  • 114 years ago..wow! This before Coca-Cola created Santa Claus!

  • They had Santa Claus back in 1898?

    I am shocked!

  • @epiksonik Even that many is a surprise to me! That is OLD! Sad to think there will be no one from the 1800's before much longer. When I was young, it was common to know people who had been alive during the Civil War and Lincoln's presidency. I'm dating myself. Old age is something to be proud of, not kept secret! Women of the world, are you listening?!? :-)

  • @epiksonik

    32?! I thot there would like 4 or 5.

  • 113 years ago lol wow..

  • Damn Santa dropped the little boy's soldier out of his stocking. No standards.

  • Wonderful! Happy Christmas - look forward to coming to the NFT soon again!

  • This was actually pretty cool to watch

  • Wow, 113 years ago! It's so weird :L

  • Everybody in this film is dead already . Kinda depressing.

  • @godstomper Not Santa

  • you will see right now an 111(to be exact right now) year old video of christmas!!

  • 0:24 Real cutting edge special effects technology for its day!

  • LOL At 1:00 he dropped the toy and never bothered to pick it up.

  • This is truly a "Old Fashioned Christmas"!!! Great work for its age.

  • This film made in the 1890s has way better quality than some of the videos on Youtube that have been recorded with a calculator or a potato made in 2011...

  • Vounter Sloush xD

  • If i'm correct, this is Brett Farves Freshman year, right?

  • did the movies not have sound?

  • @7913Daniel 1898... its the beginning of cinema. they didnt have sound until around 1930.

  • @7913Daniel No, sound film was not invented until 1926.

  • @7913Daniel no. Sound didn't come in til much later

  • this is better quality than the Alice In wonderland film (1903) even though this is at least 5 years older :l

Note: EVERYONE IN THESE FILMS ARE DEAD >:D

i cant imagine what it would be like watching these when they were brand new! :3

  • @foxgirl47 the alice in wonderland film.... wel... it wasnt destroyed... but most of it was, thats y its got such poor quality.

  • 1:02 the falling toy; the first blooper in history

  • i wonder who the little girls were and what they went on to do with their lives

  • they forgot light up at the morning :))) but very good for 1898...

  • i liked the little girls bare feet.....

  • poor santa clauss

  • He's gained weight over the years.

  • Gosh, I can´t watch this without 3D glasses

  • Those kids are dead now.

  • @ryanmshepard92 No they're not. One of them has Facebook.

  • nice, they used adobe after effects in 1898.

  • how many of you relise that thear was some poor guy that had to spend weeks just to layer the video alone let alone all the other things films had to do

  • would have been green too

  • its funny how i dont know to do that effect in 2011

  • lol when did santa let himself go

  • i like the santa back then is more gangsta LOL santa is gangsta

  • And I thought Avatar had good effects.

  • I love the song.

  • Imagine trying to explain the movie "Tron" to these people.

  • Comment removed

  • if i had a time machine i would go back to every time era and make vintage porn in HD

  • It's kinda funny how that's actually what they wore those days..

  • looool he missed the stockings at 1:00 but its amazing tht this is from 1898

  • @exposed97 Yeah before they tie you up and call you a sorcerer

  • imagine if you could somehow show a 1898 audience that scene from "2012" where the entire city of Los Angeles blows up. I wonder if it would like literally scare the shit out of them?

  • @pnroyal LOL everyone would run for their lives

  • A film from the 19th century? No way!

  • This has better effects than some movies NOW.

  • this must of been a big hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh my god... The pictures are moving!

  • It is wild, to be able to see people who lived over a 100 years ago, moving around on film !

  • @56bluegold

A virtual time machine! With all of the technology available, this still fascinates me today

  • 1898?! impossible!!!

  • santa looks a bit underwent if im honest?? i hope he's eating better these days 113 years later!!

  • Nice to see in this film the old, elegant version of Father Christmas, who was not the "fat, jolly elf" with red coat envisioned by the Coca Cola company. The coat Santa wears here would probably have been blue.

