but that's not really what defines the deftones.

what defines them is the fact that the music is incredibly hard, and yet soothing and soft with chinos vocals. that's what makes them unique. this song sounds like many other bands to me... as opposed to other songs.

Actually Deftones started slightly eariler in 1988 officially. Korn began somewhere in 92 or 93. Deftones may be a little older but they didn't influence Korn. The somewhat simlualrity between Korn and Deftones is that they are both partly influenced by simular bands. Deftones are in part influenced by Faith No More, partuicualriy Mike Patton. Korn are influenced by Mr. Bungle, another group Patton was in at the time..

KoRn technically did not start the nu-metal scene, Deftones were formed in 1988, five years before KoRn formed. Deftones was actually admitted as an influence of KoRn back in the late 80s and early 90s downtown scene in north cali, so said brian Welch of Korn said back in a Revolver issue years ago. I mos def remember reading it and it struck me. KoRn took nu metal to new heights and revolutionizing alt rock forever in their early, and kickass heyday.

The problem with Deftones is that, musically, they're really good live, but Chino hasn't go the vocal level he had anymore. And there's no needing to be as the CD is. Check out " My own summer " live on recovery 1997. They rocked. Chino was amazing. Hopefully Chino will get that level again.

I love Deftones CD's but they really arnt the greatest live. I've seen them 5 times in concert and 95% of the time their sound was way off. The best I have seen live is either NIN or Tool. Deftones for life though!!!

Nah, I wouldn't go that far. As a band, they're excellent live. Instrumentally, they're right on the mark a good %90 of the time. Chino's voice is what I consider to be "in recovery". He's older, he seemingly damaged his vocal chords, smoked for a long time and has put on a few pounds. Happens to the best of us. The beauty of it is that he'll have to remedy all those things in order to continue making music, at least singing any anyway.
