The distinction people fail to make here is between skill and greatness. Without a doubt there were more skillful players than Gretz in many aspects of the game. Lemieux was a better pure scorer, Orr was a better skater etc. But no one comes close to touching his greatness. He was easily the most complete player, he saw the ice the best and in the end the numbers do the talking.
You can argue that without injuries some of the greats could match him, but they didn't and thats what counts.
Gretzky was easily one of the greatest athletes of all-time, however, all the factors went in his favor (era, team, health). Gordie Howe played his best years before the 80 game schedule was adopted and you could win the scoring title with about 75 pts. That's why he got his one and only 100 pt season (103) at age 40. Did you know Gretzky got his last 100 pt season at age 35 and by 38 he was retired? There's a reason many will argue that Orr, Howe or possibly Lemieux may have been better.
what r u a kid. you don't know that 12 players from the edmonton dynasty went to n.y.? there were 8 great oilers on the 1994 rangers team. that's how n.y. won the cup.
the rangers couldn't win the cup through their system so they got 8 members of the 5 time champion oilers and 8 members from the 1992 hawks cup finals team to do it for them. the rangers did have 2 rangers on their team (leetch and richter) along with 4 russians and some crap players. in 1994 the rangers GM Neil Smith said "I'll kiss Edmontons GM Glenn Sathers ass in Macys window if we win the cup this year". Even the rangers GM admits the Oilers won the cup for them. check my vids for it.
my video is called 1994 New York Rangers. the 8 oilers that won the cup for the rangers in 1994 were Colin Campbell - Messier - Graves - Beukaboom - MacTavish - Anderson - Lowe - Tikeneen. the rangers only retired two ranger players from the 1994 team because that's all there was. the rest were oilers and hawks. 1994 LETS GO OILERS!
he is the best i wish he was still playing the way he did and was still in the nhl so i could see his skills in real life he is my idol,Gretzky for life
lol, a no-hit rule, very nice, no one wanted to hit him because then he would have to deal the line Gretzky was on, no matter what team he played for, and you put lemieux at the top, lemieux played in the same era as gretzky, and did you not see the way gretzky could put the puck in the net againt Roy, brodeur the best goalies of all-time.
Coffey over took him in points, Potvin was a better all round D and the old timers would say Horton was the best defender in a pinch. So Orr's longevity of greatness is not to the same level as #99's. Orr holds 1 record (and it is awesome) but G holds 60 many of which will not be overtaken in our life times. Orr was awesome!!!!!!!! but doesn't warrent retiring #4 league-wide
There were only 6 teams when Howe played but still. If the 120 best hockey players are playing in the same league, is there any room for weaklings and mediocre players? Not even close. So with that, perhaps it was the toughest to stay on top during that year and Howe always stayed on top or near the top for 20 or so years. He finished in the top 10 every year from 1949 thru 1970. He was tougher than any of the top 3 players of all time. Why isnt he mentionned more often as possibly the greatest?
I agree. Howe had the skill, power, longevity and heart that not many players have. That being said, I think it's ridiculous to say Gretzky wasn't the "best" of all time. He brought a league from obscurity into markets never ever fathomed by owners and investors in the NHL. Whether that is a good thing is debatable, but he made hockey into a legit sport, at least for 20 years. Too bad it is now relegated to "regional" sport status and most southern teams will probably fold in the next few years.
he is mentioned as one of the greatest players of all time, he might of been if he stayed out of the box, come on, he has his own hat-trick, the goal, the assist and the fight. No one in the past, present or future could do what gretzky did. Though with that being, not to many could be the all around player like Howe, the top points and the PIM he took, not as shabby.
he is # 3 in the history of hockey. That is nothing to scoff at. He was the complete forward, but that does not equate to the greatest. Complete and greatest are not the same.
There were only six teams then, but the population was also much lower and the talent was drawn only from Canada. So, I think the pre- and post-expansion talent difference is puffed. Howe's achievements were remarkable, but I never saw him do what Gretzky could. When Gretzky played, it looked like everybody else on the ice was much slower. But he wasn't really faster, it was that everybody else could only respond to him.
Howe was widely thought to be the best of all time before Gretzky came along (at least among forwards). But since Gretzky really demolished every record ever, there are few logical arguements for Howe over Gretzky. Howe played even longer, and was incredibly consistant, but never really reached the same heights as Gretzky did during his prime (200+ seasons, winning scoring races by nearly 80 pts, etc). Besides, Gretzky has more assists than anyone else has points, even Howe.