  • they are dead

  • this is so old wtf , am soo scared why people grow mustache then and why they dont cut it and how old they r in dey grave

  • @Kihoods Are you alright ?

  • Looks like it had been filmed outside as I could see their shadows on the ground.

  • Oldest person currently alive by the time this comment is posted is Eunice Sanborn (born July of 1896). People here are 0% still living.

  • @CorrectSuspicion yep, she just died on January 31, 2011. That's totally amazing!

  • @CoolT1000 Amazing because the woman died at a very old age?

  • @CorrectSuspicion yea, cuz she lived thru the whole 20th century. I know she seen a lot.

  • @CoolT1000 also lived in 3 centuries

  • I'd do the maid. If I lived in 1898 that is.

  • someone must have had his experimentation head on at the time to mix film, blimey, dont see that very much

  • lol at 1:00 a present falls out of a stocking!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There's something slightly disturbing about this....

  • @75VWhippy

The fact that Santa looks like a murder?

  • WOW ! Thanks for this and Merry Christmas

  • Superbe, Merci and Merry Christmas

  • best special effects ever!!!!!

  • lol one of the presents in the stockings fell out

  • Great movie great effects. They had all the tricks then,we have just made them more sophisticated.

    bernie

  • This has pretty darn good effects for 1898.

  • @Linkage1992 This was way before the Wizard of Oz!

  • I mean, this is 1898. Do you know how long ago that was. This was during an era where people hardly had electricity at all, and they didn't have high standards for labor and the manufacturing of several products. As for the comments on here, I have an iPod touch for myself, yet this has to be the first film in existence to feature Santa Claus, paving the way for other Santa Claus films like Miracle on 34th Street, Rudolph, Frosty, and 2003's Elf.

  • Those kids are dead by now

  • One thing is sure if they had been bad,Santa has a tree full of switches just waiting to tan a hide or two....lol

  • Dear santa .. Can give me the new AXE 1900 GT ?

  • A fun little silent that I'd never even knew existed ...

  • this is incredible to watch ! to think it was made in 1898!

    back to simpler happier times.

  • @ZandriaClark

simpler yes, happier to some extent yes , but not really

  • Ok.. that Nanny its CREEPY, she looks like a.. gost?

  • Santa Claus looks more like the grim reaper.

  • Now that is pretty gosh dang cool.

  • Comment removed

  • i love watching silent films, let alone ones from the 1800s

  • AMAZING...JUST AMAZING! THEY KEPT CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS. HAPPY HOLIDAYS MEANS HAPPY HOLY DAYS!

  • @sg1shova XDDD yes

  • One is candy it fell down XDDD

  • es real

  • SANTA CLAUS SI EXISTEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

  • Ay, Santa. Can you give some of my niggas back in Africa some food, please?

  • F*cking creepy as hell... but superb!!!!

  • this was the AVATAR of it's day probably

  • Why do kids deserve to have everything they want, when kids that are sleeping out side in the cold dont get nothing? Screw ipods this year send that money to a charity i dont need it. THis is amazing footage! so all these years of cookies and milk Santa did indeed get fat, he was skinny at one point ^^^

  • @LoveAj03: Yeah, I understand, and I'd be happy to give to charity whenever possible...........but it doesn't mean kids can't get what they want as long as their parents can afford it and if they've been good{according to reasonable standards.} ;-)

  • @MiracleMile90 Thanks for agreeing with me and i agree with you except when you said that kids do have to get something, if theyve been good. It shouldnt have ever been about gifts. WHY DO SHOULD WE HAVE GIFTS AND CRAP ON JESUS' BIRTHDAY? CHRISTMAS IS INDEED JESUS' BIRTHDAY NOT JUST A HOLIDAY, WHO CAME UP WITH HUNTING FREAKIN EGGS ON THE JESUS ROSE FROM THE GRAVE??? NOTHING MAKES SENCE ANYMORE, THE WORLD IS WRONG IN EVERY SINGLE WAY IN EVERY CATEGORY.

