Very sad that the Olympics have to be soured by things like this. When I first heard about this back in 1996 I thought of the 1972 hostage that occured at the Olympics.
I remember I was 12 years old when this terrible thing happened. I was up north with my family in Michigan camping at Platte River. Seeing the news on Television was terrifying.
woah! i was there but i was only 1year old i asked my mom about it and she said that they got SO many phone calls from the rest of my family to see if we were ok
Man, I remember that night. We hauled ass out of there as soon as we heard the explosion. Went straight to Marta then to payphones to call our parents to let them know we were ok.
It was initially blamed on a security guard whose quick response saved lives: Richard Jewel. Jewel was on it so fast - investigators thought he planted the bomb. They were wrong - LC
It was 2 days before my birthday. I turned 8 on the 29th. I lived in Atlanta for the majority of my life and this just rocked everyone I knew -- we were all glued to the TV in shock and afraid to go out and do anything for a few days.
Like the reporter, I had just come from the park no more than 10 minutes before the blast. My car was only two blocks away and I was well on my way home when the blast happened. I had no idea until I got home and turned on the TV and saw what had happened. It was awful, just awful.
In cruel irony, Richard Jewell was a hero here, reporting the suspicious package and moving people away from the area. I'm convinced he saved lives. I'm glad he finally got an apology.
i first head of this on "the FBI case files". tragic...

My sister worked at the Murphy Police Dept. when Rudolph was brought in, and she was the one who booked him.
Shes told me a lot of stories about some of the things he said to her while he was in his holding cell, and while she was booking him. Scary.

You can see marks from shrapnel on a statue close to where the bomb went off.

I think its sad how a lot of people say that Atlanta was the worst olympics just because of this bomb. They couldn't control that.
I think Atlanta did a great job as host of the Olympics.