Ah, the debate goes on about the greatest hockey player of all time. I think we can all agree that the top 3 absolutely includes Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux in no particular order. How about Gordie Howe as a definite #4 and Maurice Richard as #5. I know its almost impossible to compare eras, but ask yourself this: can a player be as great as perhaps Gordie Howe? He was the fiercest player ever known. And he was almost always a top 4 or 5 point scorer and won his last Art Ross when he was 35.
botch061502: Gretzky also accomplished more with less. Gretzky was 6'0" and 170 pounds soaking wet. Lemieux about 6'4" and 220 pounds. To go a full 80 game season without missing a beat for 8 or 9 years and to stay healthy was awesome. Yes he had Semenko and others protecting him, but Im just saying that with his size it was easy to knock him down and hurt him. He was frail looking in the dressing room. His shoulder bones clearly showing. He didnt have much muscle but he was extremely fit.
shouldnt there be better highlights of him apart from empty net goals? and it seemed to me that the passes his teammates gave him looked better than most of his goals..
also, The Oilers won a cup less than two years after Gretzky was traded. whats that say about the caliber of teammates? maybe they wouldnt ve won as many without Gretzky, but they still had the ability to win without him.Health issues also played a big part. Gretzky was always healthy. Lemieux was putting up stellar numbers with cancer, and his back had gotten so bad it got to the point where his trainer was lacing his skates for him, yet his numbers were unaffected. #66>#99
Lemieux hands down. Gretzky had the better career but Lemieux was the greater player. Look at the era in which Gretzky played in. when he was getting 200pt seasons.teams wore long pants, defensemen could barely skate, goaltenders looked like Mr. Salty in net, and the butterfly style didn't even exist. It was ridiculously easy to score goals. also look at his supporting cast. The caliber of teammates around Gretzky was amazing.Lemieux had crap for the most part and still managed to win.
Joe Mullen, Kevin Stevens, Tom Barasso, Jagr, Zalapski, Paul Coffey John Cullen, Rob Brown, Recchi, Trotier, Kovalev, Zubov, Lang, Hatcher.. were not chumps. I'd say Pitts had a pretty stacked team.
Also, Billy Smith, Hexstall, ROY, Fuhr, Moog all played in the 80s and kicked ass. No Mr. Salties there. G's records: NHL, international, and junior = the best!
Agreed. But that's not saying much. He should move up to the head office and make a serious pitch for Burke. He'd turn things around, that is, if someone hasn't hired him already.
The best hitters in the game have admitted that they have tried to hit him but he is always 3 steps ahead of the play. Fine, your opinion on Bobby Orr is your opinion, but if you think Gretzky's accomplishments were from any source aside from his natural talent than you know nothing about hockey.
Also, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr consider Gretzky the greatest of all time - apparently you know more about hockey than those two.
Evidence of Lemieux being the top's? writers, journalists, and broadcasters (Don Cherry, John Davidson, Milt Dunnell, Stan Fischler, Dick Irvin, Brian McFarlane, Bob McKenzie, Jim Matheson, Harry Neale, Frank Orr), as well as coaches, referees, general managers, and former players (Al Arbour, Scotty Bowman, Emile Francis, Howie Meeker, Scotty Morrison, Roger Neilson, Bud Poile, Sam Pollock, Marcel Pronovost, Billy Reay, Glen Sather, Harry Sinden, Red Storey). Put #66 as 4th. & #99 as 1st
Orr was spectacular. There's no denying he revolutionized the sport. But his statistics, while incredible, are meaningless when compared to stats from this era. A wrist shot from the blue line was a legit scoring chance back then. Personally, I'd rank them Lemieux, Orr, and then Gretzky. Because as great as Orr was, Lemieux would take him for a ride on his way to the net. He was oo big, too strong, too fast.
I guess that is why Sports Illustrated voted Gretz athlete of the DECADE and not Jordon, not Marrino, and not ORR......b/c they felt sorry for the kid/ child.
Perhaps it would have been classier for #99 to say to reporters, "I'm the greatest now and of all time". Save that for the American athletes/sports. I'm sure after the late-80s Orr would have bowed his head and said the same comment you quoted from 84. Anyways, 60 records- many not to beat in your or my life time-enough said
@dantastic76 I'm with you on this one...but if you want to say Mario, Bobby and Gordie are better...you can always make an arguement for them. But I will say this: nobody I've ever seen, and I've seen tones of classic hockey games, ever made his teamates better than Gretzky! And without question, he's the smartest hockey player, EVER!
does anyone know if there is a video on here of when the oilers won the cup and wayne was being interviewed and they dumped the champagne on his head? or the interview after he found out he was being traded to LA? i cant find either on here
last i checked there was no place on any stats sheets for projected points or goals...nor handicaps for which teams and eras are played. stats are stats....and greatness is measured by what happened not what could've happened. you can argue who has a more impressive stat(s) or record(s), but it's pointless and groundless to argue someone is a greater player for what they could've accomplished if they never, in fact, did accomplish it.
