WOW I use to have this VHS but it was a few different sports. It had a Skateboarding section, snowboarding, freestyle and something else. What was the name of this tape?
holy crap was this filmed in jacksonville, IL?it looks like the old schwinn bicycle shop in south jacksonville... it was opened back in the 60s so this might be it
yes, man, indeed they are, still, then,as now,and as in everything,it usually comes down to who you know and how you sell yourself.that is why mid 90's bmx is so interesting,as there was little fanfare, and a lot of riding going on.thanks for your comment.
man,vander...funny dude...the song was titled body electric, and was performed by Michael sembello of flashdance fame.I had this tape and read the sleeve about 1000 times, that's how come I remember, jumpin jack was rad indeed...if these guys were b-list,they were giving the A-list a run of for their money...
@jrpolanco Don't get me wrong on my comment about being B riders. I only mean that in the sense that i didn't see them get much play in the rags from their sponsors, as compared to riders like Eddie Fiola, and Mike Dominguez. The riders here do give it their "A" ride. After all, they are doing shows. Thanks for your post.
The good old days - when they made real BMX bikes. Not like the crap they make now. My 78 Mongoose motomag beats the sh*t out of all my friends bikes. BRING BACK THE REAL BIKES AND PARTS!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHA, if they did that part where they landed on the roof & road on the roof of the house at my house they both would've gone right through the fucking roof.....
That's not *That* Old School....I'd say like 1985 or 1986...& the Movie BMX Bandits w/ Nicole Kidman in it came out in like 1982 I think.... & Rad came out in 1986....
so true. there is no flair anymore. its all about getting as many tricks in as possible instead of taking a few out of a run and making them look really clean. . also to jbones...MAGS are the Sh1t
It was most likely just a coaster, which was normal to use then. There was something called a freecoaster then too, it was a freewheel that attached to a coaster brake, and what we call a freecoaster now was called the RL hub in the late 80's, rare! You could have made a freecoaster then but most freestylers didn't, they wanted the brake for tricks.
i have a 79 GT 4130 cromoly fly. its just like this with 3/8 dropouts. its totally bad ass. but the new school bmx dosent have the talent that this did
OMG, this is insane, I actually still on this video on VHS.BMX has come a looooongway, unreal. The flatland they do now blows away these guys, nevertheless, these old skhool kats paved the way, much respect!
this is more inspiring that watching modern bmx videos, and everyone was so much nicer about it then instead of all the kid haters of today (giving bmx a bad name), i might have to get some mags, pegs and put my seat really high now =]
I love this video, so i rode my 1988 bmx out of the back of a transit van today :D and i painted that bike the same colour as the bike in the video "old school bmx"
How come the B-List riders looks more talented and inovative than the A-List riders? It seems that using riders with 80% talent and 20% image is not as good as using riders with 60% talent and 40% image. Or.. maybe it's not as profitable. ;) "It's kinda silly if you ask me, but what the heck".
Lovin' the barhops - still a totally cool lookin' trick! And Bob Haro with the BEST 540 rollbacks. And Vanderspek and Hugo Gonzales and the rest of the Skyway team jumpin' in to the lake!
The centipede on 0:43 and 0:47. Chopping up lines of coke on 0:53. I don't even think there are words to describe the move at 1:30! Does anyone know where I can download the mp3 of the Kenny Loggins music in the background? Hehehe..
By the time I was tall enough to do a full Miami-hopper on a twenty-inch, they were no longer cool. I still did them though. I will forever think the cherrypicker one of the coolest flatland tricks in history. Nice vid!
Wonder where these guys are now; how do they look like now and if they still can do this. For example, Jeff Kosmala; a legend from the late 70's and early 80's is fat like a bull. He's a Honda car salesman in Vegas.
Gotta laugh at the comments about the clothes and hair..like the shit guys wear today is gonna look cool in 20 years haha. It will look just as funny then as the 80s stuff does now.Pretty cool vid.
