  • "awww...shit."

My exact words when seeing that thing come out

  • this gives a new meaning to ¨ to beat this Evil...we have to...SING¨¨ in epic way

  • True not the greatest film - but Zip's line "we aint evil, are we?" is one of my all time favorites

  • The nose is getting on my nerves......

  • As I looked on in awe, I could think of only one word to summarize the ending. Quoth Nathan Explosion, "...metal."

  • just ordered my dvd cant wait for it to ship

  • zip=hero

  • @swedichboy1000 Zip didnt die.

  • Pwned

  • Classic!

  • Mok summons the creature because he's a narcissistic megalomaniac. His record sales are dropping and people are beginning to think of him as a has-been. He feels that people no longer believe in or appreciate his "magic". So he wants to summon the demon to essentially prove his magic and that he's great and everyone else is beneath him. He's just an evil crybaby. I always thought that was pretty well explained in the movie.

  • I remember this scene!! Haven't seen it in close to 30 years!! The rat character in the end looks like John Waters (the thin moustache must be it).

  • They dont make music like this anymore....

  • ONe thing i loved about this movie were the triplets....though the third one seemed to be forgoten at the end of the movie. Zip who never really was evil and just doing what his brothers because they were family in the end sacrficed his life to do what he knew was right. He brother still doesn't learn this and is only interested in revenge. Interesting dynamic and over thought i know.

  • lol Wow I remember this, Fritz The Cat, and Hey Good Lookin'

    (ROFL Crazy Shapiro)

  • Question: Is it ever explained why our main villain wanted to summon this thing?

  • @WikiSorcerer now that you mention it, i don't think it is.

  • @WikiSorcerer I think it's the generic reason: To rule the world.

  • @ilikethecoke 'How would that work' me thinks?

  • @WikiSorcerer Maybe it's where if you bring it to this dimension it does your bidding as grattitude.

    I'm just guessing.

  • @WikiSorcerer He thought that he would be able to control it to help him rule the world. Its is never explained fully but then again doesn't need to be.

  • Ya know, when I first sw Omar, I thought he would be voiced by Kevin Bacon.

    I dunno why, though.

  • The last song that everyone likes is called Send Love Through by Deborah Harry and Robin Zander

  • Is it me, or does Mok remind you of Tim Curry as a sweet transvestite

  • @vancepar08 In one of his ealier outfits in the movie he reminded me of David Bowie.

  • I laughed the first time I saw Mylar pop up here. He WOULD take advantage of this.

  • 0:41 best....scream...EVA!!

  • what the hell..

was he saying before toad threw him in the star

it was liek alvadera ala alvedara ala ala

  • for a movie that came in 1983...the animation is pretty cool

  • Apparently, the demon cannot stand this kind of music. ^^

  • These are the shows of the 1978-1980s. You see people This is what shows were like. Now look at the crap you see today. Now think about it. The people in this world have NO talent NO creativity NO desire of Action. Everyone only thinks about 2 things. Paying bills and getting laid! THATS The problem we have with our world now. Im not saying sex is bad but when you base your entire life around it. You become pathetic!

  • Dont talk now....talk to me!

  • I loved this movie so much as a kid, I finally bought the Collector Edition DVD. SO WORTH IT!!!

  • Poor Zip.

  • Wow. I remember my brother letting me watch this when my parents were not home when I was a kid. I think that blonde cat chick is why I find anthropomorphic women so attractive

  • whats the name of the song in the end?

  • Anyone reading this, just to give you guys a heads-up: Rock & Rule (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] will be released on September 28, 2010 - amazon.

  • @shivnz That is AWESOME! Do you know if it'll be the original or the other version?

  • > . > When I first saw the picture for this video, I thought it was a kids movie. But now I see I was vrey wrong. o - o

  • To quote BDK: "What the shit is this fuck?" and why is it so awesome?

  • If you read the beginning of the movie everyone are dogs, cats and rats......

  • This movie is up there with heavy metal..

  • Eighties Movie Awesomness!

  • Destroyed by rock and roll! Yeah, this was an 80's movie wasn't it? Lol I can see why people like it though.

  • The character design makes me think of Goofy movie...hmm.....Angel and Max...has potential!

  • aaww poor sam T_T

(i wish someone would do a fanfiction of this movie)

  • I think this movie is a classic. I admit i was only 8 when it came out but as a teenager seeing it i appreciated it for what it was. I love this movie being a die hard musical fan. It's in my top 5 of my favorite musicals. Xanadu being #1 of course hehe. Appreciate the post. Love it

  • I thought Angel and Omar were dogs or cats.