The thing is, people say Gretzky and Lemieux played in a watered down league in the 80s. False. They didn't. Lemieux played in the toughest division of all time (the 80's Patrick Division). Those Flyers, Capitals, and Devils were tough as hell and could beat almost any team outside their own division on a given night. Lemieux played 35 of 80 games against brutal opponents and yet he did as well if not better than Gretzky from 1985-86 through 1991-92. The Smythe (Gretzky's) was a poorer division.
no it is'nt. When there are such evidences as these mentioned below, you can't deny that Lemieux was a much better overall player. Gretzky was a little diva whom no one ever dared touch. I remember seeing lindros refrained from bodychecking because he had noticed it was Gretzky
I could have scored on the two set ups Gretzky gave that punk Lindros in the Canada up. Gretzky was better than Lemieux defensively. He did not body check much due to his size, but try getting by him when he was fore checking (he could hem you in or intercept a puck/best read ever), he could also back check, break up a 3 on 1 and skate the other way.
Who would you pick between Gretzky and Lemieux to play along with a bunch of no names? Gretzky better defensively, maybe. Lemieux had the size, the power, and the reach to make other players look like pee-wees. He was a player of another league. 69 goals in 60 games with a cancer through that in 1993. It says it all.
See, in Gretzky's best years with the Oilers, there was no expansion. There was 4 teams added in 79 (Oilers included) and then no expansion until 1991. The bad teams in the 80's were simply not as bad the bad ones of the 70's. Please folks, look at the stats of those old Capitals and Seals. Both garbage teams. Anyway, the point Im making is that you can compare Orr to other players of his era but not to Gretzky and Lemieux. Its that simple.
Debating whos the best hockey player ever is totally subjective. You can't compare eras, its that simple. Bobby Orr played in several expansion eras (1967-68, 1970-71, 1972-73 and 1974-75. 6 teams were added in 67, 2 in 70, 2 in 72 and finally 2 in 74. Anyone who thinks a great performance against a bad team (expansion team) is worth merit, that person doesnt understand what true greatness is. I would like to see Bobby Orr's stats against GOOD teams alone compared to Gretzky and Lemieux.
GREAT HOCKEY VIDEO!! To see 2 other great hockey videos, just click on my name. The new one is for my upcoming hockey book which will be released in October and has the Foreword written by Keith Primeau!
The only reason Gretzky had all those points in those record breaking seasons was because he was on the best team in the NHL and was playing with the best players in the league like Kurri and Messier. Right???? Wrong! Well take the 81-82 season for example, possibly the greatest season by individual athlete in the history of professional sports. Gretzky scored 92 goals and 212 points. Not to take anything away from Mess and Kurri, but they each ended up with 88 and 86 points. Enough said.
He was a great play-maker and with that bunch of superstar playing alongside him He could rack up that many of point. He would have never ever done that with the pens of Lemieux's time in the 80 's
Gretzky was the best because he made the players around him better. He was able to bring out the natural high talent of players like Kurri etc. Kurri would have never scored 71 goals playing for another team. Even at age 35 Gretzky still scored over 100 points.
What I find most amazing about this video archive is Gretzky at 5 had kept many little skating and shooting tendencies through all those years. The shoulder dip, weight on the front foot shifting.....same skating stride. Maybe it's true---those first years are the most important. All these nutty debates must end. The player with the best + / - numbers is simply the best player ever. This takes nothing away from superb talents like Gretzky and Lemieux. Orr was most dominant. Period.
I like to make the arguement as well that Lemieux might have been better without the injuries, but deep down inside I can say Gretzky was the best ever. He has 1,000 more pints then Messier come on that's pretty sick!!!!
Mario injuries and sickness were not late in his career, if so I would never make hypothetical points.
Most of his games missed were in his prime, so if we go by what his averages were in the games he missed it would be greater for his totals than just his overall averages.
Lemieux misssed 513 games and played 572 less than Gretzky.
Based on averages Mario scores 182 more goals than Wayne in when you add the 513 games and 227 more goals than Wayne if he had played as many total games.
Then consider that Wayne played with great teams initially and Mario was with the worst.
According to Doctors Mario, due to his back, was at NO time in his carrer better than 80%.
paul Coffey who won cups with Wayne and mario said that Lemeiux was the best he had ever played with and Bobby Orr said that Lemieux was the best he had ever seen.
So why were these guys the best team in the NHL? Gretzky scored 212 points and the next highest on the team was 88 points. I think the Great One might of had something to do with being the best team in the NHL.
