Cymbals are used for a better playing experience. They aren't necessary. If you do add them to the RB2 drum, the original pads turn into a snare 2 toms and 1 floor toms. The you can add a hi-hat, a ride, and/or a crash.

The Roland one is mesh. Quieter, more realistic feel.
