I remember when "Luka" first came out, in the summer of '87. I first heard it on Casey Kasem's "American Top 40" countdown show while I was serving in the U.S. Navy stationed in Spain. I was touched by the song's serious topic, because I was was an abused child. I also made a promise to myself at that time that when I did have children, I would never subject them to the pain and terror I had to endure. I think it's safe to say, despite my many faults, I have lived up to that promise.
A very noncommercial release about a very serious subject (child abuse) that went all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard singles charts in 1987. The album, "Solitude Standing," peaked at No. 11 in August, bringing the unknown avant garde singer to pop's forefront. Three years later, she would again reach the Top 5 with "Tom's Diner."

I am a songwriter and I totally relate to Susan I had a manager and he compared her to me and I was complimented beyond the ft hills of Calgary then I read an article or story about her and I again felt so close to her understanding of writing and stuff

My best friend is a foster carer, she see all too many Luka's. This is so moving we of us who can scoff should be counting our blessings in comparison to some of these poor children.
Always amazed me how hauntingly beautiful this song was considering it was about a very ugly and emotive subject. "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." So true that.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't find anything funny about this song. Disturbing, moving, sad, yes. Funny? No. Maybe it's our society's deep discomfort with the issue of abuse (of children, of women) that makes us feel the need to make light of something that shoves the reality of it in our face as this song does. The point we should take away here is if you SEE or HEAR something, SAY something. Abuse is NOT a "private, family matter", it is a crime.
@ravenme333 Yup. I recall some years ago, I *did* hear 'some kind of fight' in the next apartment. I did tell someone who it was - the police and later on, Child Protective Services. Next thing you know, Luka's daddy is doing five years as a 'guest' in the Commonwealth of Virginia's Crossbar Hotel. See, when you say something, these predators get justice. Those times when they dont, well that is because too many people did NOT say anything. So...SPEAK UP! No Excuses!
@dougd1015 If we were at a benefit dinner against child abuse, I'd say " Yes", but we're on you tube, and for whatever reason, I'm sure that 5 year old had it coming.
This song takes me back to my first trip to NYC. Riding in a taxi at night going over the Queensboro bridge, this song played. I looked out of the cab window, pass the twinkling golden lights reflected on the surface of the river, to the windows of the buildings along side the bridge, I thought to myself as I peered into those dark windows, some of them warmly lighted, but I focused on the dark panes... I thought, Luka is there... and I felt a deep melancholy weigh heavily upon me and I cried.
but that wasn't really such a long time ago ... people haven't changed that much, yet the times have. life back then was a lot harder, least that's how it seems to me now - looking back
I don't know how sad this really is, when I was a kid it was normal to be "put in your place" by adults - you would just get slapped arownd and knocked arownd in those days very easily it was NORMAL back then, it was considered healthy because there was always a limit to it and only what was above that line was abuse
And I'm not ashamed to say that I prefer the way we were raised to the way children are in these days
@Bluzme to be hit and slapped around is only okay to an extent but when it leaves a briuse...Its abuse. All I can say is to treat your child that way will have them scared to make a single mistake around you and believe it or not....Thats not okay..Children have the right to act themselves when around adults and the way things "were" have a reason to the way they arent things now..:)...have a nice day
@mizznohizz well of course, there is most definitely something wrong with anyone who would hit or beat a kid that badly to actually get him/her bruised up
i really like the songs but i dont like the lyrics your story just dont argue anymore its not your bussiness anyway just dont ask me how i am if u hear someyhing late at night somekind ofd trouble u just dont ask me what it was......... i just dont agree with that if someone has trouble i try to help them i hate when people say me that its not your business anyway just dont ask me what it was
@fiiiiiiillliiiipa I agree and I am glad that you don't like people not helping but this song is because Luka was afraid that if his parents found out he may get in trouble. I hope if you know a little boy or girl is in trouble to get involved. It is sad that this song is what happens in the world.

Very simple at first, then becoming heavily layered and complex. Such a sad feeling I get toward the end for such a seemingly subtle and upbeat song.
@MsXbox3600 actualy the boy luka DID live upstairs from her (wasn't abused though) she got his mail one time by accident because his name was luka VEGA. she mentioned it in an interview once.

I listened to this on the radio a lot when I was driving my police cruiser. A abused child survivor, I found it helpful when I went into domestic disturbances ... pulled many a kids out of harms way ... racked a few shins with the oak night stick on the abusers ... do unto others ... as you would want them to do unto you .... no room for abusers ... abusers are loosers.
good on you mate it's a shame you can't deal out swift justice ,to the creeps who need it, anymore. and its only getting worse what with the crap sentences they give out and call it justice. Now ,with the internet they can all get in touch and see who is the most depraved and go for babies that are WEEKS old. WHY ISN'T SOMETHING BEING DONE?@HGRPhotography1
No this isn't a funny song at all. It's a sad and serious song.

I remember kids in the 7th grade singing this song. That was in 1987.

Oui, c' est une belle chanson mais triste car lorsqu' on traduit, les paroles signifient qu'il s' agit de l' histoire d' un petit garçon battu...
