Obama's criticism of u.s. policy in Iraq up until that point is fair and accurate. Most people in Washington at that time agreed with his assessment. I'm not sure they needed to be reiterated at that particular hearing however, as the point was to gather information from Patreus... though getting it on record counts for something I guess. And to those that say he was attacking or undermining Patreus, that is completely false, he was clearly criticizing american policy.

How can this not be a criticism of Petraeus? The plan was designed, implemented, and managed by Petraeus. He told the General the surge was failing, which we now know to be totally false. The only reason that Bush was able to sign the Status of Forces Agreement in 2008 with Iraq was because of the absolute success of Petraeus' plan that little boy obama here is shitting on. Now, obama wants the guy that he, hillary, and biden all called a liar in one way or another, to save his ass. Go to hell!

Petraeus is a good soldier, and that's what's wrong with his testimony. Admiral Fallon refused to be a good soldier and they got him retired. Obama used his time exactly right. There is no point asking Petraeus questions. There is no military solution. The only way we could win now is to come in in force and completely destroy the country, like we did in Falujah. It sounds like this is exactly what McCain wants to do, but hopefully he won't get a chance.

I'm guessing, from your comments, that General Petraus (though complimented by the Senator) will not be our commander in Iraq in the Obama administration.

Keep in mind his statement was at the very end of the hearing. He didn't have much time. He made a statement, and made the most of his time. He wasn't the chair, and didn't have time to engage the general in a long Q and A. He did what he had to do in the time allotted to him.

his answer is simple. get the fuck out of iraq. it was an extremely stupid thing to do, for all the reasons he describes. the iraq war is clearly prepetuating anti-democratic, pro-islamic fundamentalist feeling in the middle east and europe. it provides an excuse for terror, a distraction for terror, a battlefield for terror. it is likely that iraqis will rally against foreign insurgent elements if there is no western soldiers to justify jihad. 1 billion people in the world are muslim.

they are suspicious of america and democracy, and they hate bush precisely because of his policy in iraq. you can justify removing the corrupt and despicable baathist regime on a moral basis, but in light of the wider world, the situation in the middle east, the dissillusioned muslim populations in europe etc it is clearly a war that has only enflamed the conflict between east and west, between the islamic and christian world. it encourages terror. this is what obama is talking about.

we know iraq and america, and the rest of the free world, are clearly worse off as a result of the iraq war. iraq is gripped by terror - its doctors, nurses, teachers and journalists are fleeing. every bomb creates more hatred and potential recruits for alquida. thousands of iraqis have died, and so have americans. and for what? nothing but a continual descent into violence that played out across the worlds media gives angry young muslims an excuse to become extremists.
