  • for all those who doesnt understand, here in south america 500 years ago, the europeans came and killed and raped thousands and thousands of natives and originary people. Maybe Dave wanted to put out all that history of murder and abuses all just in a song and video...

  • This is the Amazon and one of its peoples: the Assurini form Brazil, I recognised. Great video!

  • the video and song just too weird for me

  • Fabulous!!!

  • Makes me remember of my happy teenager days !

  • The part where he admits to being evil is the most powerful part, where the song can't hide the truth of the evil that was committed is amazingly performed.

  • Hey... it's Alanis!!!! YEAH! =P~

  • i like the voice of Alanis Morissette in the end of the song

  • porque dave cuelga de un candelabro!!!!!!!!!! que tiene que ver ??? jauajuajua que loco!

  • @krolourdes porque um candelabro é um símbolo europeu de poder e dinheiro - o que ele representa. É simples, não é?

  • its should be theres a POO in the water!

  • tremendo video, la fotografía, la letra, la conciencia que deja intanquila al alma.........

  • I'm going to dismiss the 4 dislikes as miss clicks ... anyway ... i love this song!!!! Dave is freaking awesome, saw them live in Atlanta GA!!!! one of the bands that are actually better live than on record !!!

  • I love the last part of the song when Alanis Morissette sings along with Dave Matthew

  • There's alanis' voice inthis song, very, very beautiful.

  • I rember that they played this song live last time I saw them, it's so different yet so beautiful

  • I fucking love Stefan in this video! Well...I love him anyway...but especially in this video!

  • MP3 would be nice.

  • Algo de lo mejor que se produjo en los 90's me gusta todo en esta cancion !

  • Dave Matthews band are Sick!!!! Carter Beauford is the best drummer ever! Look at his solos on here, awsome!

  • Mirá cómo pelean los pelotudos! jajajaja

    Buena canción!

  • Sheldon Cooper?

  • just listen to the song. that's why it's up here

  • relax people.. its just a song. btw your all realy immature.

  • AHHHH everyone is angry at everyone!

  • Shivers...

  • Kinda like the Crash Into Me vid...

  • Stefan kicks it in this vid

  • Every time I want to watch this video,s nerds are arguing about who took what land from whom. No one cares about your point of view and you will never convince whomever your arguing with, so cut the shit.

  • studi ass

  • Haha, what?

  • You're funny. Do you study how to write? Or is that next year in third grade? What a douche.

  • Magua says you are still a douche and should learn how to write.

  • i'll dedicate this song to my husband after i divorce him.

  • soylajefa, thru sickness and health, good times and bad....everything else. You took vows that obviously are meaningless. I hope your husband becomes a bajillionaire and you are scratching through rat feces for your next meal...good luck in your endeavors.

  • you're so ignorant. 1. get the stick out of your ass, you religious fanatic; 2. mind your own business; 3. if he ever became rich, i'd probably end up taking more than half ; and last but not least 4. i couldn't care less what you think. have a nice day, idiot.

  • if you dont like the country then leave

thats the good thing about this country

    you can leave NP

  • MrsMc got half of that correct, you are suppose to find out on your own what his songs mean. But, every song he sings makes sence, you just need to find the story behind it.

  • Absolutely adore this song.

  • the live version is better

  • To answer laleyendadeltaco's question, it's about how the European's came and took the Native American's land, and poisoned their water so they would have to leave.

  • cool story bro

  • can someone tell me what does this song mean? pretty please

  • well if you listen to the lyrics it seems like its about someone taking someone elses land... in the video hes dressed up like hes from the 17th century or something... i think its about like the age of exploration when the english took the land from the native americans and the spanish took the land from the mayans or aztecs or whatever.

  • @2DanRam2 and the portugueses in Brazil, but i think, when you say whatever it sounds weird to our ears, iim Brazillian and we know what we suffer with this kind of a exploration, all latin amerria.

  • @2DanRam2

Mayans and aztecs are native americans too, don't you think !

  • Well, it´s about horrible crimes against native populations that still happen nowadays in many places, like Brazil, my country.

