  • Her music is extremely unique.

  • I'm head over heals in love.

  • 'Who's there?' >_<

    <3

  • OMFG it is Ron Paul in drag

  • It's theater, people. Love it or leave it, that's what she's going for. Do we all have to make sexy faces or look like irrelevant hipsters when we sing? Maybe she doesn't want to be accepted by people that don't love her weirdness.

  • If she were my girlfriend I'd have her call me "honnnney" like that all the time.

  • Man the patterns of her songs astound and confound me!

  • sad person,what goes around ect.ect...

  • jesus christ she's making faces because shes actually feeling the emotions she sings about unlike many other singers

  • Is it just me or does she bear an uncanny resemblance to Ron Paul? Creepy.

  • @JesusHPresley It's just you.

  • what a stunner.

  • This was my first favorite song and performance of her work. First discovered her on Pandora, and then saw her in living color that night she performed this on Jimmi Fallon. Wow!!

  • Her style is as gnarled and fascinating as a bonsai tree. She's grotesque, lyrical, floating, grinding, twisted, hovering, vulnerable, tough - brambles and soothing herbs. She can screw up her face all she wants as long as those sounds keep coming out of it. Love this weird-ass shit.

  • magnificent, magnificent, magnificent

  • Her voice, her appearance, reminds me of Kate Bush.

  • @Tygrychu not wrong there pal. no siree bob. nuh uh. noooo wayy josee. veeeeerry kate bush piano like. mmmhmmmm yepp ahh uhuhhh yess mister oooh yeah

  • @louiecostello

So she can't remind me of someone cause you don't agree? So you are sarcastic AND and ass, sweet deal.

  • @Tygrychu you absolute moron, i was agreeing with you. fuck man, anyone who says she isn't influenced by kate bush has their head up their ass. i mean listen to the rolling piano at like 1.40, that is basically "them heavy people." dunno if shes as good as kate, but shes definitely got the same qualities, amongst her own more unique qualities

  • @louiecostello

i am sorry, i thought you were being ironic, maybe because you used so many expressions :) well good that we can agree on the talent of both JN and KB

  • @Tygrychu yeah i can see why you'd think that... I'm sorry, i shouldnt have been so aggressive in my defence... yeah, they're both bloody brilliant

  • She reminds me a lot of Grace Slick at times. Especially at 2:54. Check out "Lather," "Rejoice" or "Two Heads" by Jefferson airplane.

  • she's not making faces just to be doing it, that's how she shapes the sound of her voice.

  • @leschatsmusicale the shape your face takes doesn't affect the sound too much, apart from potential side effects in the jaw, tongue, and palate. Theoretically it's possible to sing any singable sound from any facial position, excluding the opening of the jaw (and thereby lips, usually) and position of the tongue. I suppose what I'm saying is that she IS making faces just to be doing it, unless she's also under the impression it changes her sound.

  • @EyeoftheYeti the sound and intonation changes with the shape of the mouth. for instance when she pulls her jaw to one side, it drastically alters the sound. have you ever done any singing? if you take voice lessons, or sing in a choir, they will tell you to do things to make the sound different...open your mouth wider, smile while singing, etc. facial expressions definitely alter the sound of the voice.

  • @leschatsmusicale Aye, I'm in my last semester of a Vocal Performance BMus degree, and have done workshops with John Tessier, Benjamin Butterfield and plenty more besides. Altering the position of your jaw horizontally changes very little of your sound. It's the musculature that is activated as a side-effect which adds specific tension, translating into an altered resonance. The same resonance can be achieved without moving the jaw at all. That goes for most if not all of the faces she makes.

  • @EyeoftheYeti I disagree. moving the jaw doesn't just change the musculature, it changes the opening that the sound is moving through...which changes the sound.

  • She is so0o0o attractive, those faces are hilarious, but she is gorgeous<3

  • she isnt good, music yes..preference needed to like this type def, but im sorry this isnt music.....this is bad very bad.....but its music so who am i to pass judgement

  • Wonder if this was written to that drip Andy Sandberg?

  • She's divine, simply divine, you can listen to her albums so many times and still get something new from them. She's just wonderful, one of life's one off's, unique, beautiful.

  • just amazing

  • WTF why does she make those weird looking faces???

