Can't believe they put a 15 year old in a role of a much older woman, and a wife no less! I mean I know it was very innocent compared to today's romances but still it seems like the child-star girls had it harder than the boys in terms of not having much of a real childhood.
And I've been all over the world--why don't you go to Africa and try playing the "race card" there. It wouldn't work, would it? By the way, what are your credentials--do you have a Ph.D in Cultural Anthropology? I doubt it--you're unqualified to make any sort of statement.
Oh, and he had been a butler for Jack Warner, so now we're back to movies again. He said the cast for "Forever Amber" was chosen in 15 minutes at a dinner at Jack Warner's house. He also relates a story of a servant stealing some meat from Joan Crawford during WWII when they had rationing and Crawford chasing the thief down the street in a taxi.
And of course servants steal, no matter what color--and they pad the bills, too. I was talking to an old guy from WWII--he said servants padding the bills was called "knocking down" in the old days.
I have a lot of black friends, and the mature, responsible, employed ones tell me the problem with blacks comes from high school: it becomes a fad for them to drop out of high school and to get pregnant. Uneducated single mothers = problems. 60% of black women don't even have husbands. Solve problems, people, don't create further problems by calling people names. Playing the the "race card" is always an ignorant response.
I think I better straighten some of you clowns out: 40% of the people in prison aae black, 20% are Latino and the vast majority of criminals come from single mother families. These problems have to be addressed, yet if anyone brings this data up, hypocritical, ignorant people start calling names like "racist, mysoginist, etc." because they've been brainwashed. Deal with the reality--or do you like promoting criminal behaviour? "If I know the cause, then I'll know the cure" as Darnell says.
@cleopatrabonz: I was making reference to a black woman who was a neighbor of mine for a while--she'd take her welfare money, spend it on drugs and booze and go on binges, she had been in prison and her teenage son was in trouble with the law already. I derive my comments from real life. 40% of the people in our nation's prisons are black, yet they're only 12% of the population. You're the one that's ignorant. And you're the one that's racist.
That apartment is ridiculous. --They'd have to be billionaire$ to afford it. Well, it was the Great Depression and Hollywood was selling fantasy to the poor dumb people. And a black maid? --She'd steal them blind and be on drugs. Did people really have black maids back then or was it a Hollywood convention?
funny bit with joan davis. (miss applegate) lol, "the machine age" had "automatic stamp lickers".
awe, ain't that sweet? they have the poor black maid (mildred gover, 49 movies, always a maid) ask for a pay cut cuz the rich white girl had to get a job.

@gallantrycross well, that was racist and stereotypical. And, yes, there were a lot of black domestics back then. There few options for blacks.