  • @adamalvespin unfortunately

  • yah its basically about how although the USA is amazing our past is tainted with bad deeds such as the genocide of native americans

  • USA isnt amazing, we are the most screwed up country in the world.

  • You are right, we are so much more screwed up than Rwanda and Haiti and Saudi Arabia and Cambodia. Such a good call by you. If we are so screwed up, get the hell out and go to a better place.

  • idk about that

  • You can also say its representative of the Apartheid in South Africa, since Dave is South African. I've heard him explain the song in terms of the US colonization and the Apartheid.

    Awesome song either way.

  • your supposed to find that out urself. ur not supposed to understand it thats the good thing about dave his songs are sooo good but they dont make any sence!!!! he is GENIUS!

  • It is still a good thing to get the message that dave and the others are trying to get across to their listeners.

  • It's almost like the less hair he has, the better his music is!

  • this song is so original its amazing

  • Don't drink the water blood in the water!!!

  • Normally I'd say beautiful song or something in the comment I put here... but this really is more than that. It's so... POWERFUL, that I just can't quit listening!

  • the best time he ever performed this was live at central park, holy crap it's like god except better.

  • bela fleck is playing the banjo part

  • really i didnt know that... i like bela fleck too

  • yeh wikipedia lol

  • at 1:25, if it's what I think it is, it's a similar sound to what Jimi Hendrix did in Voodoo Chile' where you hold your hand on the strings of an electric guitar, but don't press them completely against the neck. You'd quickly strum the pick across the strings like you normally would, but your hand prevents the the strings from vibrating. that's what it sounds like to me they are doing.

  • One of his best songs.

Just cant get enough of that background instrument thing at about 1:25, how do they do that?

  • its guitar, and you either have a nice little sound box that will do that for you, or you can just turn off all the bass and synth and you get that effect

  • its actually destortion with a slight palm mute that he opens up more at the end of each full play of the rift.

  • not sure why, but i just can't get enough of this song. lol

  • Great Song=)

  • This song is incredible, Dave is incredible.

If anybody is interested, I've made a rap beat sampling the "Still Water" vocals. It's really not that bad. Feel free to stop by and check it out, it is in the "Videos" section on my page.

    Comments and advice are appreciated.

  • I was ten when my dad bought this cd. I'm 21 and it's still my favorite.

  • Bit More Rocky Then Some Of The Others,

But Love It All The Same. :)

  • best live song

  • this video was namde it in Amazonas - Venezuela

  • YA.... DONT DRINK THE WATER IN CHICAGO...... THANXS DAVE, good song in any case though

  • hahahaha

  • dude this song is rly trippy man,, i love it!!!

  • actually its talking about the trail of tears mostly

-atleast thats what i think but everyone looks at it in different ways

  • It's about the apartheid in south africa and american indians

  • the best DMB's song

  • poor Roi...rip buddy :(

  • it's just music people!!!! enjoy it!

  • wow alanis morissette is on this song

  • where?

  • the woman singing towards the end. that's alanis

  • So what if he is South African.

I wonder where your grandparents are from?

Is there such a thing as a true American, all inbreed Irish etc etc etc

  • The point is, DIPSHIT that he can stay at home and write about what YOU did to the Zulu's and what DeBeers did to the Africans who dug their diamonds instead of writing about the indians in the United States. What are you? One of the diamond digging South African jews? British? "Oh, the Dutch are doing rather well down there, my lord, we mustn't have that. Let's go take the diamonds and gold for Her Majesty". Bullshit.

  • stfu. im not south african, but why can't he write a song that talks down on all imperialistic interventions?

and it is conservative -- "i didnt do a THING to the indians" -- your saying that since we weren't around back then, then we shouldn't have anything to do with it.

thats a terrible philosphy to live by.

"oh i wasn't around when the holocaust occured, so why should i do anything to memorialize those who lost there lives and family"

    asshole.

  • yer all stupid, EVRYONE know that ipods only hav a year guarantee.

    shit

  • American culture is so enveloping that it would be hard not to comment. that is the same story in essentiality, whether it be south african or not. art, children, overcomes race and religion and makes a comment on human nature. examples of which cycle through history. if you knew any history you'd know that the story of the native americans is the same as any cultural element encorached upon.