  • @zzzzizzzz1 There are 2 versions of Rock & Rule. In one Omar and Angel had tails. I assume they were cats or rats of some sort hehe. But yes zzzz you must have seen the version when they had tails :)

  • gotta love mok's expressions at 2:45 and 3:03, lol first he's like "oh how cute she's trying to stop me" then he's all " oh good grief she's singing about love to stop a demon how cliche".

  • @yakkityshmakkity

Oh, yeah; Mok's expressions are the best part. That eyeroll is classic. I also like his expression when he realizes that the singing is actually *working.*

  • Wish I could find the incantation part, where she is forced to sing it up. Thank you for sharing this!

  • @darkartiste78 You can find all the songs if you search on Google "Rock & Rule Homepage" (: If that website isn't working I can send you the song.

  • Angel and Omar were singing together in the concert when the devil and Mok were defeated.

  • Actually their mice/rats.

  • Is their a video on YouTube with the song whole and uninterrupted? I just can't get it out of my head.

  • I own my own copy of this movie.. on my Zune, so on long trips i bring it along and watch this classic badass movie

  • Man, this is /amazing/.

I have GOT to find a copy of the whole film.

  • You can get the DVD on Amazon my friend. It was released just a few years ago.

  • If I had the ability, I would love to upload the background music. (Which is often never released.)

  • 0:40 LOVE that scream!!!

  • You see more of Tode and Zip in the movie then Z-Z

  • IF that electric storm hadn't happen, Mok wouldn't have had the enough still power.

  • awesome cartoon!! it puts the pieces 2gether of the original Mok version!!

  • WOW! It's been 25 years. I didn't know that

the song had a reprised version.

Heard it was both Deborah Harry AND

a Cheap Trick member for this version...

    thanks....

  • I would love to find this song.

  • its Robin Zander

  • @RonaldVaughan It is indeed!

  • i own this. why didn't they make a soundtrack?! man i want this on my phone so i can rock out while i work!

  • There were legal matters that held up a soundtrack release. I understand there is a company trying to release one.

  • Zander is a bad ass~

  • I think schizoidboy really nailed it. I was twenty in eighty-three but don't remember it being around. I was about 24 when I saw it on cable, was the cartoon network around then. If you weren't a Disney movie it was hard to get artistic credibility as an animated movie. The whole comic movie thing was decades away.

  • this was the first actual animation film I ever watched when I was about 14 it has been awhile but I loved this movie. I looked for a long time to remember what it was called finally I found it yay for me.

  • 0:41

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Fuck that part's awesome.

  • a classic that was under-appreciated and over looked as far as animated films for mature audiences goes. if only they had marketed it better.

  • if only

  • I think the problem was that it was released at a time when cartoons were either Disney or Fritz the Cat and anything in between didn't get noticed, you didn't have films like this until the anime craze got started in ernst.

  • Gotta admit. Dog girl Angel is smoking.

  • I thought she was more feline than canine

  • @OneFilmLover I think she is a cat. and Omar is supposed to be an anthropomorphic rat.

  • You know how they got that crazy effect on the demon?

Cows brains. Yep. Smeared over one level of the Multiplane camera.

  • God every time they duet out of nowhere my body tingles. Freaking amazing.

  • Same here. I always find myself snapping my fingers on cue whenever Omar jumps in.

I also love his guitar-brandishing scream.

  • I agree shivnz. Just like Highlander, hardly what you call the best, and definite room for improvement, but it has that legend feel to it if you know what I mean.

  • I remember watchin this in the 1st grade....it was bitchin....still is in a nostalgic sort of way...

  • "One heart, one soul, but no one".

All I could say when I first saw this was

"Uhh...idiot, those are two people. And they're obviously in love. I think that proves your computer's point."

  • To be fair, he'd just been thrown into a Portal that was to consign him to a Hell Dimension, clear thinking wasn't his top most priority at that current time. ;)

  • When asked who the voice was for the computer, it said No ONE could return the beast, and he figured NO ONE at all could return it. He never considered that no one person meaning a duet etc could return the beast. she he had a silly wtf moment.

  • xD Silly wtf moment. You make m giggle.

  • By the computer saying no one, he never considered that it meant no one person.

  • am i the only one who gets chills when omar first shows up and screams? AND when he starts singing with angel?

  • There is so much more to Omar than meets the eye. >D

  • it's bad when you have a little fantasy crush on a cartoon character.

  • What? That...had absolutely no connection to my previous statement.

  • Completely agree 2Cents, definitely very Heavy Metal, way more Heavy Metal than Heavy Metal 2000 was.

  • The biggest reason why I love this movie so much (even more than having Cheap Trick provide most of the soundtrack) is that it always seemed to me that it was a lost chapter in the movie Heavy Metal. Like Don Bluth submitted something for the movie, then it got rejected at the last minute. Still a classic. NO. UNCLE. MIKEY!!!!

