And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were few, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon all the face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw.
There is some debate, however, as to how accurately membership records reflect the number of people who actually consider themselves to be Mormons. For example, the rate of activity (people who actually go to church regularly) in the LDS Church has been estimated at around 35% worldwide, which would put the number of active Latter-day Saints at under 5 million.
A similar adjustment would be necessary for all churches. An "active" Latter-day Saint includes one who attends Church regularly, usually holds a volunteer position, contributes tithing, etc.
For example, the number of Catholics estimated at 1.3 billion. However, imagine if similar conditions were put on those membership numbers and did not include those who attended infrequently (Easter, Christmas, special occasions, etc.). That number would be significantly lower as well.
