Hi. How do you get a few channels playing in Ochestral (theres16) at the same time in one channel in Ableton live, I can only get the 1st seen it done on fl studio. bin trying 4 days, I love the sound of the program. Thx 4 your tutorial
@memorylane1980s i dont think you can. ableton live can only read from one program/bank/sub-rank per track. if you want tutti orchestral sections, take shortcuts by using instruments like the brass and string ensembles. thatll save you about 6 or 7 instrument tracks collectively
@Treijim Thx 4 your reply. I thought I couldn't find it. spent effin days on it!! Bit silly really, you would think you could add what ever and how many channels as you want and play them all together on the keyboard would be great that!.nvm back to FL!! thx again. Ian
@memorylane1980s ah, you didnt mention that you wanted to play them via a keyboard. try holding ctrl or shift and clicking the arrangement recording buttons on the far right of each track so that they become red and then playing on your keyboard.
@Treijim I mean a Midi keyboard? can we not play a just few instruments from the channels on the software(16 altogether) with a midi keyboard at the same time?. I think its something to do with the output selector but only guessing as it doesnt seem to do anything? :(
@memorylane1980s did you try what i suggested? select all the instruments you want to play with the keyboard by putting the arrangement recording button on multiple instruments and just play it from your keyboard
@Treijim PHEW!strugglin here:P where is the arrangement recording button?is it on Ableton or the software? got the output selector but no idea what that does.If I could find that then I could do as you say hold the shift and that sounds like it should do it.but theres NOTHING that says arrangement recording!I have Ableton set on all channels but the other 15 on the software arent recieving a midi signal,I use mainly session view on Ableton but have checked the arrangement view.HELP!
@memorylane1980s google 'ableton live arrangement recording' and youll find it :) it looks like a grey button with a black circle thing in it on the far right of your arrangement view. theres one for each track
@Treijim Hi, u mean the record enable button! it turns red when enabled? but that only STILL gives you a midi signal to the first channel of the software! (Flute as Default)we need midi sinals to ALL 16 on the software can that not be done?
@memorylane1980s manually create all your tracks and assign them to all 16 instruments following my advice in this tutorial. once youve replicated the 16 edirol tracks in your arrangement view, enable recording on all of the tracks by holding shift while clicking the enable record button.
@Treijim GOT IT! WOW if was hard that, it seems it needs that first Midi then the others seem to feed off that. I've had the lot playin from my keyboard at the same time!.Thx 4 your time and trouble without u I would have had NO CHANCE.Now I've gotta make some music! I've no excuse Now :P.
I will subscibe.
Have a great musical Christmas and an Orchestral New Year.
@ShrewsAde ah really? you can find the horn concerto on my channel :) the tutorial was long enough, so i didnt want to add another 10 minutes to it haha
I'm using ableton 7, and in arrangement view, I lack the section of the midi track where you select the output all of the way towards the right of the screen. I have no idea where to go from there.
@popejagged hi. the feature youre looking for is "output type" which is set to your vst instrument track, and "output channel" which is set to the instrument within the vst. try looking for those terms in the ableton 7 manual. thats all i can think of to help. let me know how that works out
@Treijim I'm very new to ableton, coming from FL studio if that explains my disposition in learning this interface at all.... Long story short, I couldn't find quite what I think I was looking for in the manual. Some of those features didn't turn up anything, and others turned up related things, but they sounded irrelevant in context. I'm really not sure lol
Hey mate, instead of creating a new midi track for every instrument/sound I just drop the vst file in a drum rack each time I need a new sound from the orchestra.
This way all your channels aren't taking up your screen! Just a helpful tip.
You are clear :-). Now i know as work Edirol with Ableton and as work the bank, sub-bank, midi channel and others. That's enough, i think at least for now. Thank you so much! :-).
P.S: my string quintet is uncomplete yet, it takes a bit :-). I'm composing it with Notion Music, do you know?
Thanks for posting this. I was very confused about how to use Orchestral properly, and this set me straight.

@PhokusOner im not quite sure what you mean. you create a new instance of edirol for every instrument sound?
Treijim 4 months ago
@Treijim from what i can see it looks like your midi channels aren't grouped, it just helps when there grouped together.
PhokusOner 4 months ago
@PhokusOner that version of live doesnt support grouping channels :)
Treijim 4 months ago
@Treijim oh really, that's unlucky. I use Live 8 it pretty much looks the same
