  • What I get out of this song is Trent's negative image of the church and how the church tells you how to act, and everything that you have learned is completely wrong, and everything they say is completely right. He is trying to say that they think they are better than everyone else. For the most part, this can be very true; however, from church settings or work settings, there are all sorts of people: some good and some bad.

  • It's fresh

  • NIN is awesome:)

  • More accurately the Republican position.

  • Don'r give a shit about the temperature in Guatemala...I'm sure somebody's going to figure it out..." Unless we cut funding for that...Which we have.

  • haha brilliant an advert popped up before this video, yet it said 13 seconds before it skipped. it glitched out and went straight the song showing the epic power of That Sexy Talent Of Trents :D

  • love this album. trent you are a genius!

  • I wish he made a video for this. Woulda been awesome.

  • This entire album is a masterwork and to me, a very important reminder of who and what we are as human beings. There's some political stuff in here, but it runs deeper than that. I love how he touches on conspiracies and the police state we're entering. People just don't know...thanks to Trent Reznor, maybe a few more people understand what we face as a society.

  • i think it's about christianity, but take it to the next level...thiesm v atheism...now what's this song about?

  • ...THAT part is where I focus on the perspective of us real Christians, because those plain words is what we can sing about ourselves, but WITHOUT the "sarcasm" on our hearts......T.R. probably hears a lot of crap that gets jumbled around within hundreds of conversations about "Jesus/Savior/God/Bible" and he thinks "GEEZ!!!! So that's what 'Christians' are all about". So then he goes on to make a song with a "sarcastic" ton. I really can't think of any other interpretation of the lyrics.

  • @Plowdal1342431 Fun fact: Its a concept album. In the back story to the album, a different action following 9/11 led to a CHRISTIAN EXTREMIST underline EXTREMIST group taking dominion over the United States. This song is sarcastically playing up the extremists who control the "Year Zero America" not you.

  • @Plowdal1342431 ......You think too much.

  • ...THINKS we are acting like. So, as a Christian, I take a very particular thinking approach to the lyrics. I'm simply making fun of the "misguidences" of people who THINK they are Christians, and of whom MIGHT act, do, or SAY these things within the lyrics. The song itself is a sheer spectacle, and should be enjoyed as pure ear candy. And then I SHIFT my mind focus on the part where he says "And it gives us sight, And we see the light, And it burns so bright, Now we know we're right"...

  • ...towards Mormonism, and MAYBE NOT INTENTIONALLY. T.R., for all we know, might have heard some people say: "Hey, we're Christians, but black people carry the "mark of God's curse". Black people, with their "color" (darker skin tone, which is actually a blessing from God, all skin colors are) is a "mark that God gave the people as a curse for something. But Trent here is thinking that "Chrisitans" are saying bull crap like this, so technically this song is sarcasm to Christianity and what Trent

  • HI EVERYONE, I AM A REAL CHRISTIAN HERE!, just so you know. What T.R. is trying to say here is SIMPLY this: Trent is being "sarcastic" (in his tone of the singing tune and even in between the lines of the lyrics) as to what religions such as "Mormonism", for instance, is saying, and what TONS of OTHER religions say about God, and how TONS of people mis-interpret the Bible/Christianity wrongly. For example, he uses "Guess you cannot win with the color of your skin", which is a direct reference..

  • Look at all these Christian Nine Inch Nail fans trying to convince themselves this song isn't about their religion. You do the same thing with the bible - "Oh the part about God killing that town of people...that's just a metaphor."

  • @WyattsFreakinChannel Well i think they have the right to believe what they want you have a point, why are all these metaphors that take the form of genocide mixed in with the literal stuff? Makes you think doesn't it?

  • Oh! Step into the light! Something can't be right...going to ask you to leave. isGuess You caannot win with the color of your skin, you won't get into the promised land. Just a simple case, you people still don't know your place, you won't be getting into the "Promised Land"!

  • this song is has thought provoking lyrics and can make sense to either the Christian's point of view or the Atheist's point of view. "And His Kingdom come

And Thy will be done" is straight from the bible and "We've just begun

We're the chosen ones" are straight from neitzsche's power to self. (his idea about the perfect race of beings).

  • You guys bring up some interesting points about politcal bullshit but I don't think it has anything to do with politics. To me it's clearly about people who went about converting or trying to convert others to christianity or actually just monotheist religions period. The things they said to them and the way they talked about it. Their absoluteness. "I wouldn't want to be praying to the wrong piece of wood, You should get where you belong, Everything you know is wrong"

  • i really like to see political commentary on such a song as this, very appropriate, and better then talking about depression or suicide... nine inch nails only seems dark because dark was rebellion 18? yrs ago. now that he is famous he speeks against the system..THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE

  • @Idolcruisefix NIN has always spoken against religion and the system, from "Head Like A Hole" to "Heresy" to the "Year Zero" album and so on. That doesn't mean he (Reznor) isn't depressed. What could be more depressing than realizing how fucked up the world really is?