  • @LoveAj03 Because Jesus wasn't born on Dec. 25th, most likely he was born in August if you research your Bible you would know that.. Also our idea of Christmas is totaly pagan that early Christians turned into a holy day. Before you get mad and jump down my throat, I am a Christian. Also Happy Holidays means Happy Holy Days. So wish your fellow man good will and good cheer these Holydays. Stop spouting hate and open your eyes to your lies.

  • @boyscoutmomx5 you need to get your story straight, and i didnt mean to sound like i was jumping down your throat.

  • @boyscoutmomx5 Wait i never said anything to you,

  • @boyscoutmomx5 if you knew anything about astrology you'd see that all the statues an pics show him with a saggiturius/capricorn cusp'ed jaw!! artists where very good back then so your august theory sucks ass

  • @boyscoutmomx5 Dec.25 was chosen to be a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus to stop the worshiping of the pagan Sun God. It worked. Holidays (most started in Europe) had to blend in with old Europes celebrations to convert Europeans to Christianity. It worked. These holidays are good because it helped Christianity to grow. I don't think God sees anything wrong with it but I can't speak for God and nobody else can. It's sad we stopped with the Jewish holidays that Jesus celebrated. We need both

  • @bradley95257 Well said.

  • Aww. This movie is cute :D

  • Santa needs to refine his stocking stuffing routine.

  • @mkl62 Maybe you should try picking up a history book. Santa Claus (santa = saint in spanish) is a converted name for Saint Nicholas.

The historical Saint Nikolaos is remembered and revered among Catholic and Orthodox Christians. He is also honored by various Anglican and Lutheran churches. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, and children, and students

  • @aurorajasmine I know that Santa Claus had his origins with St. Nicholas, but you can't deny what he has become. Santa Claus has become a cash cow. I feel that people have forgotten what St. Nicholas stood for.

  • @mkl62 A lie?! First of all Santa Claus is real, I saw him when I was four years old. And before you get all huffy, read " 'Twas the Night before Christmas".

  • @13Voorheespt2 Oh, I know the story real well, and the song. But Christmas is so commercialized now that it's pitiful. Charlie Brown said it in 1965. That has been 45 years. Like Ebeneezer Scrooge, we have labored on it since. And don't get me started on that sex god who we "Christians" call the Easter Bunny.

  • @mkl62 Sex God?! lolololololol you have definitely made my day.

  • @13Voorheespt2 Well, what are rabbits good at?

  • @mkl62: Not to sound anti-Semitic or anything, but are you one of those 'Jewish Christians'?

  • america is known for disposing its past. money matters more than culture or history. when they are at odds, money usually wins out, whether it's entertainment, classic architecture or anything else.

  • am 'e same. it's a heep o' nonesense. 'too old' there isn't such a thing as too old.

    they were amazing people.

1898 must've bin some year. this came out & some others. amazing footage. J'aime.

  • creepy

  • lol the kids were really cute :-)

does this make me a pedbear?O_O

    1993-1892....uhm...

  • even the small youthful looking children are dead. it is strange to see them so young knowing that they have had their life

  • i wish i was born earlier so i could talk to people who lived through this era. i would love to speak to people who were growing up in the victorian age and could talk to me about the american civil war, general custers last stand, jack the ripper etc, all we have today is old newspaper clippings and rare gems like these videos.

  • @hargohargo There still are a few people that grew up during the Victorian Age.

  • @UNCfan102 very few if any considering the victorian age ended in 1901, there are a few from the edwardian age around the time of the titanic disaster but i think they are few also. last week in ireland a woman who was born in 1904 celebrated her 106th birthday. she is irelands oldest person and she is still capable of getting aaround she also reads two books every week.

  • There are a few but very few as you said. An American named Walter Breuning was born in 1896.

  • I'm guessing what they did was shine a projector or somin with a background of a bedroom then when the maid switches the light off a curtin appears.

i'm guessing what happens next is they play pre recorded footage of santa through a projector then turn it off and santa appears from behind the curtain.

then at the end he does a sort of magiic trick thingy and they stop the film get him out of the picture start the camera again then overlay the footage however they edited it in those days.

