Why do they cost so much? £350 I think for what they do and the basic hardware £100-£150. Can I develop for Android on them yet once App Inventor is dropped?
@OPINOX12009 It doesn't need an i3 or i5 or anything because it cannot do anything that requires such a fast CPU. Putting a faster CPU in it would be overkill because it will not get used.
@OPINOX12009 I can't tell if you're mocking me or not ;-) Maybe I deserve it. But honestly, if you've ever experienced repeated slowdown on Google News, for example, you'll know how frustrating it can be. I don't want to wait any longer than necessary. A better processor wouldn't even max out loading webpages, but the Atom does.
Actually, this video is bullshit. You DO have to set up the wireless connection. You DO have to agree to a Terms of Service or Use. You DO have to set up your profile, picture included. You DO have to complete a tutorial on using the touchpad. You DO have to turn off Google Instant because it will SLOW DOWN your computer whenever you search. You DO have to find AdBlock and install it if you don't want YouTube videos stuttering every time an ad is loaded or running. You DO have to stop trying....
@evilturtle999 ...to do things quickly. You DO have to lose all the motivation and enthusiasm you had for the Internet, pages like Gmail, Facebook, Google+, Google News, Google Docs, or any other website or application, really. You have to STOP trying to get things done fast, or your own will to live will be turned against you at the crawling, stumbling, useless pace of a piece-off-shit Chromebook. THAT is the SETUP you're in for with the Google Chromebook.
@evilturtle999 ...websites and you'll see what a fucking CRIPPLED PIECE OF JUNK your Chromebook is. Seriously.
It's just too bad that this computer, this Samsung Series 5, is probably the best computer available. Better than Windows, Mac OS, or Linux (with a conventional desktop).
But Google has really fucked up on this one at the same time. There's no good excuse for using an Intel Atom processor when it only serves to constantly irritate users during page loads.
@mikeyx11 Do you know where I can find the sales numbers? All it would really take is a faster processor to make these machines a hit. Seriously. I may not actually be right (I'm often overly optimistic) but I know that I could sell them if they were instant machines. The operating system is an improvement for most people. Everything else about this machine is great, and at the moment, I have no real complaints about the speed, either. Google probably made the best choice, but it's still slow.
@evilturtle999 I can't post links - just search "chromebook sales".
I can't find the most recent sales numbers though as Google doesn't report them, but from what I've read they are still selling quite slowly, even over Christmas.
If they put a faster processor in it, it would cost a lot more and sales would be even worse.
A super-fast car is nice but if it doesn't have the standard features of every other car then it's not going to sell so well. Putting a faster engine in it won't fix that.
@mikeyx11 I agree with your assessment on the processor. Sometimes I get all steaming angry then realize after that doing all that is reasonably possible _is_ perfect, and I think that's what Google has done.
Actually, before my last comment, typing "chromebook sales" into Google news is exactly what I did. No numbers, just a sentiment that the were selling slowly. I did find an article suggesting the opposite on talkincloud /retailers-sell-out-of-some-google-chromebooks-over-the-holiday/
@evilturtle999 They sold out, but that is quite possibly because there weren't many to begin with. By constraining supply, it creates scarcity and when that happens people think it must be good. It's all marketing. When something sells out, everyone wants it all of a sudden.
Paste this into Google search and go to the first result:
a20111109PD222.html
Although, as mentioned, those numbers are a bit old now. Hopefully can find some more recent figures soon.
@mikeyx11 It says the content is only available to paid subscribers only.
Despite my seemingly harsh criticisms of Google, perhaps I was wrong. After an exchange with a Google Ninja, I changed my router settings and that may be why my computer has been running consistently well since about that time. However, it seemed that everything was running much slower right after, and performance had fluctuated before, so....
Do you think Chromebooks should be like other computers? How?
@evilturtle999 That brings up a core issue - your entire experience with the Chromebook is dependent on your internet connection. Not only do they have extremely limited functionality, but the functionality they do have relies on something that is not always reliable.
As an example, if your internet isn't working, you can't even print something. How many people who buy these will know that when they make the purchase? I'm betting not many. It's very backwards.
@mikeyx11 So... what do you do with your computer WITHOUT an Internet connection? Word processing? Games? Screwing around with settings? Installing programs off optical media? File management? Before I decided I wanted a Chromebook, I took a good look at what I was already using and asked myself if there was anything I was going to miss. There wasn't. There were a few little things I enjoyed that I wouldn't get from a Chromebook: little games and a fortune cookie program. That was it.
