  • This is a fantastic song, I remember it well from when I lived in the States. She is a great artist.

  • lost my friend when we were teens in the eighties. had alot of hard times afterwards in life. during a turning point in my life in the 90`s, heard this and thought wow what an inspirational piece! she`s fantastic!

  • perfect! what for a voice!

  • ecellent

  • Amanda Marshall has been my idol for a long time now.. she is beautiful, and classy, and has amazing talent

  • I am free!!! He is out of my life. It is hard but it is worth it. If I had stayed, I believe that he would have killed me by now. Leaving is VERY hard, but it IS possible. Thank you so much, Amanda Marshall!!!!

  • luv, luv, luv the song for the music

  • Tell that to Alec Baldwin. You can $50,000.00 to $500,000.00 on access if you've got it. Sole custody costs women nothing. What happened to women wanting equality? Joint custody is equality, and don't mess up your response with the 5% of abusive relationships. We all women who cut fathers out of kids lives for control reasons or he cheated on them or convenience with the new guy. Sole custody is evil and bad for kids. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

  • Sole custody costs women nothing? Did you wanna re-think that one?

  • So my ex-husband doesn't want anything to do with my children and he refuses to pay ANY child support. Do you think I shouldn't get sole custody?

  • Count your blessings if he was miserable to live with.

Imagine the damage he could inflict on your children.

Remember if he has no ties to you with money.

He has no control over you or the children.

  • "Before He Cheats" song by Carrie Underwood was number one Country Song of the year. Number one!!! It bragged of domestic violence against a man. Yes damaging personal property is DV. How far up the charts would it have gone if the roles were reversed. Who would even dare write such a song. Not a peep from women's groups over that one though. I guess women don't want equality, they want it their way.

p.s. Access denial is child abuse, spousal abuse and domestic violence.

  • Many artists have written songs about abuse directed towards women and children and lots of them have reached number 1. Independence Day???

  • seeing her tomorrow night woot woot

  • I hope that this video inspires an abused woman to realize that escape IS POSSIBLE. It isn't easy, but well worth the effort. I praise Amanda Marshall for doing a video like this...her heart is in the right place. She helped me to make up my mind to leave. I hope that she has a GREAT lIFE and other battered people will be inspired to leave also.

  • kenniewitch....that is probably the highest praise she could ever recieve about her song....good for you....

  • This is one of those songs I am embarassed to say I absolutely LOVE...

  • The best song ever!!

  • I first saw Amanda opening up for Jeff Healey, before she had a record contract. Had never heard of here, and my friends and I got blown away by this young petite woman with the enormous voice. I'm still waiting for the next album.

  • Reminds me of Fiona Apple..

  • Aw, I remember this song :)

  • i found this lady when i wos 21, 13 years ago. SHE HAS AN AMAZING VOICE, SHE DID PUT OUT ANOTHER ALBUM, BUT IT DIDNT INTEREST ME AS MUCH AS HER SELF TITLED ALBUM. POWERFUL.

  • Love Amanda, but for some reason I never cared for the album of this particular version. Her studio recorded acoustic version of this song is much better in my book. The song itself and the melody are excellent, as is all the songwriting on the debut album, but the keyboard arrangement is a little annoying after a while. The chorus is fantastic, it's just the keys in the verses, which is why I prefer the more stark and simple acoustic version.

  • Bout time I found this! I remember a performance on Austin City Limits which hooked me on this song. All I could remember was the song title and not the artist. Now I can consider myself informed!

  • i was lookin for this song i heard it on the radio but forgot about this song. Didnt know the title but FOUND IT

  • the world kind of forgot about amanda.

which is so sad because she SO talented.

  • NICE SONG

  • This was one helluva song! I hate she didn't get a shot the big time, 'cause this song was big in '96!

  • One of the best-written big songs of the last 15 years. A three-minute movie, as my songwriting teacher taught me.

  • I have always loved this song and finally found it in a little shop in London. This should be an anthem here in the States.

  • Amanda's Canadian.

