I find it extremely ironic that it is actually the Koreans who are known to be claiming the origin of things like, soccer, the printing press, and airplanes. That being said, I think the rhetoric of this clip is rather weak. However, I perfectly understand how both Koreans and Japanese believe that Dokdo/Takeshima is their territory. I just don't understand why the Korean government doesn't take it to the UN court to settle this once and for all even though Japan is willing to.

However, as I admitted in my earlier comment, I now understand that those people are "minorities" and are not an accurate reflection of the Korean population. I think you mean Jukdo island, I think your getting yourself confused. Dokdo island didn't even appear in Korea maps after 1984. The the tower that was there is a Japanese watch tower for the watch of Russian invasion. Dokdo was just a rock to Koreans until they noticed it had a Japanese flag. Japan has papers that it was claimed to be theirs for a historical event. The forgotten island is now part of Korea. Southern Korea and Japan has already settled this matter.

I completely agree with "brento1138" & "jokm". I'm American and my wife is Korean. Its makes her terribly upset, and really the only rationale is that Japan is powerful, economically and militarily. Many high officials and some of the people want the island and in their mind, they should get it.
Japanese have always been good people to me. Again, high acting officials seem to be the root of this dispute and I can only hope that truth and not power will be the final decider in this matter.

What an utterly unconvincing and silly arguement. I an from US but live in Japan and I can tell you that the Japanese people simply could care less about this issue. The only part of this that makes the public conciousness is the fruitloop antics of the Korean freaks ranting and raving and trying to cut their fingers off to protenst in public. Its a frickin rock with area about the size of central park in NYC - in the middle of no where for chrissakes.

And why they have that name?
At dawn, if korean see the east,we can see the Japan and the sunrise. And Japan looks origin of sun.
By this reason you can guess that ancestor of korea called them Japan and japaness called themselves Japan.

It is about East sea.

Having no dog in this fight, I do have to ask the Koreans- why should we change what we call the Sea of Japan? I mean, no country on earth calls it the "Korean Sea" or "East Sea", so what's our motivation as Westerners?
As for the other issue, I think I speak for virtually everyone else on the planet when I say I could not care less about which of you owns a couple square meters of rock in the middle of the sea.

Motivation should be historical objectivity and discouraging war atrocities. Japanese claim over these islands in 1905 was a precursor to Japanese imperialism that engulfed the entire Korean peninsula, China, South East Asia and the Pacific leading up to the Pearl Harbor bombings. Japan's claim over these islands stems from their unrepentant imperialism which Japanese conservatives look back with nostaligia. Can you imagine Germany reminiscing romantically over Nazi Germany and Hitler???

So, if I have you correctly, the only reason we should change is continuing Korean peevishness over World War II. Considering the Koreans hate us nearly as much as they hate the Japanese, I can't really find that a strong motivator.
It's nice you're admitting the only reason here is Korean anger, though. "Because we really want it and they suck" saves us having to go through all those maps and historical blah-blah. That makes it easy to say "Tough shit, Korea" and have done with it.

All you did was reference the Japanese during their expansionist phase, which has but one meaning, one of Korean pride, not rightful ownership. That's understandable, but once again, not our problem. We've been calling it the Sea of Japan since we've had maps of the area. So does every other country on earth. As for those rocks, well, that subject is simply too silly to discuss.
