  • Dr. Breen is a puppet. A mere instrument by the Combine, a mouthpiece for propaganda and outright lies. Don't get me wrong, the guy is a brilliant public speaker with a highly advanced vocabulary and indeed - a master of rhetoric. However, none of that detracts from the fact that he's a self-preserving jackoff who refuses to admit that the Combine occupation is ultimately dooming mankind rather than save it.

And are you really going to feel sorry for a video game character, a villain at that?

  • @NicholasGeschke just like usa occupies iraq, afganistan and libya etc.

  • R.I.P DR.BREEN :(

  • i want dr breen back!! i wish he didnt die :(

  • love the vid, hate breen. :)

  • I like how he get's more and more desperate in his attempts to sway Gordon's resolve as he gets closer, it's clear he underestimated him.

  • It would be awesome to have Dr.Breen as a protagonist and Eli Vance + Alyx as the "Administrators".

  • I can't remember. Was he in HL2 episode 1 too? I don't remember him in episode 2.

  • @antdude he was in hl2 e1 but not e2 (cuz the voice of him died)

  • He's the bad guy? Didnt he in a way stop the aliens from killing everyone?

  • @saftydance2 i agree with you. we may question Breen's reasoning and ethics and motives, but his actions played a crucial part in the success of the resistance. without him the earth would have been lost utterly.

  • Breen is pretty convincing but the thing about him is he's naive. Clearly he's dazzled by the superiority of the benefactors, but he's totally trusting that once they have total control and they don't need him anymore, they'll still keep him around. He's a tragic fool.

I miss some of the characters from HL1 like the einstein scientist who was hilarious at points.

  • Breen does make some excellent speeches- but he's blind to the suffering of the people of Earth. That, and he's an arrogant jackass who claims that the Resistance is futile and will lead to oblivion. Clearly, he doesn't see that the Combine fears Humanity- their defeat in City 17 showed that their much vaunted "Universal Union", is a complete and total crock of shit.

  • All those little nuggets of truth in Breen's speeches make him one of the best villains EVER.

  • @balrogthane Yeah it really makes you consider what it is you are actually hoping to achieve and why you are doing it (very deep, very meta. lol) Which is what sets HL2 aside. Theres a sort of tragic irony to the whole thing. Although you feel you are on the "right" side, after a while you realize that all players in the game (the resistance, the combine, the zombies) are equally hapless. There are no grand plans or naratives, no one seems to know where they are going. Bit pretentious?...

  • 4:54 That's not fair, Gordon's a mute!

  • Interesting is it not, the only place on the face of the earth with serious rebellion is in the region surrounding the primary citadel yet Breen allows information on the failure of his legions to spread amongst is supieriors when he controls the transference of it in the local overwatch. The Universal Unions "Advisors" are contained within that structure and receive their intelligence from Breen then take it to the Combine Overworld but can he not just lie to them or misinform? Why be honest?

  • @davedavedaveannoy1 advisors have telepathic abilities, probably they would have detected a lie

  • I love the one at 4:50 because it's so true and can apply to so many video game heroes.

  • Half-Life 2 has arguably the best writing in a video game ever.

  • I'm sure everyone who has played Half-Life 2 has stopped at least once to just take what Breen says into consideration. I mean, he's pretty convincing. If I were in Freeman's position I don't know how I would resist simply giving in to such convincing arguments.

  • @jShazBOT Ya dude, While I was rewatching these today he did a good job convincing me. I hope that doesn't shine too poorly on my character though. The context of the game really shined to me, breen and the "transhumans" are trying to convince the combine that humans are worthy of saving. Yet you as freeman are going through killing them all. In fact we never killed any "intelligent" aliens, only modified humans. The 7 hour war only lasted 7 hours, they could have finished the human race.

  • @joecrow24

If they were able to defeat the well-organized and well-trained militaries of the world powers, then how come they were defeated by a ragged band of physicists and rebel rabble? Seeing how a minumum of 3 well-aimed rockets can kill a strider, my guess is that a single cannon shell from an M1A1 Abrams tank could easily blow off half of a strider's carapace in a single shot. I think that a single one of those tanks guarding a street could wipe out a regiment of 12 striders.