  • for sure her best song in my opinion

  • I remember this album was the rage back in the mid 90's everybody thought she would be a big international music star

  • She so should've been. I think part of the problem was the time it took her to put out an album. And the fact she becomes invisible in between albums. Last I heard, she didn't even have a recording contract :(

  • Poor Amanda. :(

  • the flag is a part of american history why does it offend so many ppl i know some ppl think of slave when they see it but slaves were on both sides

  • Tubagee once again !!! Simply a beautiful song !!! I wonder if had to do with the change in music styles . They effected people like her and Sophie B. Hawkins . Some 90's artists could'nt make the transistion to the new century . peace Tubagee

  • Dear Amanda , you are truly beautiful!!! I remember Elton John saying that you are one favorite new singers back then . What happened ???/ Someone like you should be big as Sheryl Crow . If anyone agrees that she should have been bigger , contact Gary aka Tubagee

  • aw :( I miss the 90's

  • yeah, me too. Good times for sure.

  • This is my #1 favorite karaoke song. No one knows who Amanda Marshall is so the song has tons of impact. Why isn't she better known?

  • She is not very well known in the States, but she has always been really big in Canada... a lot of times our music doesn't have same impact in the states .

  • random confederate flag

  • The flag belongs to the guy she left.

Its supposed to speak to the character of the "bad guy" of the video.

  • She reminds me of rebecca Gayhart and Fiona Apple...

  • Reminds me of riding around on the interstate with my Mom in the April/March rainy season in 96.

  • uptempo ethereal masterpiece just like Sophie Hawkins> Damn I wish I was you lover

  • I loved this song when i was younger!

  • LOL i still love this song ..

Just thought i`d let you kno . x]

  • Ya. Ya. All men are monsters. One third of fathers never see their kids after divorce, now thats abusive- to both dads and kids.

  • The divorce laws allow visitation for fathers, at least the ones who are not abusing their wives and kids.

  • She should have known better.

  • She should have known better...than what, trust a guy? Not all abusers are obvious from the start. By the time you do realize, it can be extremely difficult to leave.

  • Virgil has a confederate flag.

  • Man i feel so old listening to this back in the day.

  • man i was 7 when this song came out

  • happy mike 44 Some people "target" others at a chance encounter. You may have smiled at her in a line at a food store. That is all it takes to get some people to obsess on you. It is a terrifying experience but these type of people are hard to get rid of. They obsess about you. Your best thing to do is don't leave a paper trail. Have your hydro and other bills etc sent through a lawyer. It may cost but what price are you gonna pay for your safety??? Get police help!!

  • hahaha omg love the person who post this remembered this song when i was 4-5 used to here it on 98.1 chfi(toronto) back in da day

    THANKS

  • You too?

I used to listen to that radio station all the time when I lived in Toronto.

  • Love this song !!! A beautiful woman with a great voice!!

  • About the seriousness of the song, and the way she sings it!! She is singing with lot of energy, because she has always had alot of energy when singing any song. Plus she is singing as if this already has happend and she's happy to be gone from this kind of situation!!!!

  • they so put the wrong title on the screen lol

  • What I could make out on the postcard was:

"Your car is in Seattle. Is it still raining? Get help. Goodbye."

  • Although you have been emotionally and physically beaten down, for some, escape is possible!!! Mary Smith is a very common name and get all written correspondence like bills sent to your lawyers office. It may cost a bit but you may be saving your life!!! Go for it girl!!!!!

  • This video was shot by Jeth Windrich (I think I spelt that correctly) who is a Canadian Video Director. He did a lot (if not all) of Jann Arden's videos as well - he has such great imagery for a video!

  • I didn't know why, in that clip, some other woman married a VERY jealous man, but she left him.

  • I love this song. I was a teenager when it came out.

  • I became the target of a female stalker many years ago.The police would do nothing to her out of fear it would enrage her.Me I did not know her or date her.She made my life miserable,I was helpless to stop this loon.So I had to move away and legally change my name so I could be free of this lunatic.I am free now with a new name, but still worry the loon will show up again. My best day was leaving my house selling it and not taking anything with me because if I had she would have known I was going.

  • You need to grow up, sonny!!! Get a life and leave inocent people alone.

  • I really dig this song, I remember the girl I was dating when this song came out...glad the song is still around. Thanks for posting this!

  • amazing imagery with the video and lyrics. her voice is gorgeous. The live version on youtube is pretty good too.