  • were can i watch the hole movie?

  • I think the reason this film wasn't well received was because it was released long before the anime growth, where you had different writing and characters then the traditional Disney based animation.

  • When Omar starts singing with her and the beast reacts to it sharply, I nearly started crying. It's beautiful.

  • It's seriously such an underrated masterpiece. The animation's why better than all the other American animated films today.

CG-what? Screw that walking, talking plastic stuff. This is the real deal.

Good thing, Disney's going back to traditional stuff very soon.

  • I don't think that this is a Disney production. I could be mistaken though.

  • Nah, it was made in Canada by Canadians. They seem to have a liking for anthropomorphic cartoons, the other major animal character they made was Arthur.

  • And why the heck am I being thumbed down? I said it was a good movie, underrated doesn't mean crap, and it's true, CGI sucks.

  • Because people are fucktards. I gave you a thumbs up because I agree.

  • That's nice of you, thanks.

I think films like this need to be circulated around a bit more, to hopefully engage more artists into producing animation for adults in the West. Nowadays, the demographic is primarily aimed at 8 year olds.

  • @dancingskull01 I couldn't say i agree, but I do miss the good old animation

  • @dancingskull01= It doesn't suck. It's just been abused by the industry. Still 2D will always be Number 1 with me. If it wasn't for the stupid suits, this film would have been a bigger hit.

  • @dancingskull01 Cuz people nowadays are r-tards and don't know the meanings of commonly used words.

  • Rock N Rule was inspired by another Nelvana production "The Devil and Daniel Mouse". Same general story, very nicely done.

  • It makes sense that 'no one' can send it back, because there are TWO who can.

  • This cartoon was way head of its time. Brings back so many memories.

  • Yeah, tell me about it. . . I just saw this movie a few days ago, and damn, I was moved! This was made in the, what, 80's? Amazing!

  • mok is gonna give me nightmares he's man scary!!!!

  • I loved this movie when I was a kid.

  • What the heck does Mok say when he's going mad trying to get the Demon back under control from 4:17-4:23?

  • It sounds like he's saying "My devil, my melborne!" or something like that. . . I am 99.999999999 percent positive that I am mistaken however. In the .000000001 percent chance that I'm correct, let me say WOOOOOOOT

  • You get brownies for that. xD

  • I'm pretty sure that I'm wrong though.

  • Does Mok scary anyone else besides me?

  • You know, I can't quite get the full lyrics to the end song.

  • Now for all you'll ever know that you've never seen me

And someday you're gonna show what your one desire means

Now I only set the stage focus lights on me

I make sure the power's on on the scenery

Oh, what will the signal be for your eyes to see me?

Watching offside as I wait just in case you need me

So I still will set the stage, send my thoughts to you

I'm receiving every wave that sent love, sent love through

  • You know, love's not what you think

Too weak to stand on like quick sand in which you sink

Love is anything you make it

How can I let you feel my love

Feel me and still feel free

I mean I have the answers now

    So what?

Oh, what will the signal be for your eyes to see me?

Watching offside as I wait just in case you need me

So I still will set the stage, send my thoughts to you

  • I'm receiving every wave that sent love, sent love through

Now I have revealed exactly why I'm here

I'll be your angel if you wanna see how perfect sharing love with an angel can be

    Alright

  • I first saw this movie when I was 4,. I've looked 17 years for it,. my dad couldn't remember what I was talking about. I get chills when Omar starts singing to and if you guys love this one, try Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards"

  • I think it's because Omar and Angel are true loves, and true loves singing is more powerful than most other types. Also, I have seen "Wizards", great film, but the war scenes could've been edited a bit, they go on too long for me.

  • I love the duet Angel and Omar sing, plus one thing I always liked about this film is how Dizzy had common sense and smarts. Some stereotypes depict fat characters as stupid. You know, I read that all the characters are supposed to be Anthro dogs, cats, and rats, but except for Angel and Mok (they're both cats) I can't tell who's what!

  • man, why would they kill Zip? the comic relief isn't supposed to die!!!

  • Actually I think his name is Zeb and Toad did need a motive to toss Mok through the portal. Still you're right, I wish Zeb didn't die so soon after realizing the truth between Good (Omar) and Evil (Mok),

  • In the original cut, Zip lives. MGM, the original distributor, cut out that part for some reason.

  • Sorry, you're right it's Zip.

  • I still get goosebumps from the scene, even like 20 years later.

  • Same here, dang.

  • hell ya, this movie is all about this scene....

  • I remember when this got play on the TV, HBO I think. I watched it in its entirety with my son and we both thought it was awesome!