  • @Blasphemisaurusaoe3 I agree but the combine race itself never participated in the 7 hour war or in the conflicts of Half Life 2, where you only encounter the "transhumans", people who have willingly turned to the Combine, that's why they could be beaten by rebels. The 7 hour war was supposedly fought by a different race of aliens under combine control. And if that race failed, they would send another to do the job. I doubt humanity could have faced them and come out of it clean.

  • @impaler009

Nontheless, Breen is still a deluded facist moron.

  • @Blasphemisaurusaoe3 yeah but striders have more deadly weapons and we dont know how many they send and we dont know if they used shield technology

  • Breen's First name is Wallace?... He's an idiot with a stupid name.

  • Pity one can not join Combine.

  • 4:50 that one just hurts

  • @QX1138

I know right, breen hurt my feelings )':

  • Gordon created hope and strung together a few ragged survivors to overthrow a malefactor that nearly wiped out and has enslaved humanity. Breen was a facist, a propaganda-belching fool who speaks in hypocrisy. He called the Combine 'our benefactors' and told humanity that they could somehow 'reach the stars' in a state of oppression and malnourishment, where the human was as lowly as a headcrab. Humanity was more than capable of defending itself and reaching the stars, then Dr. B surrendered us.

  • nice

  • should put subtitles in...

  • When Breen asks "What is it exactly that you have created?" I just wanna reach into the game and bitch-slap Gordon for not shouting "Hope!" back at Breen

  • Rip Robert Culp. You will be missed

  • Robert Culp, the voice actor for Dr. Breen, died after falling in an unnamed Los Angeles park. He was 79.

    :(

    He will be missed!

  • Indeed he will be, and for those who got the message via Steam yesterday, Valve also said that they fortunate enough to be able to work with him.

    R.I.P., Robert Culp

  • Untofrtunatly Robert Culp has died :(

  • what has gordon freeman created? HOPE!

  • I love the gong which announces the Breencasts. The perfect sound for introducing a tyrant like Breen, a man with such overwhelming power. It conjures up thoughts of Pharaohs. Of Emperors. Of... Administrators...

  • @ghanamuscle2000

That was a pretty damn impressive use of vocabulary. I liked the pause at the end, implying the search for a proper term for something so vast.

  • @ghanamuscle2000 I don't think that's a gong. Probably the striders! But the whole background atmosphere adds so much to the breen casts. I can't stand hearing those clips taken from the files played bare.

  • well, I apologise if this disapoints you, but no one finds this funny.

  • This game seems cool, I have to check it out

  • get the orange box, the best deal ever!

  • believe me, friend. If these Breencasts are enough to get you interested, you should definitely check it out.

  • Ah why didn't you include the "You need me" line?

  • I Appreciate the info :D...

Not sure what (if anything plausible) you're referring to exactly...

    Elaborate...

  • Well it's technically not a breen cast but all the lines he says from the time you reach the top of the citadel to where he falls.

  • Yes, but that's Breen in person :)...

And as I mention at the beginning of the video - I only recorded BREEN's broadCASTS via monitors and intercoms... *hint* *hint* :D...

But I'll see what I can do... Maybe I'll record a bonus video with the overall most memorable Breen moments. So thanks... You might've just given me a premise for my next video, we'll see :D...

  • @Matuxmatux Breen read a very long speech to Gordon when he was trying to stop him from escaping. The speech ended with "YOU NEED ME!!!" when he was falling to his death.

  • @ProtonFilms Yes, I'm aware of that :D...

  • @Matuxmatux

In the Energy Core, the last time we ever hear him speak in it.

  • A "rogue physicist". Perhaps my favorite quote from the entire game.

  • very nice ty

  • what was that thing directly at the end?

  • It was the secret singing vortigaunt from "WATER HAZARD" :D... Google or Youtube it.

    I'm sure you'll find plenty of how-to-find-him material :D...

  • you did freakazoid vidz and you finished that, but why did you diside to make half life vidz?

besides that these are good vidz too. good work

  • The reply to your question is in the comments of the first video :D...

    Cheers!