  • I would never tell you anything that wasn't absolutely true,

That didn't come right from His mouth,

And He wants me to tell you.

  • Wipe that look off your face.

  • @fadsmashers It's a concept album. He is singing from the point of view of the elite majority. You need to listen to all the tracks in order to fully understand it.

  • @krazymop Like Capital G he talking about the government.

  • Has anyone listened to the demeaning lyrics in this song? I didn't for about 3 years!!! He is saying that you are gentile pieces of shit and that he is the chosen one. Just saying.

  • @Fadsmashers No, I think you missed it. He's saying "we're the chosen ones". Basically what he's saying is you can be with us or against us (talking to politicians and people of power), but ultimately we call the shots. They're nothing without us.. at least that's what he's trying to make them understand. Not that politicians would listen to his music anyways. When they were younger he was a teenager raising hell and his music taught good kids to rebel. (at least that's what they thought)

  • @MMMNUMNUMS This song is satire - it's from the perspective of these rich and powerful religious political figures. The song's production (esp. the casino-machine samples in the chorus) and the chanting lyrical style suggest that these people worship money and the way it influences society. Consider the chorus:

And it gives us sight (aren't US politicians financially enabling wiretapping?)

And we see the light (worship of the idol)

  • @MMMNUMNUMS (continued)

And it burned so bright (the powerful/religious have consistently sought and attained a lot of it throughout history, while also influencing most governments [and they're the instigators of most wars as well])

Now, we know we're right ("after having it, and bringing all these societal advancements" [although we're on the brink of collapse, so our systems are really just letting us scrape by], "it means we must be on the right track!")

See where I'm going with this?

  • @Soupstorm I like where you are going with that. After further review it seems to be more about the sense of entitlement that those "people of power" seem to have. Just because they got elected or (in some cases) know the right people they feel they are above the law and frequently test the bounds of law. For instance the John Edwards cheated on his wife while she battled cancer, or Rod "bagofdouche" trying to sell the senate seat.

  • @MMMNUMNUMS no its about our american arrogance , and thinking we are the best and foreigners dont deserve the same rights because they are not the right color, all year zero is an attack on our fucked up society

  • @letsgoforajoyride You could also relate it back to the Calvinist views during the Protestant Reformation during the 16th century. The song talks about their god given rights, and how they are the chosen people. These views were extremely popular among the French and the Scottish during the Reformations,

is this the album he practically did by himself ?

  • @KellehChu Every NIN album is the album he practically does by himself....

  • @KellehChu : all of the music he practically does by himself. Trent likes running it his way. Cuts out all of the unnecessary corners and sews in his own. Which is why he is one of the most respectable musicians alive.

  • with teeth is the rawness, but yall gotta drop props to the fragile. skeet to the schmeg cheese peeps.

  • @cyraxia becauuse the With Teeth album owns them all

  • so i'm glad that it has that twist on it.thats what makes it a true song instead a dumb club song to dance to

  • i love that trent can make a song that sounds like something britney spears would have sung over and just totally make it awesome and dark.that just shows how versatile and open he is.if it didn't hve the lyrics it had people would dance to this in the club lol.

  • there are clubs that play NIN. mostly industrial clubs

  • when i say dance song i'm referring to a song where people just hear the beat and don't pay attention to the words.just a mtv hit song

  • and nin is great to dance, come on man.you know what clubs i'm talking about.THE CLUB,that all the rappers are talking about lol

  • trent reznor is amazing!!!

  • "Guess you can not win, with the color of your skin."?

  • You won't be getting in to the promised land.

  • @AryanAnarchist a reference to the past where darker coloured people were considered evil, and wont be let in to heaven according the the masses of those ages. something in that direction.

  • This song is motherfucking sexy.

  • i agree :D the beat is sexy an funcky ;) an trents voice in this is HOT :D xxx

  • The end track to year zero "Zero-sum" The beat is the same as god given but with the tempo lowered.

  • (God given)

    And he gives us sight

    and we see the light

    and it burns so bright

    now we know were right

  • reznor rocks, join the information war. the industry needs you.

  • still love this song so true

  • I like nin, and this song, what i don't like are the pharisees.

these are the over zealous, over religious, self proclaimed people of god.

They leave a bad taste in everyones mouth and plague peoples ears.

  • amen!

  • This is like a song for BDSM clubs.

  • BDSM??

  • Biometric Dementia Sodomy Men. They're clubs are scary.

  • Bondage

    Discipline

    Dominance

    Submission

    Sado

    Masichism

  • masichism..

