I wouldn't get too hung up on the whole owen connection. I'm more intrigued that the song playing during the suicidal scene is Elliott Smith's Needle in the Hay. Elliott Smith did commit suicide...which makes the scene all more difficult for me to watch for me. I love Elliott Smith, Anderson, and the Wilson bros.

there's alot of people with depression who you would never think of having sad or negative thoughts about themselves,i had a mate who was reported missing in on news for over three months we later found out that he took his life which never registered on anyone mind,he was the most charmastic person i ever met and was very intelligent...but u know its the ones u least expect who have depression such as many famous comdiens...its tough that luke made that comment not picking up any signs.

It's terribly sad when this happens. So often you hear people say 'You would never have known...' and I often wonder if it is because some people never speak up that they end up taking their own lives whereas those who talk about it get something out of themselves.