  • they whole visual is indicative of the out of control situation it portrays

    out of control and helpless

until a monumental decision is made

    to leave

  • Oh wow, I finally found this song again. I remember listening to this song around 96 on the local alternative station along with Primitive Radio Gods, but years later I could never remember any of the lyrics besides that she said "Birmingham" :)

One of my favorite songs from that period~

  • i admit the only thing that I liked most about the song is the piano and her voice....and "Birmingham"

  • wasted years

    no time for

    tears

  • very serious song

no one should ever be in this situation

out beyond of the lights of ......

  • yeah...and if you're even remotely familiar with domestic violence, this song really brings it home...

    thanks Amanda.

  • the back-up music on the whole cd makes this a classic - better than any her other cd's - one of my favorites - cannot stop listening and watching

  • amanda at her best - the cd is so, so great - i can listen to all the tracks over and over again - i love her mouth in this vid.

  • I LOVE YOU!

  • She's beautiful in this video :) :)

  • what the hell are u on? of course they match the song u idiot!!

  • I kind of agree with poetryluva.. I dunno. Still, a good vid. ^_^

  • the video is a bit of a vague irony

i do not know how you can not get

a little bit of chill up your spine

when when she sneaks out of the house

    with potential violence

    so close at hand

  • This certainly chilled my spine good and proper. This is such a scarey situation to be in...but the hope and the second chance are there. They hopefully, will let others in a similar situation, know that there is that second chance.

  • I agree with poetryluva too, dont call him/her an idiot ...that's incredibly rude. Amanda does infact seems so worked up over it like she should be screaming the lyrics ...but yet her singing voice is calmer than that. Great song though, I love this one and it does bring back great memories, but it just seems like she could have done this in a calmer way.

  • I actually went ot High-School with the girl in the video. I only knew it was her when I picked up a hitchhiker and he told me whather name was!! I felt dumb for not regognising her. sure is a pretty lady.

  • Suuuuree u did. Riiiight! OOOOOKy whatever u say

  • Gosh! this song reminds me of the 90's, remember when she had the Number 1 album with many hits throughout the country. :)

  • the backround chords

    echo in my head

i can almost feel the pain

    of these women

  • my life just flashes before my eyes when i see this video

  • The woman gets out! She is free to live her life, without violence. It is a pretty easy story to follow.

Amanda has such a powerful voice. She's even better live!

    Love and peace to all.

  • I could not find this song anywhere...

  • Self titled album, should still be available. It's worth the purchase, by far. All the Marshall albums are.

  • What's cooler is I drove thru Birmingham 2 this on a road trip~ very cool memories.

  • Loved Amanda since age 12....God- i miss her depth~

  • wow!! shes good

  • Great song great artist and killer voice. Glad she's Canadian :)!!

  • This woman has a Great voice, just discovered her music videos last night and have been playing them all mornong, she's a breath of fresh air.

  • Loved this song (and video) the first time I heard it on VH1, - you know, when they played videos ALL THE TIME? Thanks for posting it. Amanda Marshall has a great voice and is finally coming into her own. Go Girl!

  • this here is the shit.

    Saw her do this live.

    Amazing. Way better than studio....

  • This album, along with a Diana Krall, was the first CD I ever bought. (Everything was *gasp* ANALOGUE in my house). Still love it to this day. Thanks for posting the vid, which I had actually never seen before.

  • Takes me back to summer of 96....thanks for posting.

  • Amanda rocks!! this is one of my fave videos of hers! :)

  • Does anyone know if there is a video for "Sitting on top of the World" That is my favorite song of Amanda's.

    Many Thanks,

    Art

  • hey! i love this song! i was in 4th grade when it came out lol... havent seen the vid in years!! xoxo

  • wow..I remeber this song..listing to it when i was 13 lol

  • I have loved this song when it first came out 8 years ago! Thanks for the posting!

  • Great song indeed from a native Toronto, Canada girl! Bye the way, it was released in 1995, 12 years ago.

    Tim

    Toronto

  • You are right... I was thinking and it was 11 years ago that I remember hearing it for the first time... funny how they come back around isn't it.

  • It is a great song, but she really overdoes the lip synching here...either that, or her lips are weird. This subject matter isn't really something you "jam" to.

  • I think the audio is slightly out of sync with the video :(

  • Sadly it is... My original is fine though... not sure why this happened. When I have a chance I'll try uploading it again :)

  • i concur. nice song.

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS - GREAT SONG !! Well done you are a star !