  • @PancakeRecipes because her music is SO sexily awesome that she has multiple orgasms while playing. subsequently, joanna newsoms orgasms are as strong are asphysiating strokes. she's THAT good!!!!

  • @PancakeRecipes Because she's beautiful.

  • @CantSeeTheStars She /is/ beautiful... But she does make some funky-ass faces.

  • LMFAO

  • she is so original - that was like a mini rock opera all on it's own - such a talent - love her.

  • яхз это прекрасно

  • Joanna deserves 3mil thumbs up for her own voice.

  • This is the real deal folks. A truly unique voice. Like watching and listening to a brand new creation.

  • True genius.

  • Alice fell down the rabbit hole a landed a bit too hard on her head.

  • This is by far my favourite performance. I love this so much more than the album version!

Her music is like no other.

  • You know you should keep playing piano, but stop singing. :)

  • for christmas, my wife got me a small painting of her head on a deer's body. it's awesome!

  • So punk.

  • Why do people take the piss out of her? You don't know what you're missing, haters.

  • does she sing like that on purpose ?

  • @MISSABBEHHH

Of course not, it's all by accident.

  • Her voice changed so much since her vocal nodules formed and whatnot. Its really interesting.

  • This is feckin' AWESOME!

  • How can somebody be SO TALENTED??!!! my god!!

  • Joanna . Would you ever consider playing the uu meeting house in Chatham ma. ? They need to build their LLRY. They need to Attract a youth base within such an Elderly retirement beach/nature community. It's been hard to keep the young'uns around. Somberly Andrew (

Memphis Andy) diggs. Do some Brenton divination for us. We have s beautiful night sky waiting for you to ride Orion and cassiopia .

  • So beautiful, so talented....

  • I long for the day fifty years from now, when my future grandkids ask me "Memaw, what the fuck!?" and fall in love with her the way i have.

  • @JenievaAnne You know..if you turn Memaw upside down, it sounds like mommy. =)

  • not sure if i like this or not.

  • When my friend, Amber, makes funny faces, they look like Joanna's....She's so sweet!! ^.^

  • Her facial expressions come from tension, and so does all the unpleasantness in her tone. I'm so confused by how I feel about her voice. Is it good or just unique? I'm not sure.

  • @EmeraldSky33 I personally think her voice is beautiful. But more than that it suits her music perfectly - My favourite song of hers is Baby Birch, which has made me cry so many times, and it would not be the same in any other voice.

  • If she didn't make those facial expressions, what would her voice sound like?

  • you guys she clearly cant speak english

  • This lady is absolutely magical.

  • I honestly don't mean this horribly, but she makes the same facial expressions as 'mirandasings 08' on youtube. She is a great pianist!

  • You should see her fuck face.

  • She brings tears to my eyes, and that doesn't happen often.

    Brilliant!

  • So talented and brave :)

  • I didn't know Kate Bush died and came back to life....

  • female version of joseph gordon levitt

  • imagine her in bed....omg...think I just stumbled on the meaning of life

  • Comment removed

  • naaaw she's adorable.

  • dat voice

  • I looooooovee her expressions

  • I love her face after she sings "And I'll be wishing you... well" 4:48 Really convincing ;D

  • Aw, I love at the very end how Mike Myers gives her an extra look and applause.

  • She;s dating Andy Samberg HAHAH

  • Fallon best in late night. Plus he has the fuckin Roots as his house band.

  • She has beautiful ears. <3

  • I'd totally have sex with her... after I married her.

  • the fact that lady gaga is super fucking famous and Joanna Newsom isn't is whats wrong with america :/... lady gaga is just repeating past successful attempts at fame which is the odd, but strangely sexy approach (david bowie, madonna, ect.) but Joanna is pure originality never heard anything like her. fuck that little monster bullshit :p

  • @HarrisAllinBowie sooooo true. at the same time, I love keeping her to myself. I have yet to meet someone in person who has heard of her or enjoys her music as much as I do!

  • @richie0091993 i have not yet met anyone either, but fuck it their missing out not i nor you :p

  • @richie0091993 We are out there!

  • @HarrisAllinBowie The fact that only few people in this world, now or ever, will get Joanna Newsom is what is wrong with human beings, and that will never change.

  • @HarrisAllinBowie First of all, I like Lady GaGa... A lot. She is very musically talented. Joanna Newsom is also talented as well, but honestly, I think it's the way she uses her voice. Her songs are good and she's very talented, but the things she does with her voice are just unnecessary-- and not in a good way.

