asking how old your daughter is? r rated music from bikini kill is for adults, I agree but this is a good .. no! GREAT idea. barbies and make up aren't the things these kids need in they're child hood.
the kid most likely meant hilary duff wants to sing about love and high school. she wants to sing about all kinds of amazing things like ponys and hick ups!
Im so curious, dear diary, lonely, anticipating, cinderella, let me be, thats where you take me, before the love, me against the music, Early Mornin, Touch of my hand, the hook up, shadow, Brave New Girl, Everytime, Chris Cox Megamix, Someday I will understand, Mona Lisa, And then we kiss, Freakshow,Ooh Ooh Baby, Everybody, Mmm Papi, Mannequin, My Baby, Rock Me In
Am 16 years old , multi-racial , and coming to the fact that music and art has changed my life in so much ways. Am not the perfect asian girl , and i have 3 tones of blue in my hair. But you know what , fuck the magazine's, fuck the perfect body.
Fine then. Whine all you want. But when a movie hits theaters called "Boyz Rock!" because girls are destroying boys' self-esteem you would wish you would've listened to me.
This is too focused on the girl gender. Sexism isn't a good trait, and the girls who shout "Girls rock boys suck!" might get beat up in tougher schools. And don't throw "But females were abused in history!" at me, I have two good reasons why this can't be an excuse: 1: Its 2009, but: 2: Just because women are being abused doesn't mean turning the world against boys will help. If girls are given more rights to boys, then in the next few generation this whole things going to happen again.
the movie may focus entirely on the girl gender but i assure you, the camp itself doesn't. there really isn't a "girls are better than boys" message there. just a "girls and boys are equal, here's a safe space to make music" message. there's nothing wrong with having a music camp for girls just like there's nothing wrong with having girl scouts. if someone were to make a music camp for boys it would be just as acceptable if sexism and racism were as seriously discouraged as they are at RC4G.
i love this movie. i have played at many events and put on benefit shows for the camp and this movie is so inspiring and fills me with happiness and makes me want to go and volunteer at one of the camps. and i cant stop singing that sanfrancisco song to people. so catchy.
This camp isn't supposed to be stereotypical, it's supposed to empower girls to banish the stereotypes that girls can't play music. It's to build confidence. It's fun.
I dont have anything agianst girls being rock 'n' roll, infact my best my is a girl and rocks but rock 'n' roll is a life style that you give yourself when ur young and cant really just be forced upon you at some shitty little camp where u get all emotional and hug and cry...
First of all, it isn't a shitty little camp - it's one of my favorite places to be on the entire earth. It's also where I learned to play electric bass. The idea isn't that you have to love rock and roll, the idea is to empower women through music. You don't have to go if you don't apply, and someone who doesn't like rock music wouldn't probably apply to a 'rock and roll camp for girls' in the first place.
Yeah, but what if they hate rock music-by nature, not by sexist media-and still have self-esteem issues?
What if they're sensitive to loud noises (eg girls with AUT)?
WHAT IF THE CAMP ENCOURAGES YOUNG GIRLS TO BUY ALBUMS OF FEMALE ROCK SINGERS W/ PA STICKERS ON THEM??!!
I just love it when people bitch about school buses degrading children w/ inappropriate Top40 music then talking about how wonderful this camp is, when it could be encouraging young girls to buy bad CDs.
hey, you apparently have no clear idea of what rock n' roll is... and if you did, you would know it's more than just some shitty life style. rock n' roll is something that connects everyone across all boundries we create between each other. i work with sgrrc(southern girls rock n' roll camp) and at the end of that week, you see people connect on a musical level... it's truely beautiful...
Sean King is a genius who morally and cerebrally gets how important it is to send the message to our girls that who we are what we stand for is more important than what our cup size is!!!
wow, you just completely disregarded the fact that there is an entire patriarchal social paradigm that exists specifically to undermine women's confidence from the moment the doctor says "it's a girl".
I worked here last year! It's such a fabulous place. I was one of the keyboards instructors. But this movie was filmed about 3 years ago, so I obviously wasn't in it. Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls is in Portland, OR and it even has Ladies Rock Camp (for girls over 18) . . . I would really suggest checking it out! If you love music or want to learn, it's a great place for girls of all ages!
By the way, I LOVED the movie! Amelia and Palace still go to camp.
Don't want to say anything out of place, but I'm a woman, I play bass in a band, I'm not quite sure how young girls can't just like rock music because that's what they LIKE. Why does the self esteem issue come into it? Do boys just decide to Rock,Or do they do it cause they like it? when does "women in rock" become a sub genre of it's own? there are so many forms of rock music and men seem to find their nieche really well, I'm not too sure this is a good idea....
come to the camp, etinlovesme, you would see that its not trying to trying to make a subgenre of 'women in rock'. it supports girls who want to play rock. whether or not they have serious self-esteem issues.
Super excited to see this film, and super excited to send my daughter when she's old enough. It doesn't matter what form it takes, or if she does or doesn't decide to rock professionally or for fun later in her life--anything that builds self esteem through hard work and achievement of a goal together with a group of girls working on the same thing, that's what is so great.