jrpeters5: youre very right. Ovechkin Crosby Malkin and any other superstar in the NHL today are not even close to what Gretzky was in his heyday. In any given season between 1981-82 and 1986-87, Gretzky had about 65 to 75 points more than anyone else. By what margin did Ovechkin beat out his closest foe this past year? 6 points? What a fucking joke! Thats not even dominance in any way, shape or form. Believe the hype about number 99, there wont ever be anyone else like him in any other sport.
Some of you retards seem to think that Ovechkin, Crosby or some other player will outshine Gretzky. I hate to break it to you but none of those guys will ever eclipse Gretzky no matter how you put it. They aren't scoring anywhere near the totals that Gretzky was tallying up in his first 10 years of play. And I think it is safe to say that if they aren't scoring huge goal totals now then they probably won't be 10 years from now.
I have only been watching Hockey since 1996 so I grew up with Jagr and Sakic and Hasek and now Crosby and Ovechkin as the main stars
But recently I have gone back and watched classic hockey games from the 70's and 80's and early 90's watching Gretzky Lemieux Orr Yzerman Dionne Lafleur Bourque Coffey Messier and more and more
I found that although the older 3rd and 4th liners are really bad compared to today the superstars are so much better than todays superstars
someone wrote here "we must admit that Ovechkin will grow up very fast...if there is one guy who has the potential to reach the 800 goals mark is Ovechkin". I have to disagree with this statement. It will get harder for Ovechkin to score goals as the years go by. Look at Gretzky's stats, they were going down in only his 7th or 8th season. Everybody has their prime years and for now this is Ovechkin's prime.
that was retarded...everyone has their prime years....well fuckface...he has yet to reach them. he is putting up these numbers BEFORE he is in his prime. he is still developing, you homo! you need 7 or 8 seasons under your belt before you say a guy is in his prime.
7 or 8 years will put him past his prime. Gretzky started putting up monster numbers right from the get go. Ovechkin won't catch him. Youtube and the internet in general is a bit light on Gretzky highlights from the early 80s, but go find them. He was godly.
Most amazing moment: Gretzky scoring shorthanded breakaway goal against Mike Vernon in 1988 Smythe Divison Final. Oh, and Mark Messier was in the penalty box.
Gretzky will always be the best hockey player every to play in the NHL. He was one of the few that could rase his game when his team needed him. He could see the ice like no other player could ever. He always could find the person that was open.
Gretzky was never a hitter, and people who hate him say "All he did was score!"
Actually, no. Gretzky had almost as many assists as he did goals, along with the fact that he could read the ice and make the greatest and most spontaneous plays in history. Gretzky being the great one shows that hockey isn't about pure raw talent. It's a team sport that takes thinking and strategy.
92 goals...sid the kid would do it. look at old highlights back then and gretzky is scoring on guys smoking cigarettes and eating french fries off the back of their nets as he shoots!
Ovechkin may be good but he only has raw talent, he doesn't have Gretzky's vision and understanding of the game. Gretzky was so amazing because he always seemed to see things before they actually happened; he was always a couple steps ahead of everyone else. I don't think Ovechkin has that. It seems to me that Crosby is more like Gretzky overall but still will never be as great.
i agree Ovechkin will likely go down as great. Not to devalue Ovechkin's achievements, Gretzky got the NHL record for points in his 2nd season, and reset the record for points (202) and record goals(92) in only his third season. by far the GREAEST
not gonna happen...at the pace hes goin now its gonna take him a little over 15 seasons to reach 800 goal...nobody but gretzky or lemieux could've done that
Those that say Ovechkin and Crosby would have scored tons back in the 80's are correct, but what they don't realize is that NOBODY other than Gretzky could have scored 20 or so goals more than anyone else. Ovechkin is leading the league in goals with 3 tonight (thats 52), I think the next guy has 42, ok big deal 10 goals is not a huge difference, try 28 (Gretzky' 92 to Bossy's 64 in 81-82), now we're talking real domination at an unbelievable level.
for sure!but the game still hadn't evolved then to the level it at today.back in the 80's players didn't train year round as they do today or even to the same intensity.furthermore, goalies didn't even butterfly until 86 (roy's rookie year), the stood most of the time.gretzky's GREAT, no question, but i don't think he would've racked up as many points as today as he did then. but who cares!that was then, this is now, can't compare the past with the present cuz it wouldn't be fair. he's great!
i guess we have our own opinion!personally, my (greatest player) list within the last 20 years would go something like this:
1)lemieux
2)coffey
3)patrick roy
i know most of you are probably scratching you head with the first one, but if you look at the duration of lemieux's career and compare it with gretzky's lemieux was by far superior.he's also a better all around player (hands, strong on the puck, can hit, fight, and very aware). just my two cents!
