Fairly cheap meters can display frequency up to 20mhz, thanks for the idea! I have one sitting on my bench; duh :)

Thanks; it's still touchy to work with, but it does show that exact tuning can be achieved on a considerably small budget.

Next stage is to use the 10mhz xtal colpitts oscillator, and try tickle up a self runner..