  • @chucklevisionman If you notice..after the maid turns off the light...there is a pause...slight..but its there..this is where the set was changed over.

  • Ha LOL the gift dropped out of the stocking

  • candy deliver in stocking fail

  • And I still don't know how they do that special effects stuff.

Amazing they could do this and amazing what they do today

  • I find these old silent films fascinating and I'm in my mid 30's! That you for downloading all these treasures!

  • didnt anyone notice the gift falling out of the second stocking? kinda funny.

  • nowadays those kids at the end would be thinking...

"Come back here you Chepskate! I want more than just this doll!!"

  • If only it was uploaded in HD ._.

  • cool! wonder how they did that without computers.

  • Was this the first use of picture-in-picture?

  • Children didn't get much for Christmas then, a toy, some candy, an orange but they were happy to get it. My Grandpa was born in 1903, he told me he got a wooden toy and some fruit and some candy. They were considered an adult in a little body then, my Grandfather was put to work in a factory at age 8. He couldn't even read or write, but he did know about adding. I bet he only made a dime a week.

  • @Sheri451 That's pretty sad, well mines had to work at a young age as well.

  • @Sheri451: Poor Grandpa, having to work at his age,

and with only a dime a week :-(. That was one of the really sad things of the era, was that robber barons were able to exploit youngsters like that.............thankfully things have improved since then. ;-)

  • how on earth did they do that without any of the CGI computer whoohar?

    amazing bit of film

  • I love it! gives me a good view of the old days! I love history in films, something about it is just so magical

  • An entertaining trick film. Even for today. It did not lose my interest at all.

  • Im not gonna say this is a masterpiece, but still very interesting, cinema today would be completely different or might not even exist at all if films like this hadn't been created

  • It's sad that, these days, kids would be sorely disappointed to receive only a couple items in a stocking.

  • @Riflemanm16a2: Perhaps some, yes. But let's not kid ourselves............

In fact, I didn't receive much for Christmas a couple years back, but I didn't complain. ;-)

  • at 1:02 one of the dolls fell...

  • YES!!! i knew all along he was real! in your face liberal media!

  • wow, this is amazing footage, 1898, wow!!

  • Imagine people's reactions seeing this in 1898?

  • Thank you very much for this video.

  • Back to a simpler time... I betcha neither one of those kids got an Ipod touch that year.

  • @frednora na they probably just had nice coal stockings waiting for them:)

  • @frednora you think?

  • Adorable!!!! Can you imagine how amazed people of the time must've been to watch something "new" like this?

  • how did they have that speacial effect

  • Did you ever notice that if you rearrange the letters of "Santa" you can spell "satan"? Actually, you need only move the letter N from the middle to the end.

    Coincidence? Yeah, probably.

  • Santa Claus is still alive. I just saw him at the mall.

  • I agree, but that film's title is "A Trip to the Moon".

  • Is that your age or your IQ? I'd guess the latter.

  • Wow! You're very perceptive!

  • Santa wasn't obese like now... probably because back then everyone was starving to death and now the live off Kraft and Beefaroni

  • @Botany101 : look up santa claus and coca cola.

  • there was coca cola in 1898

  • @TheRussellicious : coca cola came up with the santa claus that we all know today. the fat and jolly thing. did you even look it up?

    ;

  • of course there wasn't santa claus in coca cola back then

  • @TheRussellicious LOL now we just a polar bear

  • hehee i love this :D

  • As much as things change over the centuries, what really amazes me is how much things stay the same. Christmas and film are truly beautiful things!

  • this dead silence is so scary

  • @TheRussellicious

Santa was probably green and white in that movie.

  • i think its shopped

  • 1:00 the toy or candy that he put in the 2nd stocking fell out lol and he was like.. fk it

  • lol everybody who was in this video is dead

even kids is 200 years old now

  • did you see that a peace of candy fell out of one of the stockings?

  • Was this the first christmas movie?