  • your upset because he speaks down on one imperialistic intervention but not all? he's an artist and its one song at a time. and we cant take responsibility for what happened in the past. we can remember and learn from our mistakes but cant change it

  • Go search for the lyrics and you should notice that the song does not mention any specific group the lyrics is universal and can be aplied to any group that was wronged in the past like the zulus or xhosa or any native group anywhere in the world! and I dont no why you go on about north american indians because this is clearly amzon indians and they where probably only put in the music vid by the director to apeal to an american audience.

  • I am pretty sure its actually talking about the trail of tears mostly

-atleast thats what i think but everyone looks at it in different ways

  • trail of tears...look at that statue...and absorb it...

  • Great song, but commie nonsense. He is South African. Let him sing about Lesotho and The Zulu. The nerve of him. You should ALL be suspect of such music that is, clearly, beautiful, but politically suspect. I didn't do a THING to the indians. Anyone who did is dead and therefore cannot be sued or prosecuted. All the Lakota people I know in South Dakota call themselves "indians". No indian I know EVER called themselves "first nations people".

  • I am an "indian" and got into a big fight online...seems that whites think we refer to ourselves as "native americans" all the time-WAKE UP! we don't! We say indian. I'm an enrolled member of a tribe, too

  • Thank you, VERY much Wadew!

    Yours in friendship,

    Yaknbo

  • everyone else in the band is from American. that's a very republican idea of yours. read about the trail of tears. you'll learn why this song was written

  • I know ALL about the trail of tears, thank you very much. Did you know that it was Roger Tawny's idea and that Andrew Jackson opposed it? No, I bet you didn't. By the way what about what Gehghiz Khan did to all his conquered? What about the Spanish in Mexico? Oh, that's right, they're "hispanic". There not european. Republican idea my ass. Grow up.

  • wat duz dmb hav 2 do wit da cherokeez n dat nazty dude andrew jackson?

  • i love this band and song! but wait, is dave on a chandelier...? it looks like it...any way great song!

  • La mejor bateria en la historia de la musica.

  • Crea es la mejor interpretacion de una bateria en la historia de la musica.

  • 4:30 the best part of the song

  • sorry i mean 3:30

  • I like to think that every person that lives in

    CONUS...should grasp this...

  • Native sovereignty!

  • i just wish they would perform more in this more artistic manner

  • Go listen to the acoustic version.

  • oh i know...lol... i just meant the whole get up. their music is always great, and i do enjoy the way they perform... i have just grown to like more artistic performances recently. it would be nice to see them go that direction if they could pull it off.

  • LeechHat. It's Latin. Comes from the word "vivere" which means to live. You're right though, but around here in South Africa when they support something they say eg. Viva Bafana Bafana, Viva! As far as I know, Dave Matthews is South African, so I thought to do it African style. Appreciate your input. PS Bafana Bafana is the name of the national soccer team. It means "the boys" I think. Bafana means boy at any rate. Adios...

  • xPRONKx sorry to weird you out, man. Heard the song on radio back in '98 and it's only rarely played in my neck of the woods. What can I say? I'm a DMB junkie. Still think it's good music though. Got a complex theme, unlike most stuff playing nowadays.Let me be African with this one: Viva DMB, Viva! HEHEHEHE.

  • That's actually Latino. Viva is a Spanish word xD

  • This song is actually really scary

  • guardianvampire.

That was possibly the most creepiest thing i have ever heard. I will sleep differently becuase of that tonight.

  • hah that was funny

  • This was the first song of DMB I ever heard. It spring into my mind and creates this hunger for their music that drives me to youtube. Thanks for posting this. It satisfies my addiction...

  • I cant stop dancing to this song its true music

  • that voice so hypnotic

  • great song...really strange video

  • Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out what the chandelier (that Dave is swinging on) signifies.

  • In some clips it puts together shots of native central/south Americans running and what looks like well dressed Europeans running.

It could be the same type of thing. Like combining Tarzan's vine with a rich European's chandelier.

