@jerikco1 O Fortuna, from Carmina Burana. It is the first and last track of this scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935 and 1936. If you like classical music get this work. It is one of my all time favorite pieces of music and I recommend it to anyone who ever asks about it.
With his vision and understanding of the source material, Imagine what Boorman could do with today`s technology and a much bigger budget? Still he`d need a new cast which would be a pity, As Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and Helen Mirren would be hard to replace. And the guy who plays Lancelot here has passed away, Very saddening.
one element that makes this film brilliant is boorman's love of nature. he totally understood Merlin's pagan connection with earth and how it's vitality was linked to the King. i'm sort of glad this was made pre-CGI because CGI can make movie makers lazy. this film was made in the full splendor of wooded beauty.
@yarbles67 I agree. No other director could bring this or other legend to life as Boorman did. What a pity that fact is and I wish I'm horribly wrong:D
Dears, dont forget that movies relesed on the 80 's, it was a fantastic movie with great spécial effects. The soundtrack is one of the better of all time in film history.
A masterpiece into the masterpiece... kindly yours..
From all King Arthur movies I like this one most because it follows the story legend of King Arthur not the historical research of some historians in the past ten years. When this movie came out in 1981 most people didn´t know something about a possible historical existence of King Arthur they know just the legend told from medieval times. And besides all historical research there is still no 100% proof of his existence. So it is still the legend of Arthur and his knights fighting against evil.
I had really fond memories of this movie, but looking at this bit of footage, The King would have looked much more impressive riding off to battle with a bit more than a just dozen trusty followers, don't you think?
this remains my favourite medieval movie, thats funny it was made in 1981 and there are contenders but the movies that are better than this are only that way because they improved on this perfection
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember hearing something about the acress who played the Lady of the Lake (or the woman who held the sword from the water, specifically) was the highest payed actor in the film. Something about a really expensive insurance policy.
Modern CGI graphics would make it look better, but I still think it's amazingly cool when the trees change from the dead of winter to beautiful spring at 0:18.
The cast, setting, and acting is unsurpassed. None of the King Arthur movies before or since has even come close. You may see some spectacular special effects in a remake but nothing will seem as real as Boormans masterpiece.
King Arthur & his Sarmatian (Iranian) Knights who were real people were transformed into the mythic Arthurian legends that took on a different look and feel that the real story had. The song that was used in this scene, which also made the song more popular with the new generation is called "THE CARMINA BURANA" by Carl Orff.
I think this film captures the true essence of the Arthurian Legend more than any other to date because it has more magic , is more mythic and has a more surreal feeling like dream. Also the film seems to be for the most part centered around Merlin, but has equally powerful performances by many of the other characters.
My favorite line after Arthur drank from the Chalice"I did not know how empty was my soul, till it was filled"!! That is a line so majestic, and perfect,it transcends everything else!
@peanut1602 ...yet. I'm hoping someday they'll make one that tops even this, but I doubt it. King Arthur is going the way of Robin Hood, where film makers would rather "reimagine" the story than do a good update.
This scene is supposed to illustrate the underlying truth of the Arthur character and by extension the masculine god hero of ancient britain as consort to a feminine counterpart...namely, "the land and the king are one"...in other words it deserves the music lol.

You are lucky, I got booted out of the movie when I was around 11....(rated R ), but snuck back in to catch a few seconds of this screen.......must have great to see it on the big screen......some usher out there deprived me of that...oh well
Actually, i saw this movie on tv. :) I never get a chance to catch it on the big screen. And there were a lot of censors, they cut off certain scenes. When i was older i bought the dvd and saw the cut off scenes. Now i understand the movie better. :D So yeah, i guess the usher knew of some scenes and that's why they booted you out, coz they wanna watch the scenes by themselves. LOL XD! Kidding.... it's a really fantastic movie really. :)
