  • Haven't heard this song for years until they played on wvlg The Villages FL radio station the other day. Had to find it again on YouTube to listen to it a few more times... It's great

  • dennis and ray and the group are all rite.

  • I miss the day's when song's had a meaning and were sung with heart..

    Peace from Old Hippie

  • Love this song.

  • HE SİNGS SO HEARTFELT....AS IF HE REALLY HAD ISSUES WITH SYLVIA'S MOTHER !

  • Dennis Locorriere and I sat together in study hall at Emerson High School in Union city, NJ. Dennis was asked to leave school since he refused to cut his hair. I had no doubt, and told him so, that he would be a success. Even then he was a great guy with a personality to match.

  • love this song

  • I can't seem to find the comment I posted last year... oh well, still a great song.

  • I saw them once at "THE CREST" sheerness 24 years ago.

  • i fell in love with Sylvia's mother when i was about 10...Still can't get her out of my mine. :)))

  • I agree this is genius. What happened to American culture after this? It seems to be commercial bullshit, autotune, egoism, war on terror, plastic operations and Hollywood endings nowadays. America should get their shit together and lead the way again.

  • shear fucking genius! Don't hear stuff like this anymore. Sad. PEace

  • ese man estaba pasado de bareta jijiji marihuana

  • Great sound on this vid.... I love singing this song!

  • I will never forget Dr Hook coming to Australia and appearing on the most popular late night variety show of the time. The interview with the host was hilarious and instead of just singing Sylvia's Mother as planned they took over and just kept singing all their hits. I think the show went about an hour and a half longer than it should have. Thank God the producers kept rolling coz it was fabulous!!

  • people who like dr hook might be able to answer a question about a song i'm loking for about a long haired guy tucking his hair up under his hat before going into a redneck bar and when discovered he chases them around the parking lot

  • @TheMrtimmy28 SIGNS??

  • @Sueski2 thanks sueski at first i though you got it and i watched a signs video but its not the right one the one i'm thinking of still about a long haired hippie tucking his hair up under his hat and the rednecks dicover him and hes sings at the end something about shooting gravel as he sped around the parking lot. its killing me lol thanks anyway i'm going to look under jim stafford who did wildwood weed and some other funny songs

  • @Sueski2 thanks for the yahoo link but i think you might like the site i found to find the song elyrics.net -- you can browse by band name, text in song or song name i just put in long haired hippie and it gave me the song. it's going to be so useful to me i cant imagine how much maybe i'll get back to my old high school nickname " THE ENCYCLOPEDIA INSANEICA cause i had so much in my dome it was crazy i had an eidactic memory. you say1/23/78 and i tell you the day and the headlines

  • @Sueski2 sueski i got it its a song called uneasy rider i found a cover of it by charlie daniels . i had brain cancer and my therapist says to remember songs from all my life and some times things pop into my head and it works great my memory is coming back thru music. day by day i remmeber stuff , thank you so much for trying cause signs brought many memories back too i'm cancer free, half titanium skull and have to shave the other side but i'm still here at 58 FU MR CANCER thanks sue

  • @TheMrtimmy28 i think you got 2 songs confused, the 5 man electrical band, had a song called signs about tucking his hair up under his hat. and i know the other one but cant think of it now after all it was the 70s.

  • @chance501 you should have read my other post i found a site called elyrics.com and you put in band name, song title or any words from the song and it pops up with the song . once i found that it was easy the song is UNEASY RIDER BY CHARLIE DANIELS WHEN YOU CANT FIND A SONG BUT KNOW A SNIPPET elyrics .com IS THE PLACE TO GO OOOOPS so thanks i knew signs but also knew it wasnt it but i did find what i wanted . thanks

  • @hymnlover1 BROUGHT BACK THE MEMORY OF ME GROPING MY 13 YR OLD SISTER AND NEARLY GETTING HER PREGNANT THAT ONE FRIDAY NIGHT AS THIS WAS PLAYING SOFTLY IN TTHE BACKGROUND....NOW BEFORE YOU GET YOUR PENIS IN AN UPROAR., WE WERE BOTH THE SAME AGE.

  • Shel also wrote Johnny cashs A boy named Sue....Great Great writer

  • Great song! Great group. This is sng with such emotion and conviction. Brought tears to my eyes...back then. Still does today. Thanks for posting.

  • Awesome childhood memories with this one !

  • this is a sad song

  • one of the most influencial songs of my late teens!

  • Cannot tell you how much I love this song. Beautifully and heartbreakingly sung, stupendous harmonies and Shel Silverstein's great words. Can't ask for more.

