Here's what happened: the plane at 0:12 was already at 103020 feet, after taking off, and called to say that they were over the "marker", which is a radio beacon a few miles past the runway. They then said "position and hold", which has to do with lining up ON the runway. (if they were on the runway, that'd be a problem)
@chestateegold lmao you are absolutely right. I know the pilots was like wtf? and the tower supe was probably askin the local controller, who the hell are you tellin to taxi to position and hold.
i can do ATC... listen... "United 7765, you are cleared to land in the parking lot.... uhhhhh....please contact the valet for further instructions... uhhhhh..... hold on 7765, my pop tart is done. i'm gonna eat it and i'll get back to you.... uhhhhh... continue circling and hold..... uhhhhh..........." (pretty good, huh?)
It ws not because the air traffic controller whose voice can be heard was occupied with and titillated with pride over having his 7yo direct other flights, was it?
its pretty easy to mean something and the vocals do something completely different because the brain capacity to monitor the vocals just ain't there. Watching 3 aircraft that don't want to read back their full instructions and just say roger, will do it pretty quickly.
@atcnick he was, or else he wouldn't have called to the plane at that time. I do it now and again in the sim. I'm looking right at the plane, want it to do exactly what I know it needs to do, but then I say contact departure when i shoulda said contact ground.
@bajesus666 well bajesus666 you made my day or my last 15 min at least ;) @evenings its the same here at the AustroControl and i guess afaik at the DFS in germany, well @baje you are aware after every break controllers are to be briefed at least 15 min prior to there shift ;)
@EveningsGlory yeah I can confirm, 90min on, 30 off for NATS (UK) controlers over an 8hr shift. Not sure about American, but would have thought it would be similar.
@maurjul yeah...and if you had done that i hope 7-3 or bigger would have ran up your ass. controllers are human...we make mistakes to, but notice how the controller corrected himself almost immediately.
@bubu101502 well i'm an ATC so i know and i've made mistakes such as this already. i realy meant that comment to be something to laugh at and not something for someone to take to heart thinking i'm serious.
@maurjul And I'm a pilot and I've done similar mistakes. In my experience ATC and pilots have a good understanding about stuff like this, and never make it a big deal unless it leads to a dangerous situation, which it very rarely does. Thanks for the work you guys in the tower do, it's very appreciated, and we couldn't have done our job without you.
I did that once, in training... "Wizzair 123X, wind, RWY 29 cleared to land" - he was waiting for take-off... Only thing I can say for my defence is that it was 6am and I didn't have my morning coffee yet. Still, the pilot took it with humour, so all's well.
It was probibly him just switching positions in the tower, ive said tower when I was on ground and vice versa but never cleared one to land when on the ground
Tower cleared the aircraft on final to enter the runway and hold position ready for takeoff (position and hold). Then tower realised and corrected the clearance to "cleared to land". Bit of a strange title though, I'd say.
i had a chick in david wayne hooks tower tell me i was cleared to taxi to parking and i was actually already outside of her airspace. she got a good kick outa it.
Correct! Depending on what time of day it is and where an aircraft needs to go, tower controllers can issue the taxi instructions and never have an aircraft contact ground control.
Yep. Ground only has authority when the aircraft is on the ground and is stating 1) Where the aircraft is. 2) What the name of the aircraft is. 3) What their destination and so forth.
no because im flying in class e airspace i can be on any frequency i want. Some controllers in some areas are both ground control and tower control so they get mixed up at times. but yes i coudlve been on a different frequency and never had hear the tx. I stayed on the frequency since i was flying close to her airpace. making sure where traffic is coming from.
lol, no he didn't.... the LC just told him to TPH (a plane on the ground to get on the runway and wait for takeoff clearance) the guy was in the air and obviously knew it was a mistake.. BTW those sound effects are stupid!!!! >:(
Position and hold, means "taxi out to the runway and wait for clearance to take off", which is rather hard to comply to, when you're already airborne trying to land. ;)
Misspeaks happen, it is a way of live, any controller that has made it through training that claims they have never misspoke is a liar. Same can be said about pilots, misspeaks happen, corrected and move on. Which is what the controller did, I bet they laughed a couple times about that.
I was at Champaign ILL airport cleared for takeoff. If I would have followed inst. I would have hit a King Air taking off on an intersecting. So I asked the tower for a camera on my clearance. "What/Why?" I told him I wanted to get a picture of the crash. He just laughed and thanked me for holding. Sometimes we can all just cool our jets (pun intended) and laugh at life.
Okay, drama queen. How would an airborne aircraft go into position and hold? A minor slip of the tongue and everyone on the frequency probably knew what he meant. But feel free to sensationalize.
I can understand the need to talk fast when it is busy but I think that for the most part, ATC can afford to slow down...it's not as if civilian aviation is on a bombing run.
Also, they only sound fast if you don't know what to listen for. 90% of transmissions have the same information in the same order. If you know what to listen for, it all makes sense.
I'm wrong? Is there some set standard that is written somewhere about how fast or slow they must talk? The answer is NO so you are incorrect.
I'm speaking from the experience I have and the experience imparted onto me by the many instructors I fly with. Like I said before and I'll say it again, its better to take another second to ensure you are about to do the right thing than it is to be speaking at the speed of light.
When you have an arrival and a departure every minute on multiple intersecting or parallel runways, fast is good. I agree with IADaveMark that it isn't fast if you know what to listen for.
I agree with parubhi. Approach/departure ATC at heathrow (the busiest international airport in the world) is handeled very calmy. Very rarely do they speak fast. It just has to flow. And also there is a recommened words per minuite as stated in ICAO document (???) can't remember i know there is because i had to learn it for my ATPLs. I think its about 200wpm. Would need to check though

So when he was meant to say "clear to land" he gave them the next instruction for that aircraft on the ground.
