Stauffenberg wanted to kill Hitler, becouse he was disappointed to his unefective way to lead war. 1933 he hoped that Hitler will recover Germany´s power and take 1919 lost areas back. Tresckow planned to kill Hitler already in autumn 1941, because of the Nazi mass murders especially of the Jews. And Stauffenberg declared he was ready to kill Hitler in September 1942, well before the defeat of Stalingrad.

Well I have read about Staufenberg, but I think that Staufenberg´s motives were more patriotic than moral. He was very disappointed Hitler´s poor war leadership and way to mess Wehrmacht´s war strategies, which was one reason why Barbarossa failed. Stauffenberg hoped that Germany can ally with USA and Britannia against the Soviet Union when Hitler and his nearest men are killed.

I don't like the antisemitic tone of some comments here! The people who made the plot were complex characters. Some were early enemies of the Nazis, some (like Stauffenberg) changed sides after the invasion of Russia. The plot came very late - although more people died from July 1944 til May 1945 than in the five years of war from 1939 til July 1944 and a success thereby would have saved many lives. It was late, but they gave their lives and the lives of their loved ones. They deserve respect!!

Two books worth reading on this. "Valkerie" by Philip von Boeslager (the last surviving plotter) and "They Thought They were Free" by Milton Mayer, which is much more interesting. It was written by an American Jewish journalist who visited Nazi (prewar) Germany and then went to live in Germany after the war, to find out the mentality of the ordinary German who had joined the Nazi party. He got some good insights from them, and he didn't tell them he was Jewish of course.
There is no war yet and no Jews in camps. Chances are that you accept the regime based on its achievements up to that point even though you might not like it because of its limitations to personal freedom and aggression. However, the regime has just freed about 3 million Germans in the Sudetenland that were suppressed by Czech nationalists. Economic policy has been quite successful (Gordon Brown follows them today).

Sorry, Cruise fans. The casting of Tom in this role was a mistake. If he could have faked a passable german accent it would have been OK, but hearing that flat midwestern accent...when so many of the other german roles are played by brits with their somewhat more "foreign sounding" accents, just doesn't work.

Personally, I never liked those old movies where the Germans spoke English to each other but with a (bad) German accent. Go back and look at many of the war movies made in the 40s. There was a definite tendency to use Brit actors in the role of germans, and it works extremely well (from an american perspective). It isn't that they sound german at all...it's that they don't sound american and this lends some degree of authenticity to films that wouldn't be there if the german roles we played by actors with bronx accents, etc.
this was a great movie! i really wish that Stauffenberg was the one that had done hitler in. and the ottom line is tom cruise is an actor, so he acts. and he was great in this movie. has nothing to do with religion or whatever

This movie had sooo much potential to be amazing...instead they cast tom cruise who didn't even try doing a german accent, not to mention the half-hazard mesh of other british, amercian, and even irish actors and actresses-- NONE of whom attempted the accent either. Only a handfull of actors did and funny enough: they had the fewest lines. I would have taken subtitles over Cruise ANY day.

I saw Valkyrie yesterday and loved it! I was so happy that the story of these men was told because I did a project on them about five years ago and NO ONE BELIEVED ME! XD The only thing that upset me was that no one tried to put on a real German accent and the only real German in the cast (as far as I know) was one of my fave actors, Thomas Kretschmann. Sadly, he was only in the last hour of the movie and probably had a total of 45 min. on film as Otto Ernst Remer.
Letterman is not mocking the topic of Nazis or anything related to the Nazis. He is mocking the issue of who should be cast in the movie. People in Germany wanted a German as Claus van Stauffenberg instead of Cruise.

Stauffenberg wanted to kill Hitler, becouse he was disappointed to his unefective way to lead war. 1933 he hoped that Hitler will recover Germany´s power and take 1919 lost areas back. Tresckow planned to kill Hitler already in autumn 1941, because of the Nazi mass murders especially of the Jews. And Stauffenberg declared he was ready to kill Hitler in September 1942, well before the defeat of Stalingrad.
Arrogant prejudice towards other nations was common among conservatives or aristocrats in that time, e.g. also by Churchill or Roosevelt. Stauffenberg was no democrat in our sense, but not many of his critics today would have had his courage and determination in 1944.