  • Perfect.

  • One of my first singles . I think my first single with a rock and roll band. 1972?

  • Dr. Hook did a live show at knott's berry farm many years ago it was good.

  • now that's purrdee

  • great song -- the 70's -- man what a ride -- joined the army -- guess we all knew a " SYLVIA " in our lives -- this song won't let us forget and i don't want to -- good memories --- wore the uniform for 29 yrs. and 6 months -- WHAT A RIDE !!!!

  • @bloodlight58 Thanks for your service. There really are many that appriciate it!

  • An absolute shame AM radio is dead, generations will never hear this or other great music, it seems to be Rock, Rap and shifty country, I say shifty because it us not country anymore Taylor Swift couldn't carry a note in a briefcase, and how the hell is Kid Rock country, remake one fukin song sad sad sad

  • Saint Silvanus

  • One of the great songs of lost love and aching hearts.

  • Uncle shilby???? You, young man, need to learn about art, literature and music.

(of which you're obviously know nothing) before you comment!

Shel Silverstein, was a great poet and the subtext of the song is famous. Where on earth have you been all your life? Please grow before you crow, ignorance might please an audience but it doesn't entertain adults!

  • @jollywigs i love this song

  • @jollywigs not just a great poet he was one of a kind , and ray ,Dennis and the rest of the medicine show will never be duplicated and if you watch any group since then they are all way to serious these guys got on stage and had as much fun and the audience thank you for posting

  • i saw dr hook about 16 years agoin a little night club called hobo's night life in statesville,n.c. it was really awesome tobe able tostand right next to the band while dancing, they souded as good then as ever

  • WOW, tks for posting.

  • good to hear dr hook

  • Year 1972 !!!

    What a year !!!

    What a song !!!

    And memory that brings !!!

  • At 1:20 i think that is the violin player that later went to play with the band "Kansas"......Awesome post thank you

  • Class song

  • what a song

  • It's not sorrow!

It's a breakdown! He's a stalker/rapist trying to get her back...that's why he wants to make a deal, keep her quiet, leave on good terms. Misses Avery is too canny for him...listen to the song, Shel Silverstein didn't write 'pop' , he wrote poetry for the disturbed and the broken hearted....this is a song of pure genius.

  • @jollywigs you need to learn about whom you are talking before you bother to open your ignorant mouth or lay your silly gay fingers upon a keyboard your rendetion of this song is completely wrtong and to refer to uncle shlby in that manner simply makes you a homosexual that has yet to come out of the closet

  • It's not sorrow!

  • I was/am such a huge Hook fan. The way Dennis was able to make this song so emotional is a huge testament to his talent given that he was literally stoned off his ass.

  • Liked this song like forever.

  • Luuuuuv this song :-)

  • Classic never ends !

  • just confirms "dont judge a book by its cover"..heard this when it came out, brought it then was suprised when i saw who sang it....im a motown fan and the emotion in this is awesome, just how dr hook become...thanks for posting jose, lovely sound

  • No other band that I've ever listened to has ever gotten instant emotion out of me like Dr Hook and The Medicine show...I will always be their greatest fan.<3

  • @thebelchercgannel, sorry to hear of your own sorrows but the worse song ever made right after it's a Small World is Lido Shuffle

  • You can't blame any mother wanting the best for their daughter!!!

  • why is the guy wearing an eyepatch?

  • @brandy170 car accident i think

  • cos

  • @brandy170 I suspect VERY HIGHLY that he's MISSING AN EYE!

  • @brandy170 i think many years ago, he promised an old girl friend , as they were parting ways, that he would keep an eye out for her.

  • @brandy170 Ray wears an eyepatch because he lost his eye in a car crash. Because of that the group almost chose the name, 'Capt Hook and the Medicine Show'

  • I saw Dr. Hook and the Medicine show in concert about 25 years ago. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. It was at the Valley Forge Music Fair. Unforgettable !

  • PleeEEASE Mrs. Avery

  • the operator says 40 cents more for the next 3 minutes....this lyric would have to be for the next 3 seconds with the cost of using a public phone today.....love this tune

  • I can just hear so much sorrow in the singer's voice. I love the way he gets into character. I sometimes wonder if this is the last phone call the character makes, whether he commits suicide after the phone call. That's just the vibe I get from the song, that he wants to say goodbye to her before he kills himself. I don't know if anyone else gets that vibe, but that's what I hear in his voice.

  • I heard a radio interview with the band on a San Francisco FM station after this song and "The Cover of Rolling Stone" came out in 1972. They were singing gag lyrics for both songs on the air. One line they sang was "Sylvia's father says, 'Sylvia's pregnant, you son of a bitch, don't come 'round here no more.'" True story!