i dont disagree at all except for number 3 for other reasons (i live in detroit, colorodo sucks, he was good at other areas in his career ^^) but your right, you truthfully cant judge people. Lemieux would have gone farther without health problems. Just like you cant compare howe and gretzky since they played in two different eras where being tough counted back in the day gretzky would fail. Also think about if ovechkin or crosby played in gretzky's era when goalies sucked
ovechkin, crosby r destined 2 b great...that's if they stay focused and healthy. bure, fedorov, and jagr were held in high regard...but what did they do?it's kinda funny cuz even gretzky's agreed that "there will never b another wayne because players r bigger, faster, harder hitting than they've ever been which makes it that much more competative."eventually u evolve urself out of the game would u agree?
Lemieux might've been up to Gretzky's par skillwise, but when it comes to pure intelligence he falls short by quite a margin. Sometimes when Gretz played you'd see 2-3 players trying to coordinate a hit on him, but they all missed cuz he just slipped away.
Also, Gretzky is the one with 60 or so NHL records, including more points per game and more assists than mario has points :).
No matter who you like the most though, they were both fantastic players no doubt!
The way i look at it those are all great players. I personally think gretzky is the greatest. but somewhere i saw a question if you could put 1 line together (5 player line, not just offense) who would it be. This is where i feel bobby orr doesn't fit in. The line i would use would include Gretzky Lemieux Lidstrom ray bourque Howe. Each member can play their role. Bobby orrs role was to rush the puck and still get back. But with fire power like this who needs a player like orr thatcan rush
As far as the impact on hockey itself, there's no question Wayne is tops. Best player ever? The everlasting question it seems. Howe, Lemieux, Orr and Gretzky. Can you put them in order from most greatest?
Gretzky was that good and more! I dont know if there will be a player like him again especially how hockey is now. Maybe a blessing he showed his talents back in the 80's and its still there to watch.
They can say what they want about Bobby Orr, but Wayne Gretzky is still the greatest hockey player ever. No one dominated the game like him. Between 1981-82 and 1986-87, the scoring race was over by the end of December. Gretzky had already won it by then, having a ton more points than anyone else. Stupid Gary Suter probably cost the Great One a chance at 3000 career points with his hit at the 91 Canada Cup.
I am a 40 year old, far from the Canadian winters of the 80's when I was in high school up there. I lived near Toronto but on Sunday morning we were all Gretzky's.
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS. You will get kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However, if you don't post this comment to at least 3 videos, you will die within 2 days. Copy and paste this, to be saved
Great video!! Unbelievable comments though!! Howe come on. Howe took 25 Seasons to reach 800 goals and Gretzky took 16 seasons to shatter the record. Gretzky play 20 NHL seasons with 1072 goals, 2297 assists, and 3369 points. Howe played 32 seasons with 1071 goals, 1518 assists, and 2589 points. Gretzky almost outpointed him in assists alone... Still holds or shares 60 NHL records. Gretzky is and always will be the greatest!!
Maybe not, I mean Wayne knew where to be and where to put the puck. He didn't appear flashy but his mind was maybe the greatest ever. That might mean that he was the best ever.
The point I'm making is that I'm not sure you can choose either.
I think Gretz would only place 3rd in the greatest hockey player of all time. 1-bobby orr, 2-gordie howe, 3-gretz. Being the greatest means being great all around, that means playing defence and playing with an edge. Thats what those 2 had that gretz didnt. But Gretz is the greatest offensive hockey player of all time though.
PS.... Gretzky was the greatest scorer no doubt. Bobby Orr was the greatest Hockey Player All Time. Like on ESPN's 50 greatest Athletes, Howe was "The Father", Gretzky "The Son" and Orr was "The Holy Ghost"
hey if anyone doesnt think grezky is the greatest just consider this. Mario scored 199 in 76 games. gretzky had 205 in 74. I also here that if he didn't have the players he wouldn't as been as productive.well the oilers that where getting 130-150 pts a year didn't get that hight but bernie nichols did of the la kings. you can say all you want about gretzky but his numbers are so fare and away high that NO one can reasonably argue he's not the greatest
Gretzky could think inside of other players' time reference. It was often suggested that a study be done to see if his brain showed why this was so - don't know if it was ever done. Orr was just as exciting because of his end to end scoring, But Gretz had this look about him when he was cruising - it was unique.
Why are some people dissing Gretzky here? Gee the guy only has or shares more records than anyone else in the game...plus if he isn't considered the best player of all-time, then how about second best-behind Bobby Orr.

