Thank you so very much for posting this so that everyone who REALLY appreciates hockey can watch, study and "fumble," but, maybe even learn from, Orr's plays! :)
Gordie Howe says Orr is the best hockey player he's ever seen. When you add in that Red Fisher and Milt Schmidt say the same, we have testimony from respected NHL observers going back to the 1930's. The NHL was born in the '20's so who have we overlooked here?
Besides all of the usual plaudits regarding Orr, the one I like to add is that Orr's the only athlete I've ever seen who regularly made the crowd laugh audibly (see the Lanny McDonald story here, which is just one of many, trust me).
Now at 55 I still remember being 11 years old like it was last week wanting to be #4 Bobby Orr....one of the greatest players of my youth among an era that had many many great players on the ice nightly and only six then a dozen teams.....in the end My mind was willing but my ass would not follow. : )
Truely a treat having seen him play against North Stars twice at old Met Center.. Legends of hockey serice is a must see for true hockey fans. Thanks for posting.
Greztky can go fuck himself in the ass Bobby Orr could've kicked his as so far down the rink he would go through the boards and back through the other side.
Orr was the complete player. Block a shot get off the ice get the puck circle his net, scope everything out come down full speed go behind the opposing net flip the puck up and in the same mkotion beat the goalie. Gretzky was a phenominal offensive player graetest passer ever in my eyes. But had Orr not had his carrer cut short it is easily possible he could have had 1600 points before he retired. Orr is also the only defenseman to lead the NHL in scoring n did it 4 times I believe.
You're starting a team. You get to pick one player -- remembering that the player you don't pick is on the other side of the face-off. Who you gonna pick? I'll take Orr.
As the writers and broadcasters used to say back in the 60's and 70's..."Needs no introduction...Number 4...Bobby Orr." the fact that he had to retire at age 30 was truly a shame. The fact that he was enshrined in the Hall of Fame the next year at age 31 (one of only 10 players that did not have to wait the mandatory three years after his retirement) is a testament to his greatness. Watch the video in 01/79on the night at the Garden when his #4 was retired...a 25-minute standing ovation.
Gretzky? Pfff... Orr, Howe, Lemieux and even Ovechkin were and are greater than him. Gretzky was taken care of by referees in a way that didn't exist in the time of Orr and Howe. Lemieux got banged half to death because of his size (not to mention his cancer that kept him off the ice half of his career) and Ovechkin plays in a faster and more evolved NHL. Gretzky was fantastic but by no means the best when it's all said and done.
gretzky was the greatest pure scorer we've seen... numbnuts. hockey is a game of roles- there is no such thing as the "best". real hockey purists know this. now fuck off.
Didn't mean to piss in your cornflakes or anything. I'll say it for a third time... Gretzky was amazing and I agree with you on the roleplaying aspect.