  • I remember hearing this song many times since it was released in early 1972. It was the first of many songs Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show recorded that was written by Shel Silverstein. To me, lead singer Dennis Locorriere sounds like he's bawling the lyrics.

  • ahhhhh.... the memories Dr. Hook brings back, they were sooo great. No one like them. Unfortunately. So much talent.

  • The song is autobiographical. Shel Silverstein was in love with Sylvia Pandolfi and called her up just when she was packing for her wedding. Her mother, Louisa Pandolfi, tried to convince Shel Silverstein that the love was over

  • I can hear the pain in the singers voice and its amazing. What a beautiful track.

  • Ashamed, I've cried

  • This is a song that would make me cry every time I would hear it. Because it happened to me in real life. She was my first real love. Her name was Lynn. I never did understand why her mother didn't like me.

  • Dr Hook, ie...Pancho Goldstien was given 32 million dollars to go and "do something". He failed. However, a group of Nam vets felt sorry for him after he poked out his eye eating a banana on a stick. So they started to sing and make music to buy Pancho a spoon. the rest is on you tube.....

  • @jws54 wtf

  • @amo652

it's a true story, I should know, I was in Keshan, his Mother was my sister, Sylvia....

  • @jws54 dude...is this really true?! Was it really shel and yr. sister!?!?

  • @rockydigsblues

    yes we are related

  • @jws54 sorry i dont understand what u are talking about.i thought you were talking about the band member with the eye patch.i read he lost his eye in a car accident.please explain

  • @amo652

yes, there was a car involved in the accident...it was a fluke type of thing

  • @jws54 whats the whole story?

  • @amo652

pretty much just a combat grunt who loses his girl to what her mother thinks is a

"better" man. The Mother was a real bitch and ruined the whole thing by saying

    the boyfriend was KIA...

  • What a Song :'( Just Lovely!

  • AWE BEAU...TI...FULXXXXXX

As are most every song they sing, beautiful to watch them sing and beautiful to listen.

  • Tops!

  • im 13 & im just now listening to dr. hook and the medicine shows musicand this is one of my favorite songs as of now.

  • Great song - written by a great man: Shel Silverstein.

  • I love watching this group. They were SERIOUS stoners.

  • I'm really glad I grew up with a mom and dad who got me hooked on good music. I loved this song the moment I heard it. I love someone who actually puts actual emotion in what they are singing.

  • These guys were great live, not like so many of the prepackaged bands today....

  • We have a cassette tape collection in my workshop numbering at least a couple hundred sourced from charity shops.Played this song from a Dr Hook album and the young apprentice wanted to cut his wrists.Gold!

  • a great song. love Dr Hook, underrated but so damn good

  • still sounds as goods as when i was a kid in 70's

  • Its one thing to luv Dr. Hook, its another to experience them playing LIVE!!! Thumbs up Josegeraldofonseca and thankin' ya for this AWESOME upload!! = )

  • mp3iiiiify is the best site to get this mp3. google mp3iiiiify.

  • can anybody tell me, is it true that the one with the eye patch, got life for killing their manager.????

  • @margatelad Not true. He's still playing and touring.

  • once i was listening to a reggae version of this song. anybody knows this version?

  • @Beijaflorification

Hi. There is a reggae version sung by Eric Donaldson. The album is named ``Love Of The Common People``

Hope it helps. Greetings from South Africa

  • Once I was listening to a reggae-version of ths song. Anybody knows this reggae-version??

  • this song was written by Shel Silverstein xD such an awesome song ^^

  • Just gotta talk to her!!...... Love it!! so many memories, so little time...

  • This song is excellent...whoever wrote it had their heart broken by Sylvia Avery. Wonder where she is today?

  • @lockwpa Shel ahd a 'thing' with Sylvia Pandolfi (not Avery) for a number of years. If you Google 'Sylvia Pandolfi' there's a video of 'Shel's Song' (which is actually 'Sylvia's Mother') on Mike Lynch Cartoons, which shows Louisa (mother) and Sylvia talking about the day Shel phoned, and this song. The mother looks a bit of a rough dog, in fact I think she's so ugly not even a sniper would 'take her out.'

  • what is the real name of this guy singing sylvias mother

  • @goodgamer13

    His name is Dennis Locorriere.

  • dennis lacorriere

  • So much feeling and passion...Really reaches the soul...Bravo Dennis! and the Boys.

