Funny to hear Clarkson - he always exaggerates for humor and at the time thought Villeneuve was the greatest (later admitted Senna was more spectacular)... the thing is though, modern F1 is not like this (and re-passing is rare but not unheard of, I've seen Hamilton do it lately) primarily because of the "one move to defend" - whereas here, you see neither driver move off the racing line more than a half car width while leading, no ridiculous crowding the whole track.
""Those few laps were just fantastic for me - out braking each other and trying to race for the line, touching each other but without wanting to put the other car out."
@SeanValen .. bud these guys had to have balls they were REAL f1drivers Schumi Sucked balls!!!!! Villeneuve and arnoux would kick his ass any day....the only reason schumi win his 7 world championships is because 1 senna died before he could kick schumi's ass and 2 schumi was at the right place at the right time....Ferrari at tht time was so far ahead of everybody else Mindy could contemd with thier car
@sirkvaldez I was looking for some of the other events mentioned in that article. I could NOT find a video of Eddie Hill running under 5 seconds in the quarter-mile, but I found the one where there was a fist fight at the 1979 Daytona 500. It's on here!
this is what F1 needs to become again not the crap they pushed on us from 2000-2007 and the crap that's about to unfold in 2010 with the proposed strike by half the teams.
i'm a real fan of topgear... but what jeremy said is bullshit, really. driver's do try to overtake in F1, all the time and they do fight back... these cars more suited for what they were doing too. the cars were sucked to the ground, literally... they had slicks so the cars were more responsive and could go sideways. the groves in todays cars flex to much. these guys had the advantage of slipstreaming too, at spa this year, the battle between hamilton and raikkonen completely proves jeremy wrong
What would the FIA stewards from Spa 08 say to this one? Propose a lifetime ban to both drivers? OMG, such a terrible thing - these cars were actually racing and overtaking each other...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As somebody else pointed, the "commentator" is Jeremy Clarkson, the biggest twat in British TV. He makes a living out of stating a load of bullshit in a matter-of-fact kinda way, in issues ranging from politics to motor-sports. You can see this un-charismatic being in the show Top Gear.
Regardless of the narrating idiot... what a great race!
Yeah typical uncharasmatic twat. The most popular car show in the world. The most well known motor journalist in the world. Gets to drive the fastest cars in the world. Six figure plus annual income. Oh and no bullshit Villneuve was the most naturaly talented and fastest F1 driver of his day.
This fact of course still remains, but cars today have lower air resistance, althought the speeds are faster so slipstreaming is almost the same, but in corners you loose much time lying behind another car.
But the fact is still that he doesn't seem to know anything about F1 technology. I don't know how you can agree with him. It's because of aerodynamics overtaking is much harder now. In those days it was an advantage to be behind another car, you got less air resistance and could go faster and more easily overtake.
Those were the days. but the stuff about overtaking these days is bollocks. its due to the aerodynamics and the turbulent air that is created; making it very difficult for a following car to get too close cos the car starts to handle like shit! But it is true that nowdays drivers fighting for championships can be a little reluctant to get involved in scrapes like that, in case they end up not finishing!
And I should add that I have never heard a commentator that based his talk on his own opinion and thoughts, and NOT on facts as much as this one. For example; He said Gilles Villeneuve was the best racecar driver ever, which is his own opinion a commentator should never do this. Althought I like Gilles Villeneuve very much and no doubts he is one of the best ever.
I think the narrator is one of the worst ever, he doesn't seem to know anything about F1 today. Overtakings does happen today, but not as much because of the development of the sport... it has nothing at all to do with the drivers. It's the aerodynamics today that makes it much harder to ovetake.
yes the commentator is right, the overtaking doesnt happen anymore nowadays because they only care about money and dont really give a sh*t about racing... :-(

not anymore F1 is back.
Also 3 words: Senna, Prost, suzuka
YOU CANNOT TALK ABOUT GREATEST DUELS and not mention that race.
The best modern fights
Schumacher final laps of the hungarian gp in 2006
Lewis hamilton Vs Kimi raikonen spa 2008
Not really a fight but perhaps one of the greatest drives ever Schumacher Brazil 2006

The narrator is Jeremy Clarkson, I'd love to know what program this is from.
However, Gilles was not in an equal car, his Ferrari was vastly inferior to the much more powerful Renault Turbo.
