Not a great idea to leave your almost-finished gas cannisters in bothies, they are litter and not something useful for others. The same goes for empty whisky bottles, adding a candle doesn't turn it from "litter "into into "something useful" when there are 10 in there already.
It also needs to remember that you should take all litter home with you, and burn anything combustible. I'm in the habit of taking other people's bottles, cans etc home with me: why walk out with an empty sac if it was full when walking in?
Also, @nizxbit: why should the English keep out? I know plenty of English people who volunteer to help maintain the bothies.
@boosimulacrum hi i live in invergordon, can you tell me if there is any of these bothies near me?or any nice lochs i could take my 9 year old son too?
Some excellent advice from the video and comments. But, people should be aware that even if they are first into the bothy, they have no higher claim of right to use of the facility. As the video said, first come, first slept...but others can fit themselves in somewhere, especially if darkness is well upon them.
If you look closely at OS maps you'll see that a bothy with no roof (a ruin)is an empty box, but one with a roof is coloured in. The main problem is the lack of wood nearby for fires to keep warm, and that hard floor, and it's total darkness at night SPOOKY so dont go alone! I'm too fat and old for all that discomfort nowadays. Its great for getting away from it all though, but after a couple of nights the best thing about bothying is going home, makes you appreciate just how good home is!
Nice video. One thing to point out is that leaving perishable foods only encourages mice into the bothy. Stick to leaving canned food only as it's mouse-proof and anyone desperate for food can eat it without needing a stove.