  • I remember running away from home and some guy drives up to this building I was hiding in and this song, was blaring from his car radio system. that is why I love this song, ha ha

  • I am only 21 years old i know every word to almost every one of dr. hooks songs. i would give anything to be able to see them live. they are my favorite group. i love them.

  • Yeah same here along with a whole lot of other oldie goldies hehe.

  • @lolotriplett

You got soul baby, don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise. ;)

  • Wow! this is an oldie. 1971, 1972 or 1973?

  • Hi,I saw this band three times and there great it is a pity they broke up

  • one of my fave songs of theirs, thnx for the post

  • Shit man, I'm gonna fuckin' cry. o.o

  • Super.

  • Great fuck'n tune.. excellent post

  • In French it translates to "Sylvia's Father" Just type Sacha Distel "Le Pere de Sylvia" Clean cut French singer, probably early 80's.

  • one of the best songs ever recorded, i worked at woolworths (yes sad but true) in gloucester at the time this record came out . but what great memories it brings back, still gives me goosebumps when i hear ir

  • you guys listen to the song.....forget sylvia and sylvia's mother....kill the f*****ing operator instead, she's ripping off this poor guy. it's bad enough he's gettin dumped by his girlfriend, this operator charged him 3 times throughout the whole song. Guess they haven't invented cellphone yet when they wrote this song or it would have said something like "and my battery went low after the next 3 minutes... please, Mrs. Avery, just gotta talk to her..... :)hahaha

  • Nice*

  • k houd niet van de muziek uit ons pap zijn tijd maar dit nummer vind ik wel super ncie

  • @skullysniper

    i agree!!

  • Can you feel his sorrow, I loved this song as a kid and still do

  • @ptcpaul

Sure can ... I remember hearing this when I was about 10 and crying for the poor young man ... you can just feel his angst, his frustration at not being able to speak to her and having to find change and feed it into the phone while his life is falling apart ...

  • @ptcpaul I feel my own sorrow. Worst song ever.

  • omg i love this song xxxxxxxxxxx

  • No-one should ever do a cover of this... the version is perfection itself.

It is the recording they listen to in Paradise --

    aye, and in Purgatory.

  • The Harmony is perfect .

  • this is one of my favorite songs it reminds me of a good friend that has been missing for a few years wedont know where she is and we pray she will return home safe and sound remember sylvia we all love you and want you home

  • i will keep sylvia and all of u in my prayers. <3

  • I was raised on all kinds of music, but Dr. Hook was simply family to us. We listened All the time. They kept me company while everyone else was at work @ nite and during day. Was never scared when I had them on. Dennis is an underrated talent. Was able to see them in concert a few times, even kissed by Rick!! My 13 year old heart was happy. Most of my childhood/teen memories involve them. Thats where I first learned of Shel Silverstein too. THANKS for the memories and the love!!

  • One of my lifelong favorites. Dr. Hook was one of my favorites before I could use a fork.

  • I always heard Dr. Hook growing up...the appropriate songs lol. Every Sunday was cleaning day and my parents blasted this throughout the house. Was born in '85 btw.

  • Classic!

  • these cats had a great band damned good lyrics

  • Man I grew up in a good time

So many ongs that did seem as if were the ones they were writing about

I had several gorls in JR high & High school this song would happen about w/ her parents

  • Doctor Hook was such a great guy. I always thought he was the patch-wearing, one-eyed mookie with the crybaby gas, but he was the beardie whiner. Why don't they make "kill yourself" music like this any more?

  • captainarchernx01...They do make "kill yourself music" ..and then they OD on their crack and meth..Its a crying shame.

  • I'll bust a millon spikes &&&&&&!

  • one of my favorite songs since i was 16. kiss from croatia! :))

  • Sylvia's mother is a big buttinsky,,I bet she is'nt even giving Sylvia the message,I bet Sylvia's mother is a big, liar, liar pants on fire, and that poor sylvia is up in her room waiting for him to call,,,man,,,if I could only have been there and give these poor young lovers a cell phone, and tell them to tell Mrs Avery to butt out.

  • My dad used to dance with me to this when I was about 4.....the memories :(. Those were good times

  • this song is a flash back to my child hood my uncle and my dad loved this band. Nothing but good memories :D

  • im only 19 but i LOVE this song!!!! so many memories of my mom and i....good vid

  • Great Memory Days and Years. The 70's were the days we'd do anything to go up, down, or sideways. Still rocking with the same songs but now I've got enough brains to find a stopping place and go to bed.............the mornings are different now too. THANKS FOR A GREAT MEMORY SONG AND FUN TIME IN LIFE.