  • damn shes hot

  • pity they left out the part where Zip is still alive.

  • In all sincerity this is one of the best animated flicks I have ever seen to date. This is the pride of the Canadian music industry righ there. The ending to this movie is the most memorable I have ever seen and puts all endings to animation movies to total shame!!!!!

  • This is the most badass movie I've ever seen with the most awesome voice acting money can buy

  • Think badass now, go watch the quickening at the end of the first Highlander movie. They traced over the demon animations on to the movie for the final quickening off Kurgen. I saw this movie and thought, where do I know that demon from? This movie is so hardcore they reused its animation for other movies.

  • I had to google search the movie to find the full movie, and even then, the site locked me out about the time this clip, so in essence I got to see it I guess.

  • is the whole movie on i cant find it

  • have not seen that ending or heard that tune for so long, the wonders of youtube, great movie that

  • If any1 can find the lyrics, let me know or post them here on youtube

  • wish i could find this film, its "metalicious" lolol

  • This song is so kick ass! I loved it when it first came out and I love it now! The animation always got to me, though. There is crappy cel animation, next to rotoscoping, next to some really strange 3d effects. Typical of late 70's and early 80's animated movies like this ( watch Heavy Metal and you'll see what I mean). I always wondered how they got the 3d effects.

  • Actually, for the demon screenshots, in the documentary, they said they used cow guts, and smeared it over the screen to make the effect. It's kinda sick, but it worked lol

  • I've always wished they had a soundtrack put out for this movie, sighs.

  • I just love the ending song. I've listened to it a half dozen more times than I've seen movie lol

  • One of my favorites, thanks for posting this. I taped it off the tv years ago, and the tape is on it's last legs. "If I can sing it up, I can sing it back" ranks right up there with my other fav movie lines.

  • Wonder if a good clean version will ever see the light of day?

  • I've only seen a few other clips from the movie, so I have to ask - what happened to Mok's hair?

  • He wears wigs, I believe.

  • Mok was always bald and just had a variety of different wigs.

  • Animation sucks these days.

  • It's movies like this that make me angry towards everything being computer animated these days. Yet if you compare 2d animation from the 80's and 90's to today everything sucks now with all these cartoons being thick black outlined and extremely undetailed and flat characters. Compare new batman to 90's batman and new ninja turtles to old 80's/90's ninja turtles. Compare ren and stimpy to fairly odd parents.

  • Because how fluid animation is, and how many animation errors there are counts for nothing, right? Even a lot of movements in this movie look exaggerated and jerky to me.

  • Well, it's true. Digital does look better. But there are effects and other things that make the old way much better. Just because they've gone digital doesn't mean every cartoon has to have the same art style and what ever else is bad about cartoons these days. It's cheaper to do it Digital, but i just wish the shows of now had the quality they did back in the 90's. Kids don't know what they missed out on. Exaggertated movements and expressions are what make cartoons great.

  • finaly some one i can agree with on the subject

  • well put. :)

  • If you'll read my comment more closely, you'll notice I never said anything about digital animation. I was talking about 2D animation, and how even if older stuff looks more colorful, that doesn't mean there were less animation errors.

  • Damn, if only Rock A Doodle was like this film.

  • Hey, Rock-a-Doodle had pretty darn good animation, and a decent plot. The characters were pretty good, especially the Grand Duke of Owls.

  • UNCLE MIKEEEEEEY!

  • Yea I would love to have the Duet Song at the end.. They both wrote and sung their own song and the they Smashed it together at end without ever having sung or listened to the two together.. So I guess ya say One of First Smash ups and came out great hehehe.. would kill for good copy of it too.. Love Blondie and Cheap Trick.

  • Were going to save the world....

    WITH MUSIC!

  • Seriously, I would kill to have the studio version of the song from this movie. The Deborah Harry only version is great, but the end credit version is so much better.

  • last i heard, the only reason that it can't is the location where the original print of the film was got torched

  • I think it's sad that while the entire movie was pretty good, that ONE scene, where Zip dies.....seemed to be lacking something. Yeah, it was sad, but the guy doing his brother's voice couldn't get very much emotion into the lines.

  • This movie is an example of why you don't do cocaine kids.

  • Canadian.

  • before he gets picked up he is freaking and just babbling but as they brother picks him up he says " you can't do this I am Mok" and then when he goes into the pit he says " the magical one voice one heart one song.

  • Thanks. That had been bothering me since I first saw this clip.

  • "But there is No one!"

  • What is Mok shouting as he's getting picked up? It sounds like 'bebbybehbeh' or something.

  • before he gets picked up he is freaking and just babbling but as they brother picks him up he says " you can't do this I am Mok" and then when he goes into the pit he says " the magical one voice one heart one song.
