I was born 3 days before Judy died and have been a huge fan ever since I first saw The Wizard of Oz, back in the early 70's. As a stereotypical male fan, I am gay and have also battled alcoholism (winning for now). This tape shows how addiction ravaged her appearance. There was no Betty Ford Center, back in 1969, nor was it acceptable for a female celebrity to admit a problem with drugs or alcohol. She was born too soon and left us too soon. Can't wait to meet her when I go over the rainbow.
Do you have any of her music/feather1 Her music is still in print and selling as if she were going to be at Carnegie again.I am sure her debts are paid off by now!!! When you trust other people to your life's work you don't expect it to be gambled away quicker than you can make it!!!The books forget to put that in about Sid Lufts gambling problems. At 35,000.a week she could not catch up.Her money was being spent by someone else. Not by Judy she was making the money......
Why did en't Mickey put her in the hospital? She trusted him and I am sure as a so called man he could have set her down and told her he loved her and to get well.No he had her singing just like the rest!!!!!!!!!!
@weightfeather1 Yes the good people became involved with themselves and the bad people surrounded her --- and a drug addiction was deadly in the 1960's when drugs were the order of the day.
HER TEETH,SPEED,AND DRUGS DEAR,i heard, and someone correct me if i am wrong,PLEASE,her damn mother, and the executives of the big studios dosed her,so she made more money, and she is a gemini,we're not known for mental stability, actors, artists, lookers, yeah, but stable,MARILYN,???and ravaged by hepatitus, working day and night,it almost claimed liza, and others,AND NAME ANYONE NOW WITH SUCH TALENT,NOBODY
I had no idea that Johnny Ray was also a great pianist! He was also going through some addictions of his own at the time--but unlike Judy survived them. In spite of Judy's 'out of it " apperence, I love her tenderness and empathy as she sings with Ray.
So you're saying that she was genetically flawed and that's why she died? What about all the people that probably fit with your criteria but had loving friends and family who helped them? I don't buy it.
all of you who are "appalled" by the friends and family who could let it come to this might try living with a drug/alcohol addct for a few days/weeks/years and then give a more informed assesment of the "beautifull, beautifull "person they lived with...it's a little harder than listening to song or reading a sob-story biography..Judy was a great great talent , the rest is the tragedy of a person geneticaly predestined for addiction and mental unstability, hard to help, harder to save.
Very Sad, very tragic. Reading some of the comments here one would think that a person just choses to become drug dependant in the course of growing up! This talented woman never have the foundation in life that prepared her for what was to come; the people who depended on and used her and she used them too. It's too easy to assume that someone could have stopped her way of living life. She didn't know any other way and too often she was forced to perform for the money. RIP brave one!
Lady Garlands life was most certainly NOT a waste. Yes, she had her demons. The truly creative and sensitive often battle them their whole lives. If you are not a creative, then you do not understand. Life reached down into her tiny body and pulled everything out. We are born, we grow, bloom, fade and die. Judy was the sun in the sky, burning as hot as she could for all the flowers below. Burning still.
Some food for thought, for those of you who judge. Regarding Judy's drug addiction...
Imagine what "uppers and downers" on a daily basis since childhood does to the human body. Is it possible that it may affect organs, hormones, neurochemicals, etc. on a very basic cellular level? Is it possible that her involuntarily forced "addiction" by her mother, then by the studio system changed her body/body's chemistry such that she never honestly had a "mental" choice?
@weightfeather1 She was more emotionally frail but just as physically weak, Sadly forgotten along the way as the studio system abandoned her as well as her public.
@weightfeather1 Yes, a complete waste of life and talent. When anphetamies came out, people thought they were a miracle drug. Everyone took them and nobody thought of secondary effects or addiction, of course they needed to Barbiturates to sleep. That became a vicious circle. Mickey Rooney seemed the only who was able to overcome this. It is very difficult to get off those vicious drugs.
Ms. Garland was treated by the likes of MGM in a disgusting manner. I don't think her previous husbands were helpful either. She deserves respect. She was treated in an undignified manner. If you want to discuss then do it in a manner she deserved. She had talent. To all those idiots that post such rubbish then I suggest you bugger off. Your comments are worthless. Nobody are interested.
Watching Judy made me feel SO sad and sick to my stomach! I've loved and admired Judy since I was a child...It's so scary to watch how your so called 'friends' can allow this to happen to her...I don't know, was Judy such a strong person that nobody could help her?
@judyross28 eh, i dont really believe in hell anyway, but wherever she is, shes high (lol get it?) you cant get mad at that one because it is either a complement(heaven) or insult(somewhere in a 711 bathroom drooling). i cought you in my paradox :)
she looked like death. Whatever happened to her she looked like a Drug ice head... what a shame a fucking shame she destoryed her own self. what a talent lost.
This documentary filmed 3 months before she died, shows everyone that Judy was gravely ill. Those who were part of her inner circle at the end were morally bankrupt ppl who used a this sick woman. These Vultures showed no compassion to Judy, a woman who just wanted to feel loved. They knew she was sick but Deans didnt care & it showed, that he really cared about her. If he did he would have gotten her medical help being her husband & all. Liza who was earning over 400K a yr & turned Judy away.
when she sings the word "melody" at 7:11 my heart skips a beat <3 "with a dixie me-LO-dy" it's that LO that's just absolutely amazing and wonderful and beautiful <3 All of Judy's songs takes my breath away, but that particular note is now my favorite :') please, what song is she singing there? I'm dying to know :) <3<3
@No1KCfan6 Judy was only 46 here but looked 20yrs older + poor film & lighting didn't help either. Judy was 4'11" tiny frame and had to be about 85 lbs here. She looks exhausted, pale& when you get this thin & not eating good food the skin becomes thin. Her eyes look huge and her gums must have receaded causing dental problems. Judy smoked & supposedly was dying of cirrosis of the liver. I doubt she had medical coverage.Judy also had crookd teeth but MGM put temporary caps on her teeth .
@No1KCfan6 You're Welcome. In 1982 when I was 14yrs old in Jr High, I read my first Biography. I found Gerald Frank's Bio titled "JUDY" it was published in '75 . It's by far the best Biography of Judy Garland. John Fricke's books are also accurate truthful & I highly reccomend anything he writes too.Frank's bio had the full support of Judy's entire family, friends etc. But the other author Gerald Clarke's "GET HAPPY" read like a cheap tabloid. Im lucky we have the internet to see clips of judy.
This was done in March 1969 it wasn't done in 1970. Maybe released in 1970. I wish they would remaster it and then place it on DVD. The quality isnt that great and the lighting wasn't very good. It was " A day in the life of Judy Garland" It seems to me this is the very first "reality show". I think they should have had a better crew filming it. Johnnie Ray sounded awful.
anything but fancy free just a junior high diversion... kidding all aside i'm old enough to fly alone... this is the one & only Judy Garland.. so glad Judy has not been forgotten.
@bowmister this version of "By Myself" was on her 1957 Capitol album called "Alone". It is one of my favorite albums of hers. Her voice was pefect. I have to check to see if its on CD yet.
it little sad,but very important to have anything with her in it. i remember that E.T. reported (which i recored) that this film was aucctiond 2 a collector 4 several thousand dollars...do u know anyone that released all of this on tape or dvd?? Must get it.thanx.where did u get it?
@JuanMacready . . . @Juanmacready . . . I know and it remains a shame because she was one of the most gifted and talented performers of the 20th Century and she faded much too young. A wonderful talent legacy, however, that will endure (we're still "talking" about her!) . . .
