Ms. Hepburn was the best actress of all times, Meryl Streep is more versatile, but Hepburn had elegance and so much glamour, she always will be the best....................
a legend, a star, and above all the best actress, she played every facet in acting -drama,love stories, comedy, suspense, and period pieces, she fit and made everything she did work and entertaining, not many actresses can do that...she will be missed and remembered in her fantastic body of work that she left us....
Although I agree with the other comments of the likes of Meryl Streep or Cate Blachett etc presenting this award, Julia Roberts was a personal favourite actress of Katharine Hepburn.
I'm sorry, i don't understand this kind of acting... I mean, for my she's to fake and she exagerate every move, I guess I don't understand this kind of acting, that's all.. all I know is that Maryl Streep and Cate Blanchette are my fav actress ever...
My gosh I have goosebumps all over - never realised how much I miss the great Katharine Hepburn. She was the very best. No one in my opinion could truly match her talent. She was one of a kind.
BTW - Does anyone know the music at the end of the tribute?? It's breathtaking!
She was a great lady and a great actress. But was she ever a truly happy and fulfilled lady? I don't thinks she was, because she was never able to have Spencer Tracey, and they were in love, right?
The Great Kate won four Oscars but none of them were for her best performances. She could just have handily been awarded for "Alice Adams", "Holiday", "The African Queen", "Summertime" and, especially, "A Long Day's Journey Into Night".
@jckfmsincty No, I do think the Oscar for Golden Pond and especially the one for Lion In Winter were deserved. Her performance in Lion in Winter, to me, is the best female performance recorded on film. But I do agree her first two should rather have been for any of the films you mentioned. "Alice Adams" and "Summertime" being my personal picks :)
They had Julia Roberts present this award because Katharine Hepburn loved Julia Roberts, thought she was very talented and said so more than once. When Audrey Hepburn was given a Lifetime Achievement award in 1994 she sent Julia to accept on her behalf because she too loved Julia, thought she was very talented and would be a big star. You mad?
The song playing in the beginning when Julia walks out is "Julia" by the Beatles on the White Album. It was sung by John Lennon as a tribute to his mother, Julia Lennon.
@NummiSoldier I'm not sure the title, but the words are, "It's a gift to be simple, it's a gift to be free. It's a gift to come down where you ought to be...To be in the valley of love and delight." It might be, "In The Valley Of Love And Delight."
@lolaalex59 No. You're wrong. I listened to Julia and it sounds nothing like it. I know "In The Valley..." I sang it at school, and was singing it along with this clip, note by note.
@NummiSoldier The song is "Julia" by the Beatles from their White Album. It was sung by John Lennon as a tribute to his mother, Julia Lennon who died when he was young. It is a really beautiful and touching song.
someone below said Hepburn was best at drama and Streep could do more genres....Kate was known for decades for her comedies- the Tracey films and the ones with Cary Grant., Kate had many hits as comedies- Phil Story, Woman of the Year, etc...Streep- while a great actress, has rarley been a box office leader- Kate did both
Meryl Streep and Katharine Hepburn, the two most amazing performers to come out of Hollywood. The difference is Hepburn was the best in the history of cinema when it came to drama, but Streep could do all genres better then most of Hollywood put together. And why do the tributes never get standing ovations! She never received an honorary Oscar and never received a standing ovation for any of her wins, it's simply not fair, and she has never gotten the acclaim she so richly deserves.
In her book, ME, Hepburn talks about how much she likes Roberts- says she's the only actress of today who has real star quality....that's probably the reason they chose Julia.
The single greatest actress in Hollywood history. They should have had Cate Blanchett present the tribute! She and Meryl are the only ones that even come close to matching the Great Kate.
@pcalinescu i totally agree with you, but katharine hepburn said in an interview that maryl streep was her least favourite actress of this generation...so i think cate blanchett would have been the best
@Jacksofhearts Yep, Kate would definitely have disapproved of Meryl... dunno why she disliked her so much - personally i think meryl's the second greatest actress after Hepburn. And Blanchett the only current actress with real odds of being in the same category as those two :)
@pcalinescu i totally agree with you except for the fact the katharine hepburn said the meryl streep was he least favourite actress of this generation..so cate blanchett would have been the best choice
@pcalinescu i totally agree with you except for the fact the katharine hepburn said the meryl streep was he least favourite actress of this generation..so cate blanchett would have been the best choice
@pcalinescu Ahhh, yes. Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn have worthy heirs in Streep and Blanchett. Four of the most brilliant actresses in screen history.
@pcalinescu Having Meryl Streep present it would have been an irony given that Katherine Hepburn disliked her. Roberts presented it because she liked her, that's why she sent her to pick up her lifetime achievement award
@1simaddict1 I know Kate disliked Meryl. I'm just saying, Meryl should have presented the tribute anyway as she is the best actress working today, Kate's heir in a way. But the most suitable presenter would have been Blanchett, who in my opinion is next in line after Streep to take on the mantle of best actress in the business. Not to mention, Blanchett later won her Oscar by playing Hepburn. But I guess they didn't know she would win, when this tribute was presented, eh?
@pcalinescu I keep meaning to watch the Aviator......Did you see it? Was it good? I haven't really seen and Cate Blanchett movies and not much of a Meryl fan because I haven't seen many of her movies either. But I do love Death becomes her.
@1simaddict1 I loved "The Aviator", I actually think it's Cate Blanchett's third best role overall, after Elizabeth and Bob Dylan, of course. But despite not looking EXACTLY like Hepburn, she pulled off a masterclass performance. She truly is the new Hepburn, in my view. I wonder what Hepburn thought of Blanchett, I guess Blanchett's career took off in earnest after Hepburn's death, but it's very likely Hepburn might have seen "Elizabeth", and all the roles leading up to Lord of the Rings.
thats what i always wondered....Julia Roberts never struck me as a katherine hepburn kind of actress....if they had to have a current star Jodie Foster or Hilary Swank would have been better choices...but an even better choice would have been one of her costars like Anthony Hopkins or Peter O'Toole
@TIPTON340 Having Meryl introduce this tribute wouldve been awkward given that Katherin openly HATED Meryl, and even went as far to say that Meryls work was "amateur".
Id rather have Meryl associated with a Bette Davis tribute
You know, if Hollywood ever remade Summertime, they'd find some contrived way for her and the Italian guy to end up together.
