Defs in my top 10 all time australian hits !!!! Btw, just in case you are interested Max Q is the zone where enormous forces squeeze the Space Shuttle about 30-40 seconds after lift off.
Its makes u wonder its 2012 and this song was released in 1989 when I was a teen. Listening to the lyrics nothing has changed got worse! Anyway great song!
As stated in Just a Man by Tina and Patricia Hutchence, Michael Hutchence would check into hotels under a pseudonym. One pseudonym was "MR. PUSSYCAT" after I came up with the idea for the all girl group and made up the songs for The Pussycat Dolls. This is also where Kurt Cobain's obsession with dolls came from. I am mentioned in the INXS song Reckless Ways..."I’ll take a chance with Amy, might look good on the floor"
I was inspired to write Elegantly Wasted from Def Leppard's song "Wasted" from the On Through The Night album. It was Joe Elliott who discovered me in Alabama on May 15, 1983 at Boutwell Auditorium while they were on tour in the US promoting the Pyromania album. Mutt Lange who produced Aussie band AC/DC's album brought the Australian band INXS to meet me in June '83 while they were in the US and had some down time.
@cun4a I know it isn't INXS. This was my 3rd CD (House of Love and The Charlatans debut being the other two). I'm just saying that I like that despite not liking INXS (which is a good thing for Max Q I think)
How I miss Michael Hutcherce more and more each day. Michael became Australia's best poet-he in the tradition that produced, among others-Lord Byron, Henry Lawson, Ned Kelly and Bon Scott. The angry hook "Whether it's God or the Bomb/It's just the same/It's Only Fear Under Another Name" is truer now than when Hutchence wrote this precient Aussie Prayer. Way of the World is a Very Sad Song! Rock in Peace Hutch! You Are Not Forgotten mate brother!
I can definitely see why this album didn't go over that well when it was released, it's sound is more suited to the mid- to late 90's & I am amazed that I didn't hear more of it in the club scenes then & now. This song is definitely poignant even 20+ years later & will continue to be so; as long as people refuse to open their eyes, minds, & hearts in acceptance of the wondrous variety born out of the human spirit.
@BlueKyne not only is this song relevant now, this video is kind of eerie to watch...especially the beginning with the people racing out of the Staten Island Ferry building. btw, i think this song is relating to the Cold War and how the government and media attempt to pump us full of fear in order to sustain the world economy (the more afraid we are, the more we "consume").
There isn't an organized religion in the world that hasn't had followers massacre others in the name of holy righteousness, & don't forget that most probably 99% of human history is comprised of controlling/governing institutions that deliberately indoctrinate the populace to follow blindly & to target the original thinkers for persecution & ridicule.
@BlueKyne I always find it quite interesting, when an artist makes an anti war/government song and usually in a short matter of time, the artist who sings it either dies in weird circumstances or his/her career goes down the drain by some ridiculous revelations. And it happens to actors too. Interesting, ha??
Hutchence Rocked!! Get this album-it's awesome and was groundbreaking (to me at least - always a fan) This was a little 'band' (solo project) he did with Ollie Olsen in Australia early 90's and he funded it too. One of the best tunes ever....but so under rated and under played. I've been playing it since day 1 and hoping it would get covered by someone new!! (looks like I'll have to do it myself) Powerful lyrics and delivery - thanks Michael - you are missed!! Cheers to Love&Peace
Your an idiot, this song was just spin off from an INXS b side that Michael wrote for the band but never made the cut,to compare it to that red headed self indulgent clown Rose is an insult!!!!!
So fantastic. Michael's voice is just incredible. The song is amazing and says so much. Though I see anger and pain in his eyes, they are so beautiful in this video.
Ollie Olsen, used to work in a record store called 'Collectors Corner' on Swanston St Melbourne. Quiet guy, hippy looking. He would come to my fathers cafe on his lunch breaks which was 3 doors up just like a normal customer. I only learnt he was in Max Q through my friends in high school who would talk about this 'new band'. When i asked Ollie next time i saw him, he just smiled and nodded. No rockstar reply or big noteing himself. That was Ollie. Pity, they dont make music like this anymore.
@wildpanthera ..And Bush is an alien life form or something?
And the wars have been started by Bush's orders. Of course not EVERY war,but he initiated the ones in Afghanistan and Iraq.
And I know you can have a lifelong discussion over what has caused all this mess(if you go way back in time),but you will never find the answers. There will always be people who want to start a conflict or war. I think it is human nature, and some people are not able to surpress the urge to fight.
Still my favorite rock song in terms of lyrics and message. Nice fadeout image of the musicians on a bench with the twin towers in the background. Uncanny.
9/11 - It makes sense now. I miss Michael Hutchence... Boo hoo. INXS will never be the same without him. He was taken too early, but he was wise back even then- though he had another facade/aka in MAX Q.....