There was a resistance network within the Wehrmacht that since 1938 aimed to remove Hitler from power. Tresckow sympathised with them from the beginning, whereas Stauffenberg needed a bit longer to fully realize the criminal nature of the Nazi state.
In a brutal regime, progaganda and group pressure ("Do not foul your own nest") often hinder resistance. But since 1943 Stauffenberg's motives were mainly moral (read "Tresckow", "Stauffenberg" in Wikipedia or (many) other sources)

Well I have read about Staufenberg, but I think that Staufenberg´s motives were more patriotic than moral. He was very disappointed Hitler´s poor war leadership and way to mess Wehrmacht´s war strategies, which was one reason why Barbarossa failed. Then brutal sides of Hitler´s government disgusted practically everybody who had sense of honour and humanity. Stauffenberg hoped that Germany can ally with USA and Britannia against the Soviet Union when Hitler and his nearest men are killed.

OK, patriotic and moral motives were mixed, if they could be divided anyway in this respect. To surrender to the Allies was of course easier than to the Soviets - fearing the revenge of the Red Army and the occupation by Stalin's also very brutal regime.
The difference between "patriot" and "nationalist" is that the patriot loves his country without needing to hate or antagonize other neighboring countries. Nationalists need an enemy whom they can hate or despise.

Hitler knew that Germany could never win a defensive war against such a large foe as communist russia so he had to go on the offense. Hitler didn't first declare war on the soviets because he knew that Stalin would then stack the front lines with christians and other undesirables to be conveniently slaughtered. All of Hitler's decisions were designed to preserve as many lives as possible while Stalin and the Americans always aimed to kill as many people as possible to show ruthlessness.

The so-called "war crimes " committed against the Japanese in August 1945 saved untold millions of Japanese civilian lives. Truman asked "Will it be like Okinawa?" and his service chiefs said yes. Okinawa was not even the Japanese homeland proper and the fighting was worse than ever. What would they have done to protect the Emperor and their families. Of course the Holocaust and other heinous atrocities would have been stopped if Stauffenberg had been successful. That's evident - just read Wikipedia and many other sources. Tresckow had been in the resistance since 1938, and Stauffenberg joined no later than 1942.

In power Stauffenberg would surely have issued orders to stop genocide and the most heinous crimes. People obey hierarchies, and it were mostly "normal" people who carried out criminal orders for career reasons and out of group pressure - real fanatics are always a small minority.
"War crimes" is of course relative: The mass rapings by the Red Army and the Allied area bombardment were also far beyond the Geneva convention, but must be seen in the context of revenge.

The Nazis had enormously brutalized warfare compared to WW I - also apart from the Holocaust - with countless atrocities especially in occupied Eastern Europe. This stirred hate, and brutalized their enemies as well - with literally millions of women raped by the Red Army and senseless civilian bombardment in the final months of WW II. That were of course war crimes, but which winners want to prosecute themselves? Their populations wouldn't have understood that.

Things must be called for it's name. A war crime is a war crime. Crimes are dfined by Law. The treaties from Den Hage and Geneva define the war crimes as earli as the 1800's. There is international law and laws of engagement. Bombing of civilians is considered a war crime, period.

You know? Saddam Hussein was hang for killing the people that tried to kill him using chemical weapons. The US bombbed civilians (farmers, women, children) in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Empire of Japan launced a war in Asia when it invaded Manchuria and China in the early 1930's. By 1945 Japan had killed over 22 million Chinese and millions of other Asians. The USA and the British Empire and Dutch Colonies on Asia were attacked by japan on December 7, 1941, that launched WW II in Asia. And if the Japanese Army killed Chinese civilians that does not justify the killing of Japanese civilians. That just means that there are war criminals at both sides. The means of a brutal dictatorship to curb oppostion is often underestimated: informers everywhere, a climate of intimidation, only propaganda press, group pressure ("You foul your own nest"). I know from biographies and own relatives there were lots of Germans who disliked the Nazis, but also many careerists who - often indifferently - carried out any order. Not so many real fanatics - without Hitler on top most probably neither the Russian war nor the Holocaust would have taken place.