This Camp is good as any other but instead of fire and marshmellows, they have guitars!Besides, it can make the girls more confortable with themselves, by teaching that they're beautifil as they are, and they don't need to listen to that "i have to be skinny and blonde" bullshit. I'm a girl, so I know what i'm talking about.
everything about this is wrong. you cannot teachpeople to "rock" . you can or you cant. this is place for deluded parents to live out their own failed individualty vicariously through their spoilt children.everyone featured is a future accountants secretary and/or soccermum.this makes me want to puke. i feel sorry for everyone involved.FYI i am a proffessional sound technician,so i know what im talking about.
well its okay for girls to think they are beautiful in their own way. this alows girls to let themselves go and not care about anything and just be themselves while endulging in rock music
I think you can teach people to 'rock', or at least, to listen rock music. I think that the lyrics add more personality and substance to the kids. I really prefered seeing my daughter listening "When she walks, the revolutions coming" than "Hit me baby, one more time"...
So they taught you about the developmental psychology of young women at "proffessional sound technician" school? That's amazing. Perhaps they should have taught you spelling, grammar and introduced you to a concept called feminism too. "Future accountants secretary and/or soccermum" is how you perceive most young women presented in the movie? Bravo, sweetheart. I think you just transported us back to the gender role dark ages. Please do continue to bequeath us with you wisdom. We're riveted.
Followed, I'm not even going to write a new comment. ;P
I feel bad for these girls. That camp is no better than those fundamentalist Jesus camps.
Brainwashing your kid to have higher self esteem by making her chant "Girls rock!" over and over again isn't going to solve anything.
Why don't these girls do something important? Empower themselves by being better than both men and women instead of letting them invent excuses about how men supress their abilities or whatever ...
Especially since that women HAVE to get married, welcome to the real world you riot grrls, because if women don't get married and have kids, humanity will die out since there would be no future generation.
And Miley Cyrus and Hilary Duff have done SOME good things.
you can absolutely still go to the camp if you dont need to be saved and just want to rock. i go every year and do GRI just to have fun and meet people that love music as much as i do. the instructors are some of the nicest and most supportive people i have ever met in my life.
I just saw this one at a music documentary festival here in Sweden. I knew as soon as the intro came on that i would love Girls Rock!. How cool are these girls?! Of course there is a lot of arguing and drama going on but they struggle together to overcome it. All in all crucial docu and i left the theater with a stupid smile on my face. Go. See. Now!
Ps. If anyone who has seen it could help me writing down the lyrics to Palace punk song about San Fransisco i would really appreciate it. ds.
this looks awesome --- and all the songs being played in the background are fucking rad!!!! those girls screaming make me really happy!! you rock for posting this!
Wow! I just saw a preview of this movie at the local theater, and all I can say is, I CAN'T WAIT for it to open!! The idea of empowering girls, through music, is a GREAT idea! More than that, you can see the results of how it works. In the American culture of the early 21st Century, we think the way to "help" young women is to be condescending. To not empower them, but to infantalize them. We need to prepare them for life. And music is a beautiful way. So, ALL success to Girls Rock!!
my first reaction, hearing someone on the video say she really wants the girl to "find herself," i grew wary, i thought for a second this-- the trailer, the movie-- was going to be overemphasizing everything unimportant about rock and music.
and after watching the full trailer i can not wait to see this movie. i f***ing love to see young kids (and girls especially) feel SO good about themselves.
I love you people! Where were you when i was 15?? no worries! Just glad you are here for these terrific young women...why can't women be men?? Not enough young girls being taught to do this...too many being blindly brainwashed into "suburban fish spawning existence"...you know...just get married honey and pop out babies thing!
This movie was fantastic! I am so glad that there is something out there like this for young girls! I wish i could be a part of this!

Can you go to the camp if you don't need to be saved and just want to rock?

you can absolutely still go to the camp if you dont need to be saved and just want to rock. i go every year and do GRI just to have fun and meet people that love music as much as i do. the instructors are some of the nicest and most supportive people i have ever met in my life.

Go. See. Now!
Ps. If anyone who has seen it could help me writing down the lyrics to Palace punk song about San Fransisco i would really appreciate it. ds.

It's very empowering.
You have no idea what the definition of amazing means untill you experience it.

I would live there if i had a choice.
It gonna start a revolution and i am so proud to be part of it.

my first reaction, hearing someone on the video say she really wants the girl to "find herself," i grew wary, i thought for a second this-- the trailer, the movie-- was going to be overemphasizing everything unimportant about rock and music.
and after watching the full trailer i can not wait to see this movie. i f***ing love to see young kids (and girls especially) feel SO good about themselves.
i can't wait. this'll be phenomenal.

I love you people! Where were you when i was 15?? no worries! Just glad you are here for these terrific young women...why can't women be men?? Not enough young girls being taught to do this...too many being blindly brainwashed into "suburban fish spawning existence"...you know...just get married honey and pop out babies thing!