The greatest hockey player who has lived. Let us remember the glory days, and let us honor Robert Gordon Orr - for we shall not see the like of him again. Thanks for the memories, Bobby.
Well in my opinion there is no comparison to Orr or Gretsky. Bobby Orr was & is the best player that ever put on a pair of skates. What Gretsky did for hockey is absolutely nothing to what Orr did.
There is & probably never will be another player like #4 Bobby Orr. You put Orr & Gretsky on the ice & Bobby Orr would skate circles around Gretsky. I never knew what the big hipe was about Gretsky anyways.
What player was on the ice for more goals per game than Gretzky or Lemieux ? What player was on the ice for fewer goals scored against his team per game than Gretzky or Lemiuex ? Bobby Orr.
I did'nt look at your page but you are too young to have seen him play live I'm sure. Because I know that if you were you would not be saying it. Of course I won't look as sure if I'm wrong about your age.
age has nothing to do with it. All of the three mentioned players, Lemieux, Gretzky and Orr were phenomenal as hockey players. But.. Comparing Gretzky or Lemieux to Orr is like comparing a linebacker to a quarterback. The NHL has had alot of good defensemen, Bourque, Coffey, MacInnis, Stevens, Park, Harvey and many others, but still none can be compared to Orr. Gretzky will be always compared to Lemieux and vice versa. But Orr has no equal.
With all due respect, who's determining what "popular opinion" is?...people who saw Orr play or those who only saw Gretzky and Mario play, but didn't see Orr? Track records? Look up all-time NHL career plus/minus stats: Orr is far and away the career leader, with +597 in 596 career games played, he's the only player to average +1 per game...the next closest player, HOFer Larry Robinson, averaged half a plus per game over his career.
If Orr has a more satisfying record scores in the NHL wall of fame, then what do ppl mean when they say Gretzky holds an all time record that has yet to be broken?
Gretzky holds (among others) the record for most points in a career; Orr was the first defenseman to score 100 points in a season, and remains the only defenseman to lead the NHL in scoring. What's most important to know about Bobby Orr is that he controlled games like no one else in professional team sports. Not Pele, not Michael Jordan. I'm just a fan, so I yield to HOFers Milt Schmidt, Gordie Howe and Montreal hockey writer Red Fisher who say Orr is the best hockey player who ever lived.
and the game of hockey in the Orr days was alot different then the game in the Gretzky era but Orr controlled the game because of skill. Gretzky "controlled" the game cus players woulda got knocked out by his bodygaurds.
Does "popular opinion" include expert opinions from Milt Schmidt, Gordie Howe and Montreal Gazette columnist Red Fisher? Those three HOFers have witnessed the NHL from the 1920's to the present, and ALL of them say Bobby Orr is the best player they ever saw.
Compared to Schmidt, Howe and Fisher, what do the rest of us know about hockey that they don't? When they say Orr's the best ever, I'll take their experienced, impartial word for it. There's absolutely no reason not to.
Just by virtue of the fact he played defense makes for Orr being the most dominant..."Best" all around hockey player to ever play the game...I dont believe any other blueliner has won the NHL scoring title...but I could be wrong...and nobody could take the game in to his own hands and control the pace of it as Orr did...in every zone on the ice...and he didnt a semenko to fight his battles.
i debated with my father, who believes it's a toss up between orr and mario lemieux as the best to ever play, how legendary players like howe and such would have fared in different eras. we both agreed that they would dominate. why? because they are hockey players. what people don't realize is the intelligence of these superstars. they adapted and evolved to the style of play that was common during the time period, and when it changed, so did they, and that's what separates them, their brains
You know it's funny. When you're a kid, you hate every other teams star players. Now that I'm an old man, I can't believe how many great players there were, playing right before my very eyes. Same goes for football and baseball. I just don't see it like I used to. Maybe I've become Jaded.
Howe called Orr getting hit was hockey biggest loss in history. Imagine if Bobby played another 10 years? The Blackhawks wouldv'e had a completely different team but think of Bobby Orr and Denis Savard on the ice at the same time. Who could skate with them in there prime?
Gordie Howe was a pretty tough guy, I'm laughing at the thought of you telling him he had no class. Your insurance has dental, right? The players from that era were cut from a different cloth. Howe was a great player!
Bobby Orr was my idol all through my minor hockey years. I consider myself one of the luckiest people on earth to have been able to actually train with him even though it was only for a short time in Chicago during his last training camp!!!!!!! He was everything I expected! The greatest!

This video was a great tribute to the best player to ever skate in the NHL. I was never a Boston fan, but to me Orr was absolutely the best!!!

Bobby Orr changed the game of hockey,
probably more so than any other man in
the history of the game. He was a joy to
watch! Best of all, he always handled
himself with grace, elegance and class.
The NHL's greatest loss was when Bobby
Orr retired after a mere ten seasons. Just
like Milt Schmidt said, "He was the greatest player I ever saw". No argument
here, Milt.

Slipknot5301 1 year ago
@Slipknot5301 Son, I have to disagree. Look, Gretzky
was a GREAT player....no argument there! But up until
Orr, defencemen just "stayed at home". Orr TOTALLY
changed the way defencemen played. Gretzky ushered
in an era of wide-open "fire wagon" hockey, and he's
to be commended for that. In terms of stats, Gretzky
owns the NHL record book. Orr, keep in mind, only
played ten seasons. I used to watch Orr play, and be-
lieve me, he was WONDERFUL!