@CyberBlondeY2K what a class tune!, ive got this on cassette single, and it should have been a big hit here, yeh i miss hutch, i have great memories of seeing inxs here in england, and in australia. At a Q+A session last year, Ollie Olsen (Michael's partner in Max Q) said that the reason the album hadn't been reissued is because of legal issues with Michael Hutchence's estate. That's why you won't find this on iTunes either. Maybe one day...
I love this song...even though my fiancee always gave me shit about loving it. I still love it. Micheal Hutchence was brilliant with this project, if you ask me.
While INXS were undoubtedly great musicians, this work Michael Hutchence helped create in the Max Q (project) was without doubt his most pertinent and powerful. Right up until the exit of George W Bush, this work showed no sign of being dated. And it will be just as pertinent, when next, the American Tories (republicans) seize office.
i still get goose bumps when the last verse kicks in, even after all this time, fantastic song! infact fantastic album! one of my favorite albums ever made
not a bad choice, be interesting to see if he can capture the raw emotion, he tends to 'oversing' imo; this needs understatement like the way Michael did it.
I wonder Davey Hovak from AFI could do it justice?
I think this is probably the greatest protest song of the eighties. Michael was a very deep thinker. As someone who has been made very sick by work related stress, I can really identify with the line " and those who hold the gun want you to work fast and die young" Its lyrics are very profound , He sung it so powerfully and it has a great tune. Its extraordinary.
I LOVE how he shows THE WORLD TRADE CENTERS in the Last shot!! I also love how he shows REGAN and his VP GEORGE H BUSH (who was CIA HEAD before VP) and OLIE NORTH (Sold Guns to CONTRAS to help free hostages in IRAN)! They were released the day Regan was sworn in! The video also shows a video of JFK, and then the words CIA poped up! Very PROFETIC! To bad they didn't make the conection to OIL! MAX Q way a head of its TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a great song.. to put this in context.. MH was still one of the biggest pop stars in the world, inxs one of the most popular.. and he did this "weird" little dance record and didn't put his face on it. but what a powerful song.
Huh? A totally different song. Why cause Hutch and him have a similar sound in this? So do MANY musicians of that era. This song is a classic! And it's uch better then The The - infected. So Hutch did it better. Sorry. YOU move along.
what i meant to say is WOW. first saw clip in 1997 and it made me shiver, it made me shiver in 2001 after seeing THOSE buildings in the last seconds it made me shiver again and again . not any crackpot/god fearer /anything but its going on now, then it was as well aparrently, now it is???
This song is cool...I like Michael's vocals on this album (Max Q)...the lyrics are great and very insightful! I miss Michael Hutchence, he was an awesome talent. I have to say that his original band (INXS) will never be the same without him. RIP Michael.
One of the best lyrics and most relevant songs ever written IMO. Despite the way he attacks religion it is worth noticing the use of the term 'corporate snakes' which is obviously inspired by the bible. Proof if need be of how deep religious concepts are embedded in society, education, ourselves, our subconscious and how hard it is to de-program ourselves and distance ouselves from this nonsense.
Hutchence used to be a bit of a punching bag in the media for a few reasons... though, in this one song, he makes himself invicible in the eyes of those who would care to seek the truth in this life...
I love political INXS songs (Black & White, Jan's Song etc) but Michael belts this one out with such raw passion - it's like he got to spread his wings on this side project. RIP Michael, you are one of the most passionate and talented singers
I was living in Illinois when this came out. I remember calling the local radio station and asking them to play this song. They said it was too progressive and that they don't have it. I remember MTV playing it for a short time and then it just disappeared. Isn't that what they (ignorants) do with the truth, try to make it disappear. Michael you are sorely missed. It especially sucks because your daughter is growing up without you : (

I loved this song when i was younger and the words are even more meaningful now than they were back then.

I didn't even know Hutch sang this and always loved it. Wow! And I am a huge fan of Inxs. Here is where You Tube helps artists !
MediaPointEnt 2 years ago
Huh? A totally different song. Why cause Hutch and him have a similar sound in this? So do MANY musicians of that era. This song is a classic! And it's uch better then The The - infected. So Hutch did it better. Sorry. YOU move along.

it's just a shame hutchence wasn't as in touch with himself as he may have been with this song.
finding yourself is everything in this world and michael never did.

And this video was such a great segue with Philip Glass' "Pruit Igoe." Too bad MGM made 'em take that one down!

It sounds like shit here! But, this is such an awesome song off a great album!
