. It was the first of many songs Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show recorded that was written by Shel Silverstein. To me, lead singer Dennis Locorriere sounds like he's bawling the lyrics.
The song is autobiographical. Shel Silverstein was in love with Sylvia Pandolfi and called her up just when she was packing for her wedding. Her mother, Louisa Pandolfi, tried to convince Shel Silverstein that the love was over
This is a song that would make me cry every time I would hear it. Because it happened to me in real life. She was my first real love. Her name was Lynn. I never did understand why her mother didn't like me.
Dr Hook, ie...Pancho Goldstien was given 32 million dollars to go and "do something". He failed. However, a group of Nam vets felt sorry for him after he poked out his eye eating a banana on a stick. So they started to sing and make music to buy Pancho a spoon. the rest is on you tube.....
@jws54 sorry i dont understand what u are talking about.i thought you were talking about the band member with the eye patch.i read he lost his eye in a car accident.please explain
I'm really glad I grew up with a mom and dad who got me hooked on good music. I loved this song the moment I heard it. I love someone who actually puts actual emotion in what they are singing.
We have a cassette tape collection in my workshop numbering at least a couple hundred sourced from charity shops.Played this song from a Dr Hook album and the young apprentice wanted to cut his wrists.Gold!
Its one thing to luv Dr. Hook, its another to experience them playing LIVE!!! Thumbs up Josegeraldofonseca and thankin' ya for this AWESOME upload!! = )
@lockwpa Shel ahd a 'thing' with Sylvia Pandolfi (not Avery) for a number of years. If you Google 'Sylvia Pandolfi' there's a video of 'Shel's Song' (which is actually 'Sylvia's Mother') on Mike Lynch Cartoons, which shows Louisa (mother) and Sylvia talking about the day Shel phoned, and this song. The mother looks a bit of a rough dog, in fact I think she's so ugly not even a sniper would 'take her out.'
I remember running away from home and some guy drives up to this building I was hiding in and this song, was blaring from his car radio system. that is why I love this song, ha ha
I am only 21 years old i know every word to almost every one of dr. hooks songs. i would give anything to be able to see them live. they are my favorite group. i love them.
one of the best songs ever recorded, i worked at woolworths (yes sad but true) in gloucester at the time this record came out . but what great memories it brings back, still gives me goosebumps when i hear ir
ik vind deze muziek echt relax het is mijn vaders tijd zelf ben ik pas 15 jaar. maar mijn vader speelde deze soort muziek altijd aff en nu vind ik het nog altijd leuke muziek maar ik luister meer naar Nederhop!!
you guys listen to the song.....forget sylvia and sylvia's mother....kill the f*****ing operator instead, she's ripping off this poor guy. it's bad enough he's gettin dumped by his girlfriend, this operator charged him 3 times throughout the whole song. Guess they haven't invented cellphone yet when they wrote this song or it would have said something like "and my battery went low after the next 3 minutes... please, Mrs. Avery, just gotta talk to her..... :)hahaha
Sure can ... I remember hearing this when I was about 10 and crying for the poor young man ... you can just feel his angst, his frustration at not being able to speak to her and having to find change and feed it into the phone while his life is falling apart ...
this is one of my favorite songs it reminds me of a good friend that has been missing for a few years wedont know where she is and we pray she will return home safe and sound remember sylvia we all love you and want you home
I was raised on all kinds of music, but Dr. Hook was simply family to us. We listened All the time. They kept me company while everyone else was at work @ nite and during day. Was never scared when I had them on. Dennis is an underrated talent. Was able to see them in concert a few times, even kissed by Rick!! My 13 year old heart was happy. Most of my childhood/teen memories involve them. Thats where I first learned of Shel Silverstein too. THANKS for the memories and the love!!
I always heard Dr. Hook growing up...the appropriate songs lol. Every Sunday was cleaning day and my parents blasted this throughout the house. Was born in '85 btw.
Doctor Hook was such a great guy. I always thought he was the patch-wearing, one-eyed mookie with the crybaby gas, but he was the beardie whiner. Why don't they make "kill yourself" music like this any more?
Sylvia's mother is a big buttinsky,,I bet she is'nt even giving Sylvia the message,I bet Sylvia's mother is a big, liar, liar pants on fire, and that poor sylvia is up in her room waiting for him to call,,,man,,,if I could only have been there and give these poor young lovers a cell phone, and tell them to tell Mrs Avery to butt out.
@smile4mejmarie If you Google 'Sylvia Pandolfi' there's a video of 'Shel's Song' (which is actually 'Sylvia's Mother') which shows Louisa (mother) and Sylvia talking about the day Shel phoned and this song. The mother looks a bit of a rough dog, in fact I think she's so ugly not even a sniper would 'take her out.'
Great Memory Days and Years. The 70's were the days we'd do anything to go up, down, or sideways. Still rocking with the same songs but now I've got enough brains to find a stopping place and go to bed.............the mornings are different now too. THANKS FOR A GREAT MEMORY SONG AND FUN TIME IN LIFE.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO SYLVIAS FATHER. IS HE STILL ALIVE ? DOES ANYBODY ELSE GIVE A HOOT ABOUT HIM BUT ME ?PLEASE REPLY A.S.A.P. !

I'm really glad I grew up with a mom and dad who got me hooked on good music. I loved this song the moment I heard it. I love someone who actually puts actual emotion in what they are singing.

This song is excellent...whoever wrote it had their heart broken by Sylvia Avery. Wonder where she is today?
lockwpa 1 year ago
@lockwpa Shel ahd a 'thing' with Sylvia Pandolfi (not Avery) for a number of years. If you Google 'Sylvia Pandolfi' there's a video of 'Shel's Song' (which is actually 'Sylvia's Mother') on Mike Lynch Cartoons, which shows Louisa (mother) and Sylvia talking about the day Shel phoned, and this song. The mother looks a bit of a rough dog, in fact I think she's so ugly not even a sniper would 'take her out.'

In French it translates to "Sylvia's Father" Just type Sacha Distel "Le Pere de Sylvia" Clean cut French singer, probably early 80's.

you guys listen to the song.....forget sylvia and sylvia's mother....kill the f*****ing operator instead, she's ripping off this poor guy. it's bad enough he's gettin dumped by his girlfriend, this operator charged him 3 times throughout the whole song. Guess they haven't invented cellphone yet when they wrote this song or it would have said something like "and my battery went low after the next 3 minutes... please, Mrs. Avery, just gotta talk to her..... :)hahaha

@ptcpaul
Sure can ... I remember hearing this when I was about 10 and crying for the poor young man ... you can just feel his angst, his frustration at not being able to speak to her and having to find change and feed it into the phone while his life is falling apart ...

It is the recording they listen to in Paradise --

I was raised on all kinds of music, but Dr. Hook was simply family to us. We listened All the time. They kept me company while everyone else was at work @ nite and during day. Was never scared when I had them on. Dennis is an underrated talent. Was able to see them in concert a few times, even kissed by Rick!! My 13 year old heart was happy. Most of my childhood/teen memories involve them. Thats where I first learned of Shel Silverstein too. THANKS for the memories and the love!!

Doctor Hook was such a great guy. I always thought he was the patch-wearing, one-eyed mookie with the crybaby gas, but he was the beardie whiner. Why don't they make "kill yourself" music like this any more?
captainarchernx01 2 years ago 3
captainarchernx01...They do make "kill yourself music" ..and then they OD on their crack and meth..Its a crying shame.
