I find this version too upbeat for the mood of the song I've grown used to. Hartford's "standard" version is similar to the one Campbell made famous, though Campbell gave it a certain edge.
@VictorianRose7 Was the pick I left on his tombstone still there. Thanks for all your support of John. See you at the Hartford festival in a little over 4 months. I wish everybody that loves his music come to Bean Blossom and celebrate his music.
@johnhotze It seems like there was one there, not sure though--its been a few years since I was there. I can't wait for the festival, I just hope my husband can get the time off from work. :)
John Hardford. A really gerat talent, and for many, discovered too late. There is no one who sounds like him., and I doubt ever will be. Godsoeed John, you are missed.
Glen Campbell had the hit, but Hartford had the gift to pen this incredible song ... the imagery is spectacular ... clothes lines, wheat fields, junk yards ... freedom of the road versus the comfort of home .... not one word is wasted ... this version belongs in a time capsule ... thanks VictorianRose7
I've loved "Gentle On My Mind" for years and there's been many great versions. I've never heard this one before and it's very good. But it been done better. Still, nice to see hear this and John Hartford
I mixed sound for John at the Cheboygan Opera House in Cheboygan Michigan in 1988 and 1989. He was an absolute joy to be around and work with. You smile upon us John.
@VictorianRose7 true sincerely i think elvis didnt sing it that well, for me john hartfords live version is d best followed by dean and the rest can queue up
yes.....this has to be the best ever version of this iconic song....it rattles along.....it's your music America,,,absolutely wonderful....thanks to the genius who posted this...from England.
ahhh okay sweet. and you're right it's a great version. thanks for putting it up. for some reason i didn't run into it until yesterday. i think the only version i like better is the one here on youtube of just john and roy huskey jr.
@VictorianRose7 Also a longtime JH fan, and performing it with my group, Nearly There!, I agree this is got to be one of the best! Nice video and thanks!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Nothing against Mr. Hartford, but Elvis owns this song.