@evilturtle999 And I don't think Google has really promoted these things because early adopters are exactly the type of people they want, right now. It's an early work and it will likely get MUCH better. Native Client holds the potential of running ALL programs in a browser. If that happened, a high-powered Chromebook is exactly what would be needed for gaming, video editing and design, and programming.
Imagine using a web browser as a phone. This is all heading somewhere.
You know, I was satisfied with my Chromebook for a couple of days, settling on the idea that the benefits of such a computer for its simplicity and no-nonsense operation outweighed the inconvenience of a cheap, slow, nearly useless Atom processor, but then a Google Chromebook Ninja "helped" me, wasting hours and hours more of my time because she refused to acknowledge it was the processor, instead blaming my connection.
@Randomguy578 I'm using one right now. It's my only computer. The Intel Atom processor within was the fastest one at the time of manufacture, but I still have to wait too long for pages to load, including Google Docs, Google+, Google News, the sites linking off Google News, Grooveshark, and Gmail. But you know what? Despite its slowness, this computer is the best one on the market, in my opinion. If they give these things good processors, I'll never want anything to do with other computers!
@mikeyx11 I have to agree: the pricetag is high. 450 bucks is a lot. Internet-availability is increasing and speed is increasing. The user experience of some webapps is stunning. I do think webbased apps are big thing in future, because of their platform independence and ability of storing data. Make one good webapp, you serve almost everything. It's exactly thát what makes the other platforms. And yes, a netbook with chrome can do the same. But why not strip it to those things you really need?
@mikeyx11 Number of users using Spotify and Google Music increase also. I just point out an alternative to Skype. I might be just a matter of time for users to shift. What smartphone user requires computers yet? Even apple-users don't have this anymore. Ofcourse, this is an early product, and it is not selling by itself. And, yes, new netbooks ARE that slow, and you have to maintain them. I speak from own experience, since I have this device for 6 months now. I miss exactly nothing.
@Willemhvh I barely print. I am using the Chromebook for 6 months and I could not think of it ever to use anything else again. For me, printing abilities do just have no weight at all in the pro/con figure. To be honest, I -always- print anythinig right into my Google docs.
You cán use internal harddisk. But if you still need a harddisk, you missed the point on a chromebook, and then you better buy anything else.
Making it rockstable and 'no worries' means a lot in the end, I see that now.
I fail to see the point of these. If you want something compact, get a netbook or any of the various apple products on the market such as an Ipad. Why on earth would you pay such an amount purely for the internet?
@chaimss Yeah but at this sort of speed it really is nit-picking. My personal problem with it is finding the right extensions that can be used offline
@oofheyt I think that's really the main problem with them- they're just too early for their time. I'd use mine mostly in the subway, i.e. no data service. This is what's kept me from getting one, and I wish I could.
Tacos don't need setup either, but are probably more useful than this.
Wanna download music to play in your car? Too bad. Need Java for certain websites? Too bad. Need to connect your phone? Too bad. Want to print to a normal printer? Too bad. Want to save the photos from your camera onto your computer? Too bad. Scan them? Hah. Skype? Better luck next time. ..........BOOM, you're done, and so is your wallet, time and sanity.
1. Yes, but you can't download music (or movies) or put it on a disc to play in the car or TV, or put the movies on a media player.
3. IF your phone supports USB storage, but even then: Install apps? No. Tethering? No. Save messages, contacts etc.? No. Update? No. The list goes on...
4. Ok, great. Too bad if my favorite pic sharing site only uses a Java uploader or I want a slideshow DVD.
@mikeyx11 What do you mean for an extra $50 you could have got a Chromebook? They're $300 like I had previously stated. Also, for $300 you are looking at Netbooks, which it's primary usage is for internet or programs that use like no memory. However, I'm not gonna try and put you down cause of my god-complex, but I will say stop bitching about the Chromebook because YOU don't have a use for it. Other people may, like myself. It's not a laptop, it's a Netbook for just the internet. Go cloud.
Where I live, a decent 14" Windows 7 laptop can be bought for that price, one that will do all of the things I've mentioned.
My work involves teaching people how to use computers, and I can honestly say that even the most basic users will regret buying one after they find out it won't do what they want.
@MrLockthorne The Chromebook ads are dodgy and misleading as well.
