To create a legal deck for current tournaments and stuff, can they energies be from older sets or do they too have to be from the current legal sets?

Basic Energy cards are always legal, regardless of which Set/Expansion they belong too. Special Energy cards can also be used PROVIDED that they have been reprinted in a currently tournament-legal set.

The most populare brand is "Ultra Pro" and a pack of 100 3x3 pages usually runs somewhere around 20 dollars.

Yeah, I have 5 DarkSteel decks. 1 is indestructable, 1 makes opponents lose their cards, one is all about giving a boon to the same card, 1 is all about the modular, and the final one has an umbreon in it, and I don't know what the theme is.

No they aren't. If you have played other trading card games, you would get the joke behind it. I also deliberately left out the virgule in the word darksteel, but I capitalized the D and S to make it look like 1 and 2 words at the same time.

Master Blaster has the indestructible theme.

Mind Swarm has the discard theme.

Swarm and Slam boons creatures with the same name.

Transference is based on the modular keyword ability.

And of course Nightfall has Dark and Steel cards.
