I never recommend buying electronic or fragile components online you have no idea what you will get or who your doing business with always buy from a local store so that you can at least return faulty items with ease
personally i think this monitor is great from what i've heard it is just what your used to or your personal preference and the monitor isn't bad at all, because from all the reviews i've seen everyone rates this 5/5 10/10 or say its great so you must be very picky with monitors
I think at the price point it seems to look decent enough as they retail $160 CAD... Im a Web Designer aswell, so since I dont really rely on 100% color accuracy I think for most people it will suffice.. I may be getting this, will post my thoughts if i get it..
I have one of these new cheap E-IPS monitors with led backlight and it definitely is a complete lottery if you get consistent background or not. Most of them have at least some backlight bleeding and many have alot.
As they say. You get what you pay for, IPS or not. I've noticed the new Dell 24" UltraSharps are pretty crap too, they're cheaper than the outgoing model and you can see why. Thankfully I got the 2010 model which is actually damn good, rather than the new 2012 model that gets all the bad reviews. I think they're using the same panels as these things as I'm pretty sure LG makes them. I have no idea why they're using cheaper less accurate panels in what's supposed to be their "pro" line.
The dirty AG look is something that is most annoying when reading text.. for other things its not annoying. Backlight uniformity is also only an issue on pure light backgrounds. Backlight bleed is an issue only on dark images where it fills your entire screen.
I'm keeping this monitor though because I paid about $130 for this on Black Friday for the 23" version.. the pros far outweigh the cons at this price (far better colors, far better saturation, viewing angles superior to TN)
Thanks for your review, I'm graphic designer, everything on the specs of this monitor was looking great but when I saw this I just run to cancel my order, any recommendation for a monitor for spending lots of hours working?
This is one hell of a beast monitor. get one if you wonder about image quality. Dont let the "5ms" thing fool you. This monitor has just the same quality as the moitors within the 400++€ price range. I got one and its the best purchase i've made in a while.
If its wobbly just fucking glue it like i did. I mean come on.
I actually agree with this review. I had purchased this monitor after reading about the IPS hype. Only thing I will give to this monitor is the viewing angle, and that is all. Being an IPS, the color were not on par for an IPS. The stand is wobbly, and if you use this read text, it is almost impossible to calibrate . The AG coating throws makes everything blurry. Lacks uniformity in color and brightness, and HUGE backlight bleeding.
@ajlloyd0000 I wish i saw this vid before i brought mine from amazon. For some reason mine has like a yellow patch on the top left corner. Not impressed so im sending it back.
That's too bad, I was actually considering one, Its available for $179CAD now.. I've personally got a Dell Ultrasharp 2405FPW but its a used one a bought, and it has developed yellow tint on the sides..
I got an LG W2220P model which is also IPS but not LED - and it doesn't suffer from above mention problems... In conclusion "LED = Bullshit". If I was in his situation - i would also send it back - that truly looks bad and I've seen a lot of similar complaints for this specific models, so not a rare situation.
was about to buy this monitor i wonder why are the viewing angles are so bad :S i mean my TN panel is worse but not by much then this one :S why is it so bad :/ ?
OP is right in regards to this monitor. I just received mine from Newegg and the whites are aweful. I went through all necessary setup and calibration. I am reverting back to my LCD (CCFL) and saving for a quality IPS. These are cheap for a reason!
First let me say thanks for your review. I agree with you about the uneven luminosity, but I don't think it's as bad as you make it sound. Also, I have ZERO backlight bleed on a full black image at full brightness. This makes me think that you have a defective unit. For the price, I don't think this monitor could be beat. I was torn between this one and the Dell u2211h. At nearly twice the price (at the time), I couldn't justify it. FWIW, I think the colors are amazing and I had no dead pixels.
You made it sound like this monitor is horrible, it can't possibly be that bad. 400 candela/m2 is also too bright to be looking at long-term by the way, you will damage your eyes. These monitors are only $178 right now and I'm tempted to get one, but I can't decide.
Did you try gently massaging or tapping the screen with a microfiber cloth by the way? Screens are delicate, you might have been able to fix some of the uneven lighting. Pixels can also be restored this way.
@UbiquitousComplacenC . I hate to say it, but it was that bad. I wasn't exaggerating at all. This wasn't a case of stuck pixels or a tainted screen surface. This was clearly an issue with inconsistent back lighting.
Also, I've been using two 400 cd/m2 monitors for 3 years, and my vision is 20/15 (as it's always been, and I've been sitting in front of monitors for 10+ hrs a day / 5 days a week for the past 11 years). So eitiher I'm a super-human mutant, or your claim is incorrect.
@wussyib I guess I'll have to look for a better monitor then. I was hoping I had fallen into a bargain here lol. The cost of three screens really adds up quick, and the premium on IPS screens makes it worse.
I looked it up and apparently it only causes eye strain. You're probably young so it doesn't affect you that much, but in the long term it might. Why risk it? Play it safe imo, you only have 1 body in this life. Thanks a lot for the review, take care.
@UbiquitousComplacenC It does cause eye strain, but generally speaking, most monitors will regardless of quality w/ prolonged use. I'm not THAT young (wish I was). Not in my 20's anymore.
The problem was so bad w/ these monitors,I'm inclined to think that maybe they were just defective? It's funny because LG makes the iPad 2 displays, and Apple supposedly is switching suppliers because the backlight bleed is such a bad problem. Not to say LG is bad, because they make some great stuff
@wussyib Count that as an additional 2 defective. I had to send one back to Amazon RIGHT AWAY because of a dead pixel in the middle of the screen (LG wouldn't accept the claim without TWO dead pixels at least 2 inches from the edge), and I may have to send back the one I'm using now for a vertical red line 2 inches from the right edge. If LG won't repair it, I'm going to send it back to Amazon (at a loss, if necessary) in order to get a different monitor. This vintage is a failure, sadly.
im thinking about buying it. the white background is bad luminosity-wise or color-wise? if it's color wise just download the luminosity profile and you're good to go
Just bought a Samsung PX2370 and will be returning it because small text is being displayed blurry. Thought about getting the LG IPS236V instead but that doesn't look good though.
ya im assuming it was a defect with your monitor. Of the one review that is out there, they do mention the less than stellar viewing angles (for an ips panel), but nothing about uneven backlighting. They also gave it a 5 out of 5.
I would also contribute the lack of pure whiteness to the AG coating. It's a tradeoff but a very minor one imo.
Also, when I switched from TN to IPS, I did not like what I initially saw at first either. The Anti-glare coating was seriously getting to me. But once you get used to it and focus on the colors, you realize how amazing it is. It seems like you just got a bad one too. The viewing angles and uniformity should not be that bad.
I just ordered one as well and it was delivered today. I'll let you know what I think.
@Gfresh404 The anti-glare coating definitely messed with the claimed 178 degree viewing angle, but it doesn't have any bearing on the backlight consistency. It seriously was that bad. Color's looked decent, although it didn't blow me away like I thought it would.
I couldn't get over how bad the backlighting was. I've had plenty of cheap monitors that have problems with excessive light (bleeding), etc., but I've never seen even a cheap monitor that has such noticable light fall off.
Dude thank You so much for this video! All the best!