  • you are right. Good session music.

  • D= nub

  • IMO this is the best song on Year zero.

  • what has god given?

  • everything including our free will.

  • nothing.

  • they've always been electronic ? and how can you like year zero but not like the band that made it? trent reznor has alot of better shit, though this is a great cd.

  • sounds like 'to my surprise', good band that.

  • fucking love it.

    Trent Reznor is a GOD.

  • *cough*

  • Makes me want to get stoned...

    Good song

  • I would never tell you anything that wasn't absolutely true

That didn't come right from His mouth

And He wants me to tell you.

  • song's about the over religious people who try to force their religion down people's throat

or so i think, it would make sense

  • Actually, this song is about brushing your teeth properly.

  • art is resistance

  • the lyrics is amazing !

  • this is a kick ass song, and yes it is talking about fundamentalist Christianity, or any of the fundamentalist abrahamic religions. So mainstream Christians, breathe easy.

  • free palestine! stop giving our taxes to the zionists!

  • This man is right.

  • Every Year Zero theme gets more powerful on it´s respective live version and this along with Survivalism are the best examples, anyway Year Zero is the best of NIN´s last works, The Slip is good but kinda weak, With Teeth and Ghosts are awesome but Year Zero is simple genius!!!

  • @Hackmoune Hey man dont complain about The Slip, it was free ya know

  • This song is so badass live!!!

  • In Year Zero, "God's Will" is twisted into whatever the government wants. It's sick.

  • you could never tell mojo anything that wasn't absolutley true

  • GOD GIVEN.

  • Wonderful! I love them!

  • i <3 this song one of my fav

  • ah i finaly fully understand the meaning

  • HIGH ON LIFE111 <3 U trentboy

  • This is one of my favorites- I named my rabbit after Trent Reznor, lol. He's brilliant. His music has gotten so much better now that he quit the drugs. I love this guy.

  • That's one talented rabbit.

  • Same melody as The Good Soldier in the verses. Great song.

  • i named my son trent 8 years ago, for one reason. if you think i'm bullshittin, go watch my videos, he's on there, and he's perfect, just like that.

  • i think its fucking awesome >:D

  • I love this song; it's probably my favorite because of the sarcasm. It's really fun to see live, with the gun/cross logo, etc.

  • i know it might be a coincidence, but did marilyn manson/NIN copy that gun gross thing off each other?

  • they were close friends for quite a while so maybe they made it up together or something o:

  • yay let's prance around like sheep. lol

Back ontopic - this song is solid, hard and super

  • GOD IS DEAD.

    AND NO ONE CARES.

  • If there is a hell, I'll see you there.

  • ...Closer is actually my LEAST favorite NIN song. Really don't like it at all. :D I like this song... It's about organized religion telling you if you don't follow along like a sheep, you're going to hell. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Christian, yet I don't go to church(HOLY CRAP YES WE ACTUALLY EXIST)

  • haha yeah i go to a christian high school and they always try to feed us that crap. everybody believes it too, its very unfortunate. if they make the slightest wrong move they think god will send them to hell.

  • i'm in the same boat as you, but when you talk about them believing theyre going to hell for one wrong move, youre actually talking bout fundamentalists, not all christians/catholics/whatever. half the teachers at my school aren't actually practicing catholics.

  • i'm a christian at a school full of mormans that try to force religion on students...i mean..i believe in God and everything..but i think it's pretty fucked up to force religion on someone who doesn't beleive

  • I agree completely! It actually really pisses me off when people try to force religion on someone who doesn't believe..

  • trent...............god given;-)

  • Closer was closer - Ringfinger was Ringfinger - quit comparing previous works to new ones. It is that behavior that pigeonholes artists into being afraid to try something new for fear of losing listeners. This album is simply brilliant and so was the viral marketing that went with it. Trent has grown and is trying to say something so listen. I really hope Trent makes the Year Zero movie he's planning. He is on the pulse of what's happening in the world and I commend him for it.

  • I'm still more partial to "Ringfinger". The first album had the most depth. You listen to it 15 times and always hear something new.

  • I personally find new things in songs from more or less all NIN albums even after multiple listens. I dont think it's really that partial to the first album.

  • " the best of nin will always be closer"...what are you like 15yrs old, theres alot more to nin than closer.

  • the song is awesome. the album is brilliant.

  • u got the wrong artwork

  • great son, but why a picture of the cover from with_teeth?

  • I like the way they mix songs, they use the same rythms in some songs, like this one which starts as My violent Heart. Anyway, the very best of NiN will always be Closer.

  • march of the pigs and piggy are way better. better yet the entire downward spiral album was pure gold. year zero is really good i must agree but the downward spiral remains my favorite.

  • great song