    That's just my idea :\

  • Alanis Morrisette singin backup?

  • Yes

  • back vocals at the end are just great. the hole song is a masterpiece

  • Agreed, Morissette really nails it there.

The vid is captivating as well.

    Masterpiece does ring true.

  • he rips that banjoe up in this song is sounds so sweet

  • its actually Bela Fleck playing banjo on this song and a few other on the album.. He's a virtuoso banjo player.. if such a thing exists

  • my god,i love this song!... i was so luky for watch them at live here in argentina, and of course, for hear this song!... dmb rocks!...

by the way, soy aleman.. y hablo español "mas mejor" que ustedes... "yo domino 4 idiomas"..... jajajaja.. y yo domino a tu mama

  • i absolutely LOVE this song! (and rhyme and reason...along with all his other songs!!!)

  • i love this song

  • Now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind seeing a DMB video in the stop-motion style.

  • i love watching videos on youtube naked! u

  • can someone please explain this song to me? thanks!!

  • Sounds to me like it's about stealing land. Lyrics: Come out come out No use in hiding Come now come now Can you not see? Theres no place here What were you expecting Not room for both Just room for me So you will lay your arms down Yes I will call this home -cont-
  • Away away You have been banished Your land is gone And given me And here I will spread my wings Yes I will call this home Whats this you say You feel a right to remain Then stay and I will bury you Whats that you say Your fathers spirit still lives in this place I will silence you -cont-
  • Heres the hitch Your horse is leaving Dont miss your boat Its leaving now And as you go I will spread my wings Yes I will call this home I have no time to justify to you Fool youre blind, move aside for me All I can say to you my new neighbor Is you must move on or I will bury you -cont-
  • Now as I rest my feet by this fire Those hands once warmed here I have retired them I can breathe my own air I can sleep more soundly Upon these poor souls Ill build heaven and call it home Cause youre all dead now I live with my justice I live with my greedy need I live with no mercy I live with my frenzied feeding I live with my hatred I live with my jealousy I live with the notion That I dont need anyone but me Dont drink the water Theres blood in the water
  • Thank u!

  • this song is about the native americans and how we took their land

  • how old are you if you don't mind me asking? cause if your a kid, you just don't know music too well and if your an adult your probably a failed musician with little or no creativity/originality. BTW you wrote this comment on another song i was listening to and reusing an immature family guy esque joke is pretty lame. Family guy's a funny show though.

  • good for you. confrontation breeds innovation.

  • Hey, your mom's medical plan should've included abortion... but hey that's just my opinion.

  • DAVE MATTHEWS IS GOD!

  • Absolut great! Thx for sharing Sevenender!

  • man fucker ill drink the fuckin water shit it aint urs shit its gods' water

    so fuck off!

if u dont like indians than go bk to fuckin norway or england i dont give a shit dont nobody give a shit!

  • Wow that was super ignorant. He's from South Africa and there are a lot of people who care. If your not one of them then take a moment to really listen to the song. Because he's talking to people like you.

  • wow what for a band

    what for a song

    so dark and far out

    full of longing

it rises slowly to the great final

when alanis morisette sings with him

    wow amazing

    wonderfull

  • Yes, there's some Morrisette influence in this, but come on, the real influence here surely is Peter Gabriel! His voice work is an exact carbon copy of what Gabriel was doing in the early 90s. Also, the music style.

This song could have been included on Peter Gabriels "US" and it wouldn't stand out!

  • naw man... i honestly thing this is original to a T

  • One of the best songs from the 90's, very powerful on a lot of levels. * * * * *

  • i'm not so sure but i hearded this music video was filmed at venezuela (south america) so guys, the natives you wacth into it, are not aztecas, they are Venezuelan aborigen called "YANOMAMIS"

  • thank you for that

  • Read some books and Buy an atlas DICKHEAD! it Aint there land that the bacon dodgers Have taken Back!! shit I hate Nazi's and Anti - Semites as much as the next educated person, but dont kid yourself that the 'Chosen People' are any less fucked up then the rest of us.

  • Oh boy, I guess you should buy a good book instead "Jew
