@RejectedManiac Well if I didnt know what I was doing, the TV set wouldnt be in fully functional condition right now. After 20 years experience I think I know a bit.
Hee Hee lets just fasten the ground clip to the tuner that way we will destroy something. but I guess he's just pulling the board for parts so it's ok. Just don't do this with a set you are trying to fix
@whiskeyify Television works fine, been working for 4 months now. That outer ground on the tuner is integrally attached to the chassis ground, the implosion band ( if metal ), the grounds on the rca jacks if available and the secondary ground of the flyback....... they are all tied together and on zeniths, they have a lightning/surge protector that is also connected so there is no damage to anything...... I was taught this way, though it might not be approved by all
@More350Power I stand corrected, just because I'm an old timer doesn't mean I know it all. I often watch the younger techs at work and learn from them. I'm 62 years old and still learning...thanks for the info.
@whiskeyify I had a zenith tech show me that and in fact I should have a wire with three or four aligator clips on it. The heat sinks, the outer casing as I mentioned before on the tuner, all of that should be tied together. If there is a malfunction or a trace is burned out on the board, having an extra clip tied on can save you from being zapped.
@whiskeyify It is, but to play it safe its better to ground it to a metal chasis if it has one or the tuner ground because in turn there SHOULD be a wire that comes from that metal band that connects to the secondary side ground of the flyback just as all the other parts. I had a tv that wasnt making a good connection on the band and it didnt make that snap noise, so I went to the other ground and it did discharge.
@Alex1M6 I am probably going to keep the iron ferrite core and re-wind it for a jacobs ladder or something..... thats if I cant get the parts to repair the board. If you are using CFL bulbs, they do smell when they start melting the electronics inside otherwise regular incandescent bulbs can smell from dust buildup or when their heat gets to the sockets.

@More350Power isn't it easier just to attach one clip to the silver wire around the tube?

Do you plan on doing anything interesting with the flyback transformer?
Funny, last night my bedroom lighting fixture started to smell like it was burning really bad after being turned on for just a few minutes.