This video says it doesn't need setup, which is completely false.
Another video says fix your Dad's computer by replacing it with a Chromebook, despite there being a very good chance it won't do what he wants it to, which his old computer did.
There are so many limitations that the people buying these won't know about until it's too late.
They CAN fix these problems, but until they do, these are just going to be a headache.
@mikeyx11 YOU should get a netbook. Which, for this price, is dreadfully slow. And: Download music? Come on, we are almost in 2012. Connect phone? Come on, last time I did that was 3 years ago. Print? Think green, I print to Google docs. Save foto's? I put em online, 2 clicks. Much safer, and I can see them at more places. Skype? Hangouts are already a lot better. It may be not your time for it yet, but it just works awesome. I use it for 6 months now, professionally. Be creative. It's awesome.
@Rielity New netbooks and cheap laptops are not THAT slow. And some Chromebooks are like $450.00.
Download music? Most people do that, legally or not. iTunes? lolno. Connect your phone? I don't know anyone with a smartphone who doesn't - for the reasons I mentioned. Think green? Tell that to schools and universities that need your assignments printed, not to mention all the other cases. Skype? Other "hangouts" might be better, but if nobody uses them then they are irrelevant. Skype is still #1
@Rielity And more people do ALL of those things now than ever before and it's only increasing. Have a look at online music download numbers, active Skype users, smartphone users who require their computers etc.. You are talking like these things are history, when they really aren't. It's nearly 2012, not 2016.
Not sure what creativity has to do with being sucked into an over-priced walled garden, controlled entirely by a single company. Check the sales numbers, they speak for themselves. :)
@mikeyx11 I think the point is that it's just a fast netbook, people usually only use netbooks for internet surfing and typing documents, both of which this thing does fine. I don't know about the price tag, but it doesn't seem that bad. Do you expect to play BF3 on a 1000 dollar mac? Nope, you need a 2000 dollar mac for that.
@Travaillons "Do you expect to play BF3 on a 1000 dollar mac? Nope, you need a 2000 dollar mac for that." - Yes, but I don't think that's a fair comparison.
To be fair, it'd be: "You can play BF3 on a $1000 Mac, or you can buy a $2000 Chromebook that can't play BF3 but still send e-mails and boots up faster."
My main issue really is that these are targeted at the average consumer, many of whom won't know about the lock-in and downsides until it's too late. This can be fixed, but when...
@linkfox12458 Exactly... that's what I've been saying.
It's designed for people who will buy it and will not know how limited its functionality is until after they have purchased it. People like me who purchase it do so knowing full well what they are buying, but the large majority of people will not.
0:02 -> Psst, do it fast!
0:05 -> Damn turn on!!
0:06 -> Yess.
0:10 -> QUICK SHUT OFF THE CAMERA BEFORE IT GOES TO THE SETUP SCREEN!!
0:13 -> Fuck.. we're done, let's get some tacos.

On the presentation pages the book praised chrome but you can not even connect a printer. If you want to print you can do two things:

2 If you have an Internet printer, you can use the monochrome book printing.

You cán use internal harddisk. But if you still need a harddisk, you missed the point on a chromebook, and then you better buy anything else.
Making it rockstable and 'no worries' means a lot in the end, I see that now.
Rielity 2 months ago
I fail to see the point of these. If you want something compact, get a netbook or any of the various apple products on the market such as an Ipad. Why on earth would you pay such an amount purely for the internet?

oofheyt 2 months ago
@oofheyt True, but it still takes time.
chaimss 2 months ago
@chaimss Yeah but at this sort of speed it really is nit-picking. My personal problem with it is finding the right extensions that can be used offline
oofheyt 2 months ago
@oofheyt I think that's really the main problem with them- they're just too early for their time. I'd use mine mostly in the subway, i.e. no data service. This is what's kept me from getting one, and I wish I could.

Tacos don't need setup either, but are probably more useful than this.
Wanna download music to play in your car? Too bad. Need Java for certain websites? Too bad. Need to connect your phone? Too bad. Want to print to a normal printer? Too bad. Want to save the photos from your camera onto your computer? Too bad. Scan them? Hah. Skype? Better luck next time. ..........BOOM, you're done, and so is your wallet, time and sanity.
mikeyx11 2 months ago 8
@mikeyx11
1. You can play music (and movies)
2. Touché
3. You can connect your phone, if it supports USB storage
4. You can save and view photos
5. Touché
6. IMO, Trillian, eBuddy, and the list goes on...
You were saying?
zc456 2 months ago in playlist Chromebooks: How to...
