The cops did have to "go that far" because if a criminal is under the assumption that they can attack officers who have weapons drawn, they are not living in the real world. The constant, hackneyed opinion that the officers should have tried to shoot his legs, or not shoot him so many times, etc is moronic. You don't pull a sharp-shooting exhibition duing an assault...you shoot to immobilize/ kill the perpetrator. He was posing a threat. Cops don't use unguaranteed force to 'possibly' stop him.

Sorry that it had to end that way but the officers did what they were trained to do. They tried non-lethal tactics that did not work and when the suspect turned and appeared to swing at the officer with the crowbar (a deadly weapon) the second officer opened fire to put an end to the threat. Some people may be crying overkill because of the number of shots but in the end the threat was ended. True, the K-9 probably could have been used earlier but why risk the dog's life?

1 non lethal shot would have done the trick. It is clear in the video the bandit is coiling back but continues to be shot like 9 more times. The other officer who was in danger of getting hit by the hammer is out of danger after the bandit is shot 1 time. So any shots fired after the first would be consider a crime and hence murder by cop.

The K9 would have gotten beat with that bar(most likey at the first swing he would have taken, bullets would have been fired since the dog DOES COUNT AS AN OFFICER) ...so no, that would have been suicide for the dog...they didnt have to KILL him, no they didnt, I believe a warning shot would have been the right procedure, or just one shot, not 10. Obvoiusly, this guy believes that by releasing the dog, the suspect will be taken down faster than he could have hit his partner in the face with a metal bar which probably would have been fatal and could have easily caused his partners death. However had that have happened, then people would start complaining why his partner didn't even take the shot.