  • @bunnybitchtits yes i agree not in a good way, but in an innovative way. you dont see gaga being innovative david bowie was doing the shit shes doing way before her! the only difference is bowies voice is better!

  • @HarrisAllinBowie Lady GaGa is innovative as well. Just because she's mainstream doesn't mean she can't be unique. I've heard people bitching about how she's copying so many people-- make up your minds. Who is she copying? She's not copying anyone. She draws inspiration from people. Lady GaGa is very talented and she sounds good, hence why she's famous. Her voice is appealing and her visuals are aesthetically appealing as well. Joanna Newsom is very unique and innovative, but t

  • @HarrisAllinBowie o be honest, if she would quit trying to do all those odd things with her voice and just try to sound good, she'd be a lot more popular. People want to listen to pretty things... I'm just saying. She's very unique and her music is great, it's just sometimes she goes overboard...

  • @bunnybitchtits no i disagree! but you and i are individuals and entitled to our own opinions (no matter how dumb they may be).

  • @bunnybitchtits and shes copying david bowie and her voice is really starting to sound like madonna's type of singing. i admit her second album was very good but other then that shes totally conformed to now a days kids taste.

  • @HarrisAllinBowie I actually think she sounds way different. Her first two albums were poppy as Hell and she was getting herself out there. Now she's starting to sound really different in my opinion. Born This Way is my favourite album from her, but The Fame Monster is my second favourite. I feel like she's becoming more original, but everyone has their own opinions. ^.^

  • @bunnybitchtits the only song that sounded poppy on the fame monster was telephone (i fucking hate beonce or how ever you spell that shitty artists name lol). but all in all it was her best and most unique in my opinion. you listen to punk music ms bitchtits (was that name from the jay and silent bob movie btw?)

  • @HarrisAllinBowie Actually, it's a name my ex gave to me 'cause my nickname is Bunny. ^_^ And I listen to all sorts of music. A little bit of punk, but not a little bit because I don't like it, just because I haven't gotten a chance to hear a lot of it.

  • @HarrisAllinBowie well i would disagreed with you and said the need to stamp every other country in the world to death probably is, then i let the song play. i cant say i agree now, but im definitely struggling to say i disagree!

  • @louiecostello just listen to the music brother. let the music make our souls come into agreement :p

  • My god, I love you so much

  • best thing i've seen so far. ever.

  • shes such a genius it's almost unbearable

  • She is so amazing.

  • oh man

  • Incredible. I'm in love with her.

  • I love her facial and vocal contortions! Original.

  • Was holding back tears since the first note left her lips.

    Sublime. A true artist.

  • Sos tan linda Joanna! Amo esta canción!

  • Even just her words are some of the finest poetry, almost Nabokov-like, but with her musicianship she's spectacular.

  • she so reminds me of this lady I work with...the voice, expressions the pixie-ish cuteness. Its like her twin, only this lady is a lot older.

    Very endearing.

  • @joeygsmom Can I have this lady's number??

  • @Verichai shes 51 and married ;-)

  • You know, considering how she seeks to achieve an over exaggerated vocal sound the faces are going to be inevitable.

  • the things I would do to her :(

  • Oh my god. Is she beautiful...

  • Joanna, Ryan and Neal are flawless, as always.

  • FLAWLESNESS

  • WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE FACES SHE MAKES!?

  • las caras que hace son geniales jaja

  • nooooooooooo, que linda que es!

  • Kate Bush est passée par là....

  • it was great, but i wish she would have played a song on the harp instead of piano!

  • @nigelsbrother

piano and harp are equally beautiful

  • it almost as i could marry her...

  • the Dylan-esque line in this song "you give love a little shove and it becomes terror" is a real stand out.

  • God, I love her.

  • What a beautiful women

  • interesting body language afterwards

  • greaaat! she took singing lessons!

  • That was an amazing performance. That is all.

  • I couldn't decide if this was good or bad... but listening to it properly its actually Brilliant!! Her voice cracking adds such character and she's just so original and unique.

  • What a beautiful woman with her weird faces.

  • she makes such weird faces <3 <3 long live joanna newsom.

  • BREATHTAKING!!

  • This is a good interview... if it isn't already on anyone's Suggestions right thurr>