I don't like the antisemitic tone of some comments here! The people who made the plot were complex characters. Some were early enemies of the Nazis, some (like Stauffenberg) changed sides after the invasion of Russia. The plot came very late - although more people died from July 1944 til May 1945 than in the five years of war from 1939 til July 1944 and a success thereby would have saved many lives. It was late, but they gave their lives and the lives of their loved ones. They deserve respect!!

I mean, sure it's a heavy topic, but it's been over fifty years so why not take it with humour sometimes?Letterman's show is supposed to be funny, so he makes fun. It's not his job to give history lessons..it's to make fun of stuff. And anyway, if somebody actully thinks, that all germans were like hitler during those day, that they are absolute idiots and there's no sense talking to them or explain something..

Two books worth reading on this. "Valkerie" by Philip von Boeslager (the last surviving plotter) and "They Thought They were Free" by Milton Mayer, which is much more interesting. It was written by an American Jewish journalist who visited Nazi (prewar) Germany and then went to live in Germany after the war, to find out the mentality of the ordinary German who had joined the Nazi party. He got some good insights from them, and he didn't tell them he was Jewish of course.

There is no war yet and no Jews in camps. Chances are that you accept the regime based on its achievements up to that point even though you might not like it because of its limitations to personal freedom and aggression. However, the regime has just freed about 3 million Germans in the Sudetenland that were suppressed by Czech nationalists. Economic policy has been quite successful (Gordon Brown follows them today).

They wanted to stage an assassination of the head of the Nazi party and then a military coup, in order to remove the Nazi party and replace it with a new government you idiot. he was a conservative patriot who surved his country. He wasn´t a real nazi. But at the beginning he was an oppurtinist, as long as nazism was sucsessfully he hadn´t a problem with hitler. But in the end when he realized the crimes that were comitted by these regime and in face of the menacing defeat, he decided that they have "remove" Hitler. But in fact, in 1938 before the annexation of the "Sudetenland" the surpreme command of the wehrmacht forged a plan to kill hitler if he order war.

Sorry, Cruise fans. The casting of Tom in this role was a mistake. If he could have faked a passable german accent it would have been OK, but hearing that flat midwestern accent...when so many of the other german roles are played by brits with their somewhat more "foreign sounding" accents, just doesn't work.
Cruise is a fine actor. Couldn't he have done an accent??!!

'foreign sounding'? Depends where you are when you watch it. millions of British people might disagree. Personally, I never liked those old movies where the Germans spoke English to each other but with a (bad) German accent. It's more important that people study, why a society allows tyrants to rise, than worry about accents. check out 'They Thought They were Free' by Milton Mayer. It's a book about ordinary Germans and why they jumped on the Nazi party bandwagon.

Go back and look at many of the war movies made in the 40s. There was a definite tendency to use Brit actors in the role of germans, and it works extremely well (from an american perspective). It isn't that they sound german at all...it's that they don't sound american and this lends some degree of authenticity to films that wouldn't be there if the german roles we played by actors with bronx accents, etc.

This movie had sooo much potential to be amazing...instead they cast tom cruise who didn't even try doing a german accent, not to mention the half-hazard mesh of other british, amercian, and even irish actors and actresses-- NONE of whom attempted the accent either. Only a handfull of actors did and funny enough: they had the fewest lines. I would have taken subtitles over Cruise ANY day.

I saw Valkyrie yesterday and loved it! I was so happy that the story of these men was told because I did a project on them about five years ago and NO ONE BELIEVED ME! XD The only thing that upset me was that no one tried to put on a real German accent and the only real German in the cast (as far as I know) was one of my fave actors, Thomas Kretschmann. Sadly, he was only in the last hour of the movie and probably had a total of 45 min. on film as Otto Ernst Remer.

Letterman is not mocking the topic of Nazis or anything related to the Nazis. He is mocking the issue of who should be cast in the movie. People in Germany wanted a German as Claus van Stauffenberg instead of Cruise.