They have a style I haven't seen in modern day BMX and did anyone notice how different their fakies are executed then the fakies of today ? or is it just me ? This is some crazy stuff
I'm thinking 83-84? Damn those were the real fun days not anything like what todays kids grow up with, and all those bike were being Made in the USA then not now, hence why you can buy a trick bike for just over $100.00 @ wallmart, I personally rode Mongoose but now it's china crap.
Wow this is pretty cool. I remember almost castrating myself learning how to do the oh-so-cool cherrypicker. And that other endo where you turn the bars 90 degrees and plant on the ground. Yeah, my stones took a few shots learning that one too. Cool video.. I am soooo old. : (
Ahh yes, the bar endo. Started out as the "Miami Hopper," where the bars never hit the ground. Themn you got the bar endo, where you balanced up on the bars. We also had "Hop Hops," where you did front wheel hops with the bars turned. But only with Tuff Wheels, unless you liked riding tacos.
This video is not too bad. I remeber having it on VHS way back in the day. I stumbled onto this part of it, does anyone know where i can find the rest. There is an old school snowboarding and skate boarding part too.
Hey! allothernamesbutthis, Andy Ruffell has a web site and he's not doing bad.He always was a go-getter. And as for the kids who take the piss out of us old schoolers, just think, in 20 years time if they try to do the modern stuff like a 360 no handed back flip! bits are gonna be falling off them! Then again you will probably be able to buy a new hip in the local drug store by then.
i had this video!! i had a schwinn predator, a gt pro performer and a redline rl22. we stole bikes from kids in oakland and then traded parts back home in suisun city!! hahah sorry kids, we were poor!!!
back then everything was new and really expensive, now you can get a fully decked out freestyle bike at walmart for 200 bucks and its just as good if not better.
RAD! man RAD! Cherry pickers...thankyou. If the young kids think it's gay to wear fullface hats doing flatland...they'll think we were all bumming each other after seeing those five lads on the one bike.
owned a team murray in the early 80s which rocked then moved onto a mongoose supergoos3 which was sound, now 37 just bought a mirraco blend2.Although the tricks in the 80s look tame compared to what the lads pull of now bmx still fucking rocked back then except the permed hair god the fashion was crap.
Even if you go to walmart and buy a bmx bike its still not one of the classics. Will never be the same. See these bikes for sale in flea markets sometimes and buy them right away. Onetime got a nice original Hutch for ten bucks can you believe.
You'd think so, huh? There's an old saying: "Light. Strong. Cheap. Pick any two." Add the level of performance you're looking for and you're looking and some bucks.
I have a Haro F1. But it feels heavy as hell to me though. But it is super strong (I crashed a lot) and it was cheap. So I guess I went strong and cheap.
I should really start riding again though. I wiped out hard a few years back and popped my shoulder out. My bike's been sitting out in the rain for some time now as a result.
Ahh, back in the good old days of the 80s. It was all so cool and new then. This brings back memories of bike magazines and dreaming of owning GT Haro Dyno and all that crap I can't remember. Damn those things were expensive. The little shit disturbers saying it "sucks ass" are obviously to young and too stupid to know what they're talking about
god, thats back when we did hopping tricks, then came rolling tricks. it was so expensive to have a good freestyle bike because everything was new. now you go to walmart and get an awesome bike with everything on it for under 200 bucks.
Scuffing tricks came between the hopping and rolling. Actually, scuffing tricks made the transition from balance tricks to rolling. First, we figured out how to get into weird positions on the bike without moving, then started pushing the tires with our feet to add movement, then realized it was smoother to just pop into the move while rolling.
class of the 8o's did anybody spot bob haro in there!founder of freestyle....top bloke...andy ruffel was my hero back then 'i was made up when i got his autogragh...where is he now?..i was mad on bmx then ''when bmx was bmx..just..brill anyone remmember pk'ripper ..curtis..torka 380..that was the bikes i had back then.....
Damn what a mess!

Imagine how much those bikes would be worth now. Remember when bmx went out of fashion in the early 90's and all the parks closed? Shame man.

blargh2blargh 4 years ago
That's because they helped invent the basics. If it weren't for these riders and others, you wouldn't know where to start.