Anyone notice on almost every goal he scores in this clip, he fakes the short first, goalie moves, opens his legs, then he scores 5 hole?

There's a reason many will argue that Orr, Howe or possibly Lemieux may have been better.

my video is called 1994 New York Rangers. the 8 oilers that won the cup for the rangers in 1994 were Colin Campbell - Messier - Graves - Beukaboom - MacTavish - Anderson - Lowe - Tikeneen. the rangers only retired two ranger players from the 1994 team because that's all there was. the rest were oilers and hawks. 1994 LETS GO OILERS!

lol, a no-hit rule, very nice, no one wanted to hit him because then he would have to deal the line Gretzky was on, no matter what team he played for, and you put lemieux at the top, lemieux played in the same era as gretzky, and did you not see the way gretzky could put the puck in the net againt Roy, brodeur the best goalies of all-time.

Oh and btw, retire # 4 league wide now!
BilliieBobSmith 3 years ago
Coffey over took him in points, Potvin was a better all round D and the old timers would say Horton was the best defender in a pinch. So Orr's longevity of greatness is not to the same level as #99's. Orr holds 1 record (and it is awesome) but G holds 60 many of which will not be overtaken in our life times. Orr was awesome!!!!!!!! but doesn't warrent retiring #4 league-wide
woodss3 2 years ago
There were only 6 teams when Howe played but still. If the 120 best hockey players are playing in the same league, is there any room for weaklings and mediocre players? Not even close. So with that, perhaps it was the toughest to stay on top during that year and Howe always stayed on top or near the top for 20 or so years. He finished in the top 10 every year from 1949 thru 1970. He was tougher than any of the top 3 players of all time. Why isnt he mentionned more often as possibly the greatest?
OilersCanadasTeam 3 years ago
Too bad it is now relegated to "regional" sport status and most southern teams will probably fold in the next few years.
mrfiggins 3 years ago 2
he is mentioned as one of the greatest players of all time, he might of been if he stayed out of the box, come on, he has his own hat-trick, the goal, the assist and the fight. No one in the past, present or future could do what gretzky did. Though with that being, not to many could be the all around player like Howe, the top points and the PIM he took, not as shabby.
holidaycheer123 3 years ago
he is # 3 in the history of hockey. That is nothing to scoff at. He was the complete forward, but that does not equate to the greatest. Complete and greatest are not the same.
woodss3 2 years ago
There were only six teams then, but the population was also much lower and the talent was drawn only from Canada. So, I think the pre- and post-expansion talent difference is puffed. Howe's achievements were remarkable, but I never saw him do what Gretzky could. When Gretzky played, it looked like everybody else on the ice was much slower. But he wasn't really faster, it was that everybody else could only respond to him.
wentshow 2 years ago
troo troo... nobody will never be even close to gretzky... he truly was the great one!!
reaperslo 2 years ago
Howe was widely thought to be the best of all time before Gretzky came along (at least among forwards). But since Gretzky really demolished every record ever, there are few logical arguements for Howe over Gretzky. Howe played even longer, and was incredibly consistant, but never really reached the same heights as Gretzky did during his prime (200+ seasons, winning scoring races by nearly 80 pts, etc). Besides, Gretzky has more assists than anyone else has points, even Howe.
shazariahl 2 years ago
Ah, the debate goes on about the greatest hockey player of all time. I think we can all agree that the top 3 absolutely includes Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux in no particular order. How about Gordie Howe as a definite #4 and Maurice Richard as #5. I know its almost impossible to compare eras, but ask yourself this: can a player be as great as perhaps Gordie Howe? He was the fiercest player ever known. And he was almost always a top 4 or 5 point scorer and won his last Art Ross when he was 35.
OilersCanadasTeam 3 years ago
actually the top three i would go with is gretzky, howe cuz howe was the second best ever and he had the second most goals points and stuff
Sundin456 3 years ago
botch061502: Gretzky also accomplished more with less.
OilersCanadasTeam 3 years ago
shouldnt there be better highlights of him apart from empty net goals? and it seemed to me that the passes his teammates gave him looked better than most of his goals..

also, The Oilers won a cup less than two years after Gretzky was traded. whats that say about the caliber of teammates? maybe they wouldnt ve won as many without Gretzky, but they still had the ability to win without him.Health issues also played a big part. Gretzky was always healthy. Lemieux was putting up stellar numbers with cancer, and his back had gotten so bad it got to the point where his trainer was lacing his skates for him, yet his numbers were unaffected. #66>#99
botch061502 3 years ago
Lemieux hands down. Gretzky had the better career but Lemieux was the greater player. Look at the era in which Gretzky played in. when he was getting 200pt seasons.teams wore long pants, defensemen could barely skate, goaltenders looked like Mr. Salty in net, and the butterfly style didn't even exist. It was ridiculously easy to score goals. also look at his supporting cast. The caliber of teammates around Gretzky was amazing.Lemieux had crap for the most part and still managed to win.
botch061502 3 years ago
Joe Mullen, Kevin Stevens, Tom Barasso, Jagr, Zalapski, Paul Coffey John Cullen, Rob Brown, Recchi, Trotier, Kovalev, Zubov, Lang, Hatcher.. were not chumps. I'd say Pitts had a pretty stacked team.
Also, Billy Smith, Hexstall, ROY, Fuhr, Moog all played in the 80s and kicked ass. No Mr. Salties there. G's records: NHL, international, and junior = the best!

Gretzky should be celebrated for his amazing career and his importance to the sport. But on the ice, Mario Lemieux was the Greatest One.

