@toothpickfacedrummer he talked about the basic swing pattern on the ride. He talked about incorporating the high hats into the swing pattern. He also talked about including triplets on the snare to keep time. It's a drum lesson for jazz beginners. Don't expect much from it.
Haha. You can always tell its an expertvillage video as soon as you see the guy in front of the camera. I've got say though that he passes the fail test, although he should have mentioned that on 2 and 4 are the accents and the other ride notes are played very low.
i never heard of expert village before... i watched a 6 videos still havent got what im looking to learn... i can now understand why expert village sucks so badly
Every real jazz player that a true jazz pattern isn't like this, it's more in the accents you place when playing the ride symbol than doing it this way. sigh
@DancingMonkey12 -- agreed. I wonder how many of us could set the metronome at 180 and keep this excercise going for a minute with no flubs. Not me. Not yet, anyway.
@DancingMonkey12 -- agreed. I wonder how many of us could set the metronome at 180 and keep this excercise going for a minute with no flubs. Not me. Not yet, anyway.
I think it's a load of rubbish to tell someone that you need to play 'just' the ride cymbal in your first lesson, you pick that up in about 10 seconds... also your playing the ride cymbal so loud for a jazz groove.
I don't teach, but I've been a drums student for a few years now amongst other instruments, and I know the kind of standards you should be taught in drumming, as well as good ways in which to bring them across. Spending a lesson on tapping the ride cymbal is not only de-motivating but it's boring, and why not have fun with music?
I do agree that there shouldn't be a whole lesson spent on that, but at least 5-10 mins spent getting it right is better than a week getting it wrong.
Well of course, I'm not saying that though am I? I'm saying something like that can be consolidated in much less time, but of course it's variable depending on who you're teaching, or even being taught by. Which is why it's important everyone's got their technique right :)
The, which is why I said "the". I don't really know what your arguing here, I can have an opinion without you gradually coming to the same conclusion through this conversation :P
@bomberbadj : That's what they're called in jazz drummers' lingo. Check out John Riley's revered "Bop" books, for instance -- he talks about skip notes, too.
