@kalevraa Well there's some food for thought. Most of the time I see weapon throwing from a combat point of view. Given that the throwing knife has no edge, that is true. But not all throwing knives have no edge. Also, from a combat perspective, the knife has more stopping power and makes a different wound shape. The great thing about Bo-shurikens though is you can conceal carry them, since the only shurikens not allowed usually fit the description of the hira.
@TheNickhis well, i think i highly unlikely that i will ever throw a knife at a person. i don't throw knives for self-defense (if i ever did, i think i would have a very hard time convincing the police of that, not after they see the well-worked-over target and the dozens of spikes). however, i do make hundreds of throws each time, and find that spikes don't self destruct if they hit each other, are not loud, and don't try to leap back and take my head off if mis-thrown. just my 2 cents' worth.
@kalevraa hahaha I'm sure you would work them over, but no I wouldn't be so violent. In fact, I would hope it would disarm them from attacking me so they could hopefully turn their life around more than it killing them, but either way, what matters is that it stopped them in a narrow window of time.
@TheNickhis indeed. it's important, i think, to IMAGINE a real-life situation when practicing no-spin throwing, to keep it close to its roots and avoid it becoming too sport-like. however, i also think it's important not to forget that it's an imagined situation. unless i move to afghanistan, say, or certain areas in the middle east, i can't imagine i would ever use a throwing implement on another human. or at least so i want to believe.
One time I was throwing knives in my room, my mom walked in and I jumped up to "hide the evidence", and went to my closet "looking for my school clothes", and my mom accused me of sniffing glue. -_-
For those of you who aren't familiar with weapons throwing Michael Janich isn't all that. He made a statement on his Making It Stick DVD that weapons throwing could be used as a martial art. He then proceded to throw from the same distance which is very impractical for combat. Yes he knows the basics of the sport and can teach them but he hasn't demonstrated skills applicable to combat. Check out my vid to see some variation in distance and style.

@robertxvenom, Yes and No. In spear-style or no-spin throw it is helpful to keep your arm relatively straight. However, when throwing the knife so that it spins, a natural overhand throw is better (your arm will bend).
Many throwers throw from the heavy end and use the slip release to control the spin rate and time the rate to the distance, you develop a feel for the knife's rotational rate and use the feel for timing the slip to the distance. I would NEVER throw from the lightest end, all my throws at the shorter ranges use a half spin blade grip. You can put enough power behind throwing a bowie or bayonet into a live tree so deeply that it takes both hands and some leg to pull it out.
@paco75082 agreed there, two you gotta make sure it buries deep enough to do a lot of damage, otherwise he could still use it against you, but that's why you need a primay fighting knife to keep with you @ all times, but keep a throwing knife for that purpose and never use ur primary fighting knife as a thrower.
@leroy592 Put the object on your finger and move it around until you find the balance point. Whatever side you are closer to is the heavier side. You can definitely throw an Ice pick or screwdriver with decent success. A box-cutter on the other hand, may be an issue due to the small sticking surface and relative weakness of a the box-cutters razor.

i wish he had done some no-spin throws, also known as combat throws. they are a bit more practical, as you can throw pretty much anything with a point, and the distances are not pre-set.
@TheNickhis checked your channel meanwhile; you are pretty handy with your throwing implements. i used to throw knives, but nowadays i switched almost entirely to spikes. knives are loud when they don't stick, bounce more and are easily damaged -- why throw them at all? why are we stuck with the trowing knife shape, with its thin, flat body and false edges? why are there edges at all -- the throwing knife can't cut anything anyhow. why not just use spikes?
