Contrary to comments here, a fighter has 20 seconds, not 10 seconds, if he's knocked OUT OF THE RING. This was the case with Jack Dempsey when he was knocked out of the ring in the famous Firpo fight. That fight was interesting too because D was PUSHED back into the ring by a reporter, & that was a technical disqualification (the fighter has to return on his own power). But this poses an interesting question: I suppose only if a person in his own entourage pushes him back would he be DQ'd.
We are talking a fraction of a second regarding Benn getting knocked out of the ring and climbing back in. Absolutely absurd to suggest he didnt make the count. It was an epic battle , sad for sure but an amazing battle of wills.Nobody wants to see boxers get hurt, but for me Nigel beat the fight out of the g-man, there were enough punches to the head to inflict damage on either boxer.

Roy jones is very hard to get a clan punch on, if you watch his old fight he literally only gets hit with like less than 5 clean head shots the whole time. Just watched the Documentary. It's saddening. I feel for McClellan, it was obvious that Benn took anabolic steroids and is sickening that he can live his life normally. He hasn't even admitted it yet. He shed a tear when he met McClellan several years later but does not regret it. @Triqzo It is not obvious Benn took steroids. The claim was made 15 years later for starters and as for Benn missing the test, he was clearly exhausted and as well as that if he was on drugs he would have had taken a masking agent so the test would have come out clean anyway.

Benn was up at 6 and through the ropes at 10. I see no problem there. This was a championship fight and the ref would have known that Ben n is the type to quickly recover and fight back. The only reason I would have wanted it stopped was with the benefit of hindsight to save McClellan from suffering that awful injury!

McCllelan was known to attempt to drop alot of weight before fights. Before Julian Jackson fight the truth was coming out that he needed to be fighting higher. His body and power should have pushed him to light heavyweight. Massive drops in weight before a fight is always dangerous.

FACT: McClellan lost 30lbs in 6 weeks. Jimmy Garcia lost 40lbs in a month before his fight vs Gabby Ruelas. Extreme weight loss before a fight causes "brain drain"- your body cannot catch up during extreme exersion. This is what killed Garcia and almost killed McClellan. Boxing doesnt monitor training-and its dangerous.

@caileansmith the controversy was the referee gave ben about 20 seconds just casuse he was out of the ring but he was still on the boxing matt so he should only have got 10 seconds and so in fact he lost the fight in the first round, he should opnly have had a 20 second count if he fell off the ring onto the floor. face it ben was totally obliterated he lost the fight end of story fucking referee didnt know what the fuck he was doing clown

I was at this fight, the best fight ever in a British ring. The crowd all stood for each round and sat down after each bell. Watch Frank Bruno going crazy. If he'd showed half as much aggression in the ring, he would have been world champ for 15 years. Shame about the injury to McClellan. I haven't been to a boxing match since that day, cant help feeling I'll never see the like again

Benn was up at 6 and through the ropes at 10. I see no problem there. This was a championship fight and the ref would have known that Ben n is the type to quickly recover and fight back. The only reason I would have wanted it stopped was with the benefit of hindsight to save McClellan from suffering that awful injury!

Dennis andres said mcclellan wasn't right going into this fight beforehand. Torr 59622 your spot on. A fit mcclellan would have one this fight in the first or second round. He technically one the fight after he knocked Benn through the ropes if you look at the long count! Benn was out!! Andres reckoned Mc Clellan was no more than 60% fit for this fight!

Could you image the fight being called off 3 hours before due to a former GP of McClellan who suspects with his strange behavior and a little speech impediment that he’s only 60%

I am of the opinion that Gerald was "Damaged-Goods" before the contest, Denis Andres had lived over in Detroit for 2yrs training at the Kronk, Andres live at the home of Gerald McClelland, when Gerald came over here to fight Benn he naturally stayed at Denis Andres home. I did have an invite from Gerald to fly over to watch the fight and decided to stay 5 days in London.

@dazza2610 Dennis says that Gerald had been sparring with Heavyweights in the Kronk and was not the same guy he knew, he said that he was physically not right, he repeatedly complained of throbbing pains towards the back of the temple. This was too familiar behavior of when I last checked Gerald over on the 10th February 2 weeks before the fight was to take place.

McCllelan was known to attempt to drop alot of weight before fights. Before Julian Jackson fight the truth was coming out that he needed to be fighting higher. His body and power should have pushed him to light heavyweight. Massive drops in weight before a fight is always dangerous.

FACT: McClellan lost 30lbs in 6 weeks. Jimmy Garcia lost 40lbs in a month before his fight vs Gabby Ruelas. Extreme weight loss before a fight causes "brain drain"- your body cannot catch up during extreme exersion. This is what killed Garcia and almost killed McClellan. Boxing doesnt monitor training-and its dangerous.