@zc456
6. Can you use Trillian and eBuddy for Skype? NO.
For the same price, you can get a real laptop.
mikeyx11 2 months ago
@mikeyx11 For $300 you can get a really crappy laptop, but hey that's just my experience.
MrLockthorne 2 months ago
@MrLockthorne For only an extra $50 - $150, you could have got a Chromebook that does far, far less. (Or a better laptop)
Sadly, the type of people these are aimed at will buy them with absolutely no knowledge of all the shortcomings.
mikeyx11 2 months ago
@mikeyx11 What do you mean for an extra $50 you could have got a Chromebook? They're $300 like I had previously stated. Also, for $300 you are looking at Netbooks, which it's primary usage is for internet or programs that use like no memory. However, I'm not gonna try and put you down cause of my god-complex, but I will say stop bitching about the Chromebook because YOU don't have a use for it. Other people may, like myself. It's not a laptop, it's a Netbook for just the internet. Go cloud.
MrLockthorne 2 months ago
@MrLockthorne The cheapest Chromebook is $349.
Where I live, a decent 14" Windows 7 laptop can be bought for that price, one that will do all of the things I've mentioned.
My work involves teaching people how to use computers, and I can honestly say that even the most basic users will regret buying one after they find out it won't do what they want.
mikeyx11 2 months ago
@MrLockthorne The Chromebook ads are dodgy and misleading as well.
This video says it doesn't need setup, which is completely false.
Another video says fix your Dad's computer by replacing it with a Chromebook, despite there being a very good chance it won't do what he wants it to, which his old computer did.
There are so many limitations that the people buying these won't know about until it's too late.
They CAN fix these problems, but until they do, these are just going to be a headache.
mikeyx11 2 months ago
@mikeyx11 YOU should get a netbook. Which, for this price, is dreadfully slow. And: Download music? Come on, we are almost in 2012. Connect phone? Come on, last time I did that was 3 years ago. Print? Think green, I print to Google docs. Save foto's? I put em online, 2 clicks. Much safer, and I can see them at more places. Skype? Hangouts are already a lot better. It may be not your time for it yet, but it just works awesome. I use it for 6 months now, professionally. Be creative. It's awesome.
Rielity 2 months ago
@Rielity New netbooks and cheap laptops are not THAT slow. And some Chromebooks are like $450.00.
Download music? Most people do that, legally or not. iTunes? lolno. Connect your phone? I don't know anyone with a smartphone who doesn't - for the reasons I mentioned. Think green? Tell that to schools and universities that need your assignments printed, not to mention all the other cases. Skype? Other "hangouts" might be better, but if nobody uses them then they are irrelevant. Skype is still #1
mikeyx11 2 months ago
@Rielity And more people do ALL of those things now than ever before and it's only increasing. Have a look at online music download numbers, active Skype users, smartphone users who require their computers etc.. You are talking like these things are history, when they really aren't. It's nearly 2012, not 2016.
Not sure what creativity has to do with being sucked into an over-priced walled garden, controlled entirely by a single company. Check the sales numbers, they speak for themselves. :)
mikeyx11 2 months ago
@mikeyx11 I think the point is that it's just a fast netbook, people usually only use netbooks for internet surfing and typing documents, both of which this thing does fine. I don't know about the price tag, but it doesn't seem that bad. Do you expect to play BF3 on a 1000 dollar mac? Nope, you need a 2000 dollar mac for that.
Travaillons 1 month ago
@Travaillons "Do you expect to play BF3 on a 1000 dollar mac? Nope, you need a 2000 dollar mac for that." - Yes, but I don't think that's a fair comparison.
To be fair, it'd be: "You can play BF3 on a $1000 Mac, or you can buy a $2000 Chromebook that can't play BF3 but still send e-mails and boots up faster."
My main issue really is that these are targeted at the average consumer, many of whom won't know about the lock-in and downsides until it's too late. This can be fixed, but when...

@mikeyx11 I think this is designed for persons like your mom or dad or your little sister or brother
linkfox12458 1 month ago
@linkfox12458 Exactly... that's what I've been saying.
It's designed for people who will buy it and will not know how limited its functionality is until after they have purchased it. People like me who purchase it do so knowing full well what they are buying, but the large majority of people will not.