Evidence of Lemieux being the top's? writers, journalists, and broadcasters (Don Cherry, John Davidson, Milt Dunnell, Stan Fischler, Dick Irvin, Brian McFarlane, Bob McKenzie, Jim Matheson, Harry Neale, Frank Orr), as well as coaches, referees, general managers, and former players (Al Arbour, Scotty Bowman, Emile Francis, Howie Meeker, Scotty Morrison, Roger Neilson, Bud Poile, Sam Pollock, Marcel Pronovost, Billy Reay, Glen Sather, Harry Sinden, Red Storey). He was oo big, too strong, too fast.
botch061502 3 years ago
A worthy argument...Lemieux...like Orr...wasn't protected by the league either...
There was a no-hit rule for Gretzky...don't let anyone tell you different...it was there.
Cheers.

@dantastic76 I'm with you on this one...but if you want to say Mario, Bobby and Gordie are better...you can always make an arguement for them. last i checked there was no place on any stats sheets for projected points or goals...nor handicaps for which teams and eras are played. stats are stats....and greatness is measured by what happened not what could've happened. you can argue who has a more impressive stat(s) or record(s), but it's pointless and groundless to argue someone is a greater player for what they could've accomplished if they never, in fact, did accomplish it.

OilersCanadasTeam 3 years ago

jpoux27 3 years ago

it's total subjectiv who's the best hockeyplayer..
CoLoGnEsHaRkY88 3 years ago
no it is'nt. When there are such evidences as these mentioned below, you can't deny that Lemieux was a much better overall player. Gretzky was a little diva whom no one ever dared touch. I remember seeing lindros refrained from bodychecking because he had noticed it was Gretzky
jpoux27 3 years ago
I could have scored on the two set ups Gretzky gave that punk Lindros in the Canada up. Gretzky was better than Lemieux defensively. He did not body check much due to his size, but try getting by him when he was fore checking (he could hem you in or intercept a puck/best read ever), he could also back check, break up a 3 on 1 and skate the other way.
superdave198 3 years ago 2
Who would you pick between Gretzky and Lemieux to play along with a bunch of no names? Gretzky better defensively, maybe. Lemieux had the size, the power, and the reach to make other players look like pee-wees. He was a player of another league. 69 goals in 60 games with a cancer through that in 1993. It says it all.

100% right on #99's ability on the forecheck. His hadn-eye was unmatched and he could pick a fly out of the air.
woodss3 2 years ago
See, in Gretzky's best years with the Oilers, there was no expansion. There was 4 teams added in 79 (Oilers included) and then no expansion until 1991. The bad teams in the 80's were simply not as bad the bad ones of the 70's. Please folks, look at the stats of those old Capitals and Seals. Both garbage teams. Anyway, the point Im making is that you can compare Orr to other players of his era but not to Gretzky and Lemieux. Its that simple.
OilersCanadasTeam 3 years ago
Debating whos the best hockey player ever is totally subjective. You can't compare eras, its that simple. Bobby Orr played in several expansion eras (1967-68, 1970-71, 1972-73 and 1974-75. 6 teams were added in 67, 2 in 70, 2 in 72 and finally 2 in 74. Anyone who thinks a great performance against a bad team (expansion team) is worth merit, that person doesnt understand what true greatness is. I would like to see Bobby Orr's stats against GOOD teams alone compared to Gretzky and Lemieux.

He would have never ever done that with the pens of Lemieux's time in the 80 's
jpoux27 3 years ago
Gretzky was the best because he made the players around him better. He was able to bring out the natural high talent of players like Kurri etc. Kurri would have never scored 71 goals playing for another team. Even at age 35 Gretzky still scored over 100 points.
ferret6677 3 years ago
What I find most amazing about this video archive is Gretzky at 5 had kept many little skating and shooting tendencies through all those years. The shoulder dip, weight on the front foot shifting.....same skating stride. Maybe it's true---those first years are the most important. All these nutty debates must end. The player with the best + / - numbers is simply the best player ever. This takes nothing away from superb talents like Gretzky and Lemieux. Orr was most dominant. Period.
matt75hooper 3 years ago

nascash 3 years ago 2
I like to make the arguement as well that Lemieux might have been better without the injuries, but deep down inside I can say Gretzky was the best ever. He has 1,000 more pints then Messier come on that's pretty sick!!!!
clauda333 3 years ago
Mario injuries and sickness were not late in his career, if so I would never make hypothetical points.
Most of his games missed were in his prime, so if we go by what his averages were in the games he missed it would be greater for his totals than just his overall averages.
Bigbadben7 3 years ago
Lemieux misssed 513 games and played 572 less than Gretzky.
Based on averages Mario scores 182 more goals than Wayne in when you add the 513 games and 227 more goals than Wayne if he had played as many total games.
Then consider that Wayne played with great teams initially and Mario was with the worst.
According to Doctors Mario, due to his back, was at NO time in his carrer better than 80%.
Bigbadben7 3 years ago
paul Coffey who won cups with Wayne and mario said that Lemeiux was the best he had ever played with and Bobby Orr said that Lemieux was the best he had ever seen.
Bigbadben7 3 years ago
...and Bobby Orr could skate circles around Coffey, Gretzky, and Lemieux.
Did Lemieux score 50 goals in 39 games?
TheRealDerfMan 3 years ago
When Wayne scored 50 in 39 he was with the best team in the NHL, Mario was with the worst.
Mario scored 5 goals 5 different ways in one game.
It was Mario who stopped Wayne's scoring titles in a row at 7.
Wayne ended with 10, mario with 6.
However, Wayne's final 3 all game in season where Mario mised numerous games.
89-90, broken wrist.
90-91 back surgery,
93-94 anema and post cancer fatigue.
Otherwise mario would have at least 9.

jrpeters5: youre very right.
PaulCoffey7 3 years ago
Some of you retards seem to think that Ovechkin, Crosby or some other player will outshine Gretzky. I hate to break it to you but none of those guys will ever eclipse Gretzky no matter how you put it. They aren't scoring anywhere near the totals that Gretzky was tallying up in his first 10 years of play. And I think it is safe to say that if they aren't scoring huge goal totals now then they probably won't be 10 years from now.

someone wrote here "we must admit that Ovechkin will grow up very fast...if there is one guy who has the potential to reach the 800 goals mark is Ovechkin". I have to disagree with this statement. It will get harder for Ovechkin to score goals as the years go by. Look at Gretzky's stats, they were going down in only his 7th or 8th season. Everybody has their prime years and for now this is Ovechkin's prime.
PaulCoffey7 3 years ago
that was retarded...everyone has their prime years....well fuckface...he has yet to reach them. he is putting up these numbers BEFORE he is in his prime. he is still developing, you homo! you need 7 or 8 seasons under your belt before you say a guy is in his prime.
Aleister77newaccount 3 years ago
7 or 8 years will put him past his prime. Gretzky started putting up monster numbers right from the get go. Ovechkin won't catch him. Youtube and the internet in general is a bit light on Gretzky highlights from the early 80s, but go find them. He was godly.

Gretzky will always be the best hockey player every to play in the NHL. He was one of the few that could rase his game when his team needed him. He could see the ice like no other player could ever. He always could find the person that was open.
aslammohamed 3 years ago
Gretzky was never a hitter, and people who hate him say "All he did was score!"
Actually, no. Gretzky had almost as many assists as he did goals, along with the fact that he could read the ice and make the greatest and most spontaneous plays in history. Gretzky being the great one shows that hockey isn't about pure raw talent. It's a team sport that takes thinking and strategy.
braino2000 3 years ago

Ovechkin may be good but he only has raw talent, he doesn't have Gretzky's vision and understanding of the game. Gretzky was so amazing because he always seemed to see things before they actually happened; he was always a couple steps ahead of everyone else. I don't think Ovechkin has that. It seems to me that Crosby is more like Gretzky overall but still will never be as great.

PaulCoffey7 4 years ago
for sure!but the game still hadn't evolved then to the level it at today.back in the 80's players didn't train year round as they do today or even to the same intensity.furthermore, goalies didn't even butterfly until 86 (roy's rookie year), the stood most of the time.gretzky's GREAT, no question, but i don't think he would've racked up as many points as today as he did then. but who cares!that was then, this is now, can't compare the past with the present cuz it wouldn't be fair. he's great!

i dont disagree at all except for number 3 for other reasons (i live in detroit, colorodo sucks, he was good at other areas in his career ^^) but your right, you truthfully cant judge people. Lemieux would have gone farther without health problems. Just like you cant compare howe and gretzky since they played in two different eras where being tough counted back in the day gretzky would fail. Also think about if ovechkin or crosby played in gretzky's era when goalies sucked
recordac26 4 years ago
ovechkin, crosby r destined 2 b great...that's if they stay focused and healthy. bure, fedorov, and jagr were held in high regard...but what did they do?it's kinda funny cuz even gretzky's agreed that "there will never b another wayne because players r bigger, faster, harder hitting than they've ever been which makes it that much more competative."eventually u evolve urself out of the game would u agree?
jfmedee 4 years ago

Put Gretzky in this era of no redline and no clutching and grabbing, the guy probably gets 300 pts instead of 200, best ever by far.

Happy Birthday.
I am a 40 year old, far from the Canadian winters of the 80's when I was in high school up there. I lived near Toronto but on Sunday morning we were all Gretzky's.
This video brought a tear to my eye.

I love Gretzky too, and I think as an Oiler he was the best player to ever play a game and I'm not sure anyone will match that, ever again.
BUT...Mario Lemieux, after Gretzky left the Oilers, I think Mario was better than Gretzky for the rest of their careers, at that point and on.

Perhaps even the greatest all-time professional athlete... all sports considered. Better than Ruth. Better than Jordan. Just unreal.

What about football dude, or soccer as you would call it? Maybe he is the greatest for Americans and canadians, but not for me.
